Two men stood in front of the Potter household. It was holy eve and although they were wearing thick cloaks one of them shivered as he neglected to wear anything to warm his neck, opting to wear his usual spiky collar instead.
“Aren’t you gonna knock, Remus?” A man with scruffy hair and beard asked. “Knock? Why do that when they have a doorbell?” A man with dark brown hair questioned in return.
“So…ring the bell then.”
“...You do it, Sirius.”
Sirius rolled his eyes. They’ve walked deliberately slow through the snow and have been staring at the front door for a solid minute. Sirius’ throat felt awful and it only got worse as a cold gust flew by. “Fine, jeez.” He held his finger to a square button right next to the entrance.
Footsteps were heard from behind and soon a redheaded woman opened. She held a tray of cupcakes which were frosted to look like pine trees. “Sirius?...Remus?...” She slowly spoke their names. “Why’re you-” Another cold gust blew by, causing the woman to shiver hard enough that one of the cupcakes fell down. “Yeesh! Best come inside, you two.”
The home had been decorated to look more jolly than usual, certainly more items than when they decorated for Halloween. The walls had removable snowman stickers and a small, enchanted Santa doll that stood towards the end of the stair railing slowly waved at the two guests. In the living room stood James who was just about to put a star shaped ornament at the top of a small tree. When the man with oval glasses noticed two men coming in he nearly fell from the chair he used to reach the top. “Moony? Padfoot?!” James spoke with a happier tone than Lily’s, who was much more surprised.
He climbed down and grabbed the two men in a tight hug. “What the hell, guys! You should’ve told me you were coming!”
Remus shrugged. “Our visit wasn’t exactly planned, Sirius just randomly woke me up in the middle of the night and spontaneously decided that we should come.”
James raised a brow, a tad confused at the fact that Sirius apparently had access to Remus’ home. He was just too excited to focus on that for long, it had been nearly a year since he’s last seen the two men.
The three sat down and began with some small talk, the small talk was quickly pushed aside as Sirius found the conversation “utterly boring” and that he would “rather jump off the roof than continue talking about this”. Remus sarcastically asked him to stand true to his words and before they could stop him Sirius had already run upstairs and climbed up the roof from one of the windows.
Remus shouted at him to get down from there, safely. James meanwhile just stood by with a can of beer and a smug smile.
Sirius jumped down and fell face first into the snow which somewhat cushioned his fall but he ultimately got up again with a bloodied nose. He asked whether or not he should jump again but Remus quickly told him off and dragged him back into the house by the ear.
“Ugh…Should’ve known it was you, Black.” Severus spoke as he headed down the stairs. “Not even here for an hour and already drunk.”
Remus and Sirius both went wide-eyed as they saw the greasy haired man. The same question was floating through their heads “What the hell was he doing here?” Sirius had accidentally said the thought out loud however without noticing.
“Obviously I was invited to celebrate the holiday, what’s your excuse?” Severus said with vitriol in his voice. Behind the man something small was hiding, just slightly above his knees hid Harry who used Severus’ cloak as a sort of shield.
Sirius bent down to peek closer at the boy. “Harry, ‘S that you? You’ve grown so large I almost didn’t recognize you!” blood had continued dripping from his nose which scared the boy greatly. Remus pulled the scruffy haired man back and performed a quick heal spell.
Harry at first hid away but Severus reassured him by petting his head. “Don’t worry, this one may be a brute but he’s…relatively harmless.” The boy slowly came out of hiding and approached the two men. “Hello…” The boy spoke slowly, reaching his hand out. Remus returned the greeting and shook Harry’s small palm. Sirius seemed amazed at hearing the boy talk and looked towards James who gave a vague smile. There were now two questions in Sirius’ and Remus’ heads.
One, why is Snape here? And two, since when could Harry talk again?
Four men and a toddler sat down at the kitchen table, soon a woman joined in with several warm foods in tow. Sirius grabbed himself a ton of chicken and was about to chow down before Remus bumped him by the elbow. He looked over at the brown haired man with confusion, but soon remembered the elephant in the room as Remus subtly pointed to it with his eyes. Sirius slightly lowered the fork. “Seriously though, why is Snivellus here?”
The long haired man huffed, biting down on a cherry tomato. Lily was about to say something when James suddenly opened his mouth. “We thought it would be nice for Harry.” That rang true, but Lily added, “Also, it’s more fun to celebrate the holiday with more people. Being surrounded by friends and family is what this day is all about after all!” Friends and family…since when did the Potters consider Snape a friend? “We wanted to invite you too but…we were worried you two were still fighting.”
Remus rubbed the back of his head with embarrassment. “It’s not
that we were fighting really, Sirius and I just didn’t talk for a
while…”
“No worries though, we talk plenty these days.” Sirius wrapped his arm around Remus’ shoulder and held him close. He finally brought the fork back up and shoved the chicken into his mouth. “Lots of talking and…other stuff.” Remus’ went slightly red in the face and pulled himself away.
The Potter couple stared at each other for a while. “Wait…are you two…” Lily slowly said. “Ooh! You are! I’m so happy for you two.” She clasped her hands together and held them to the side of her head. “How long have you been together? When did you realize?”
Sirius shrugged. “A couple months, like…we just tried it out for a bit just to see if we were actually into this and…yeah, safe to say we are into it.” He reached out to take Remus into his arms again only to miss, instead the brown haired man was the one to hold close instead.
“We constantly thought it was a mistake, that we were ruining our friendship…but I think that was just me being anxious for nothing.” Remus said. “Practically not much has changed, aside from receiving morning kisses and such…” Sirius was the one to turn pink this time.
James rubbed his chin for a bit. “Y’know, I’m like not surprised…but at the same time am? I mean I always thought there was something going on but you two seemed too stubborn to admit it. I always imagined one of you would be dying in the others’ arms and proclaim their feelings at the last moment.” James spoke with a theatrical voice. Sirius gave him a slight punch to the shoulder with a laugh.
Remus had noticed that Severus was staring at them with absolute silence. “...What?” The brown haired man eventually began, “Is there some sort of problem, Snape?”
“It’s just…I was under the impression you two were already together.” He said just before cutting himself a piece of chicken.
Remus raised a brow. “Already together? Since when did you start believing that?”
“Around the sixth year or so, at Hogwarts I mean. Or maybe it was the seventh…”
Sirius tilted his head in bewilderment. “But we never…” He searched through his mind trying to find what Severus would have meant. It’s true that the two men noticed feelings towards their late schooling years but they both did a pretty good job at pushing those feelings away in fear that the other would reject them. “This whole time you thought we were a thing without saying it? How the heck did you notice anything between us anyhow?”
Severus looked at the scruffy man as if he just claimed that alien life form exists. “Are you serious?”
“...Yes?”
“Anytime there was some sort of big holiday you would sneak alcohol from hogsmeade, drink like there was no tomorrow with the rest of your group and then drag Remus to make out with him in the library.” Severus went on to explain. “Do you not remember any of that? I almost failed a magic history exam because the sound of your smooching kept distracting me from my studies.” Remus and Severus both blinked like fish, they absolutely did not remember that at all…although, they do remember having strange dreams at times that just so happened to follow that exact scenario Severus had described.
“Potato…” Harry spoke, holding his plate close to Lily.
“Huh? Oh! Right.” Lily reached for the bowl of mashed potato and filled half the plate with it. Her son didn’t seem all too keen on the veggies or meat, he seemed to prefer sweeter foods.
The feast continued until late night…
