Leo's frustration reached a boiling point, bubbling up within him until he couldn't contain it any longer. He threw his hands up in the air with a defeated gesture, the weight of his emotions heavy on his shoulders. "Whatever," he muttered with an exhale, turning abruptly on his heel and striding off in a seemingly random direction.
Kai watched him go, his eyes following Leo's movements with a mixture of concern and curiosity. His brow furrowed slightly as he spoke, his voice calm but laced with underlying questions. "Where are you going?"
Leo didn't bother to look back or slow down as he answered, his tone resolute and determined. "Anywhere that's not around you. I'm feeling better now and I think it's best if we part ways." The words hung heavy in the air, final and loaded with unspoken tension.
Kai's expression remained unreadable, but there was a subtle shift in his posture - a slight stiffening of his shoulders and a tautness to his muscles. Leo continued to walk away, the weight of their unresolved issues trailing behind him like a lingering fog.
Kai grumbled under his breath, his footsteps silent against the forest floor as he followed Leo at a distance. Despite Kai's efforts to remain unnoticed, Leo was aware of his presence but was too consumed by anger to care.
With each step, Leo's frustration only grew, fueling him forward on a reckless path. Suddenly, without warning, the ground beneath him gave way and he tumbled into a deep hole. The impact knocked the wind out of him, leaving him gasping for air and struggling to catch his bearings.
Meanwhile, Kai had reached the edge of the hole and looked down with concern etched on his face. "Leo! Are you okay?" he called out urgently.
Leo attempted to respond but could only manage strained gasps. Ignoring his protests, Kai quickly climbed down into the hole with careful but swift movements.
As he reached Leo's side, Kai assessed his condition, his hands gentle but firm as he helped Leo sit up. Despite his pride being bruised from their earlier argument, Leo weakly tried to push Kai away. "Get off," he muttered through gritted teeth.
But Kai paid no heed to his protests and instructed him sternly, "You need to stretch out. Lift your arms over your head." Reluctantly, Leo followed his instructions, feeling the strain in his body slowly ease as he raised his arms above himself. Gradually, his breathing steadied and Kai's calm presence provided a sense of reassurance amidst the chaos of their situation.
Leo closed his eyes as he took slow, deliberate breaths, willing himself to calm down. The heat of Kai's hand on his back startled him, and he opened his eyes to meet Kai's intense gaze. There was a palpable connection between them, one that Leo couldn't ignore.
"You're a hard person to figure out," Leo said, unable to contain his curiosity and frustration.
Kai's expression remained stoic, giving nothing away. "I want to keep it that way," he replied in a flat tone, devoid of any emotion.
But Leo refused to let it go. He pushed further, determined to break through Kai's walls. "Why? What happened to you that was so bad it turned you into such a jerk?" His voice was tinged with desperation.
Kai's composure finally cracked under the pressure. "I watched everyone die, and it was my fault!" he yelled, his voice filled with raw emotion.
The words hung heavy in the air, the weight of Kai's revelation hitting Leo like a punch to the chest. In that moment, he understood the pain and guilt that Kai carried with him, and the fragile truce between them shattered. A new level of understanding had been reached, their perspectives forever changed by Kai's tumultuous past.
