We lived with Miss Carlton for about six months and then she mysteriously died in the night when Elizabeth and I were asleep. There were scratches in her neck that the sheriff didn't notice, but I did. Something happened to her that night. I feel no sorrow for her, but I inquire what really happened. Neither me or Elizabeth know how she really died, even years after, all we know is that Miss Carlton was found dead at eleven at night, september seventeenth and that the sheriffs suspect heart failure, but how at her age, I wonder. We acted sad at her funeral but we felt no remorse, as she was as rude as Missus Harris. But me and Elizabeth didn't go back to the orphanage, they just left us, all alone. We were ten and five years old, and they really abandoned us. We lived in Miss Carlton’s abandoned house for goodness sake! Most likely haunted by her unforgiving ghost, knowing we didn't miss her. I always hated Missus Harris’s, but this was just wrong and cruel. Me and Elizabeth were living in Miss Carlton’s abandoned house for a while but then we heard news about something, something horrid.
Since the government announced there was a creature called ‘The Watcher’, I knew me and Elizabeth were in danger. The watcher was known to snatch children out of the woods at night. And to appear whenever it felt necessary. We were taken to a government safe house, but everything seemed a bit off. They told us children we couldn't go outside or open windows, and no doors to the outside because of ‘The Watcher’, but me and Elizabeth broke that rule.
“Are you sure about this Cassie?” Elizabeth asked me, she knew I hated being called that but for this time I let it slide. we were both terrified,
“Yep I’m sure Lizzy'' I said as she clung to my arm.
I slowly opened the window and The Watcher appeared and came in. Listen I’m all about believing in creatures but come on this Supposed ‘watcher’ was actually a girl about my age, probably ten, with a mysterious disease from the medication testing. it made her turn the color black if she feels threatened. There were other kids with her condition but the testers ‘brought them to a better place’. We let her in but then something unexpected happened.
Cassandra Carlton is an orphan, but her orphanage has a secret, a dark, dark secret. Her and her sister Elizabeth were waiting to be adopted like any other children would be, but Elizabeth found a key. That simple key opened a lock to a door that hid information so obscure, so unforeseen, that none of them would ever have predicted it.
