We thought of ways to help our ghostly acquaintance but nothing came to mind ,she mustn't stay on in the realm of the living, she doesn't belong here, I thought to myself, but me and Elizabeth couldn't help her, we didn't know how.
“Okay well, we need a plan” I said, pacing back and forth in the corridor, trying to think of something.
“Lola, There must be some way to help you pass on, we just need to know how.”
“Cass I think-”
“Not now Beth!” I unintentionally shouted at her, I was both nervous and irritated, I suppose.
But then I realized she was crying, Lola was trying to comfort her but to no avail.
“Wait, no Beth, I didn't mean to shout at you, I just-” I stopped myself, there were no excuses for my actions, none of the manners I learned seemed to show during that moment.
“Beth, I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have shouted at you, What were you trying to tell me?”
“Well” she started to say as She wiped her teary eyes, “I think that maybe that the reason you’re here Lola is that you have unfinished business, or haven’t fulfilled a request right? Since You were waiting for your Mother to come for you, and she never did, we just need to find a way for your mothers spirit, to maybe come back and take you with her to the afterlife”
I stared at my sister in amazement. How could a girl that young have such good ideas?
Sure things could go wrong, but don't risks mean the plan has more potential if things go right?
“Yes” Lola replied, “yes, we need to find a way for Mama to come back for me, there musn't be a way she's alive anymore though, I know that much, so we just need to find a way to get her to come take me with her”
“Okay” I said, talking to Lola, “Do you have any Items of your mothers, perhaps a hat or a bracelet or something?” I questioned Lola.
“Oh! Yes! I do. I have her scarf, it's just over by that door” she told me, as she pointed to the door “I would get it myself, but I can't move things since I became a. . .” She said, not wanting to say the word ghost, I suppose.
In a manor like her life depended on it, Elizabeth darted to the door in which the scarf was hanging on a hook beside it, which was at the end of the long hallway, Elizabeth grabbed the scarf and ran back holding it up to us as if it were trophy,
“Okay” She said, in between heavy breaths, “okay, I got the scarf, now what do we do?”
“Okay I think that maybe, if we take the scarf, and all of us focus every ounce of our being on it, just willing her to, maybe your mother could come to the living realm one last time?” I questioned.
So, we all went into a room and sat on the rotting floor, there was no furniture, the rose printed wall paper was peeling off, and the bureau was decaying and smelled of earth and grime but that was least of our concerns,
“Okay, we just need to all try, if not we'll find another way” Lola muttered, sounding nervous.
Beth didn't waste time and sat on the floor at one part of the decaying circular rug and set out the scarf in front of her, I went to join her but I realized Lola was frozen in place at the doorway, I walked back to her, and clasped her hand in mine,
“Come on, we mustn't waste time, I get it you're scared, but so are me and Beth, we have to do this now, this hotel will collapse in on us if we don't hurry” I laughed weakly, giving a forced smile.
“Okay” she mumbled “Okay, yeah, I can do this, . . no, we Can do this, right?” She said back, squeezing my hand and smiling back at me, eyes lit with determination.
We sat in a circle hand in hand, her mothers scarf in the middle. We closed our eyes and focused all our energy on willing her mother to appear.
We tried for a long time but to no avail, Lola’s eyes brimmed with tears,
“No, no, this has to work! I can't stay here anymore!” She wailed
“Lola, come on we just need to try again, It will work I swear!” I told her
“There's no use, it will never work. I'm doomed.” She responded
“Lola there's nothing to lose!” Elizabeth Yelled, “We can't just let you suffer on forever!”
“Okay, okay, one last time.” lola said, trying to sound more hopeful than I expected she was.
We sat in the circle once more and put the scarf in the middle. It had to work, Lola’s life-, well death, depended on it.
Cassandra Carlton is an orphan, but her orphanage has a secret, a dark, dark secret. Her and her sister Elizabeth were waiting to be adopted like any other children would be, but Elizabeth found a key. That simple key opened a lock to a door that hid information so obscure, so unforeseen, that none of them would ever have predicted it.
