Though the tests stopped after a few months, maybe somebody found out about them, I’m not sure. But after they stopped a fire just like the one that happened in eighteen fifty broke out. We were in the courtyard when it happened. At first, it was just smoke coming from a window, then it poured out from several, and then the building engulfed in flames and smoke. Children and maids ran out of the orphanage, terrified, some burnt, limping, or even bleeding. All I could do was stand and watch, stunned, until another girl with a long black braid grabbed my arm and dragged me along with everyone else. The orphanage was damaged out of repeare, so they made us live in a run down, rotting hotel until they realized we couldn't live in these conditions anymore, I don't really remember it to well, but I found a little girl walking along the street by the orphanage, her name was Elizabeth, she told me, she told me she had to leave her house when an earthquake happened. She had shoulder length brown hair with fringe and it was sun streaked, her tiny round face was covered in freckles and she was pale, but not as much as me. She was wearing a dress that looked formal for such a young child, I could only imagine what her family she left was like. She had brown eyes and a small gap between her front teeth, normal for a girl her age, I thought. Elizabeth was four at the time when I was nine like I mentioned, once the staff realized they couldn’t fix this orphanage we conjoined to another one nearby. Once we were there we tried our best to act normal but soon me and Elizabeth left.
Cassandra Carlton is an orphan, but her orphanage has a secret, a dark, dark secret. Her and her sister Elizabeth were waiting to be adopted like any other children would be, but Elizabeth found a key. That simple key opened a lock to a door that hid information so obscure, so unforeseen, that none of them would ever have predicted it.
