Leo's mind kept wandering to how close Kai was. The cramped confines of the closet only heightened his awareness of Kai's presence. He couldn't help but stare at him, his eyes tracing the lines of Kai's face. Despite the danger lurking just outside, Leo's thoughts were dominated by the enigmatic figure in front of him.
His cheeks flushed when Kai met his gaze, his expression unreadable as his eyes locked onto Leo's. The sound of the creature outside was barely audible, but Leo dared not peel his eyes away from Kai's no matter how much he wanted to. The intensity of Kai's gaze was almost too much to bear, and Leo felt a mix of curiosity and unease.
Without thinking, Leo's eyes dropped to Kai's mouth for a brief moment. He quickly corrected himself and looked back into Kai's eyes, embarrassed by his lapse in control. Kai hadn't even looked away, just continued to stare with an emotionless expression. What was his story, Leo wondered. What lay behind those impenetrable eyes?
The creature outside shifted, the sound echoing faintly through the walls. But all Leo could focus on was the closeness of Kai, the mystery that surrounded him, and the inexplicable pull he felt towards him.
Finally, Kai broke the silence, his breath warm on Leo's cheeks which were still flushed from embarrassment. "It should be safe now," he whispered.
Leo's heart raced, both from the danger and the proximity of Kai. He nodded slowly, still unable to tear his gaze away from Kai's eyes. The moment lingered, filled with tension and unspoken questions, before Kai carefully opened the closet door and led them back into the uncertain world outside.
Kai looked around cautiously, his sharp eyes scanning the surroundings. After a few tense moments, he turned to Leo and said, "The creature has definitely left."
Leo exhaled a breath he hadn't realized he was holding. "Good," he said, his voice still shaky.
"We should find a safe place to camp for the night," Kai suggested, his tone calm and measured.
"No," Leo interjected, shaking his head. "We need to push on, get further away from here. It might still be lurking around."
Kai hesitated, clearly weighing their options. "It's getting dark, Leo. Traveling in the dark is risky."
Leo's determination didn't waver. "I can't rest knowing that thing might be close by. We need to put as much distance between us and it as possible."
Kai sighed but finally nodded. "Alright, we'll keep moving. But stay close and keep your guard up."
As they continued through the darkening streets, Leo's exhaustion became more evident. Every step felt heavier, but his senses were on high alert. The fear of the creature and the adrenaline of their narrow escape kept him from even considering sleep.
The night grew darker, and the ruins of the city seemed even more foreboding. Leo's eyes darted to every shadow, his body tense and ready for any sign of danger. Despite his weariness, he pressed on, driven by the need to survive.
Kai led the way with a steady pace, his presence a reassuring anchor in the uncertainty of the night. Though Leo was utterly exhausted, he knew they had to keep going until they found a truly safe place to rest.
Leo was so exhausted he stopped worrying about what was around him. It was as if he was sleepwalking, but semi-conscious. Kai watched him closely, noticing the signs of fatigue. "It's time to stop and find shelter for the night," Kai said firmly.
Leo's stubborn response was a hard no. "We have to keep moving," he insisted, his voice strained.
When Leo went to take another step, he felt very lightheaded and fell forward. Kai caught him just in time, his grip strong and steady. "We're finding a place before you get us both killed, you idiot," Kai said, his tone a mix of frustration and concern.
Leo tried to protest, but he could hardly get his feet moving. Kai maneuvered in a way where he could lift Leo onto his back and carry him. To Leo, his body felt heavy and uncooperative, but Kai carried him effortlessly.
Leo began to mutter something incoherent, his exhaustion making it difficult to form words. Kai scoffed and called him an idiot. "You're going to get us both killed if you keep this up," he said, adjusting Leo on his back as he continued to search for a safe place to rest.
