The morning sun filtered through the broken windows, casting a warm glow across the room. Leo stirred, feeling slightly more rested but still aching from his injuries. He sat up slowly, taking in his surroundings. Kai was already up, packing his supplies into a worn backpack.
In the daylight, Leo could finally take in Kai's appearance. He seemed tall, with a lean but muscular build. His blonde hair, slightly tousled, caught the sunlight, adding a faint halo effect. Kai's face, though hardened by the harshness of this new world, was not bad looking. His features were sharp and defined, with a steely determination evident in his eyes.
Leo watched him for a moment before speaking. "I'm leaving today. Thanks for everything, but I need to be on my own."
Kai didn't look up from his task. "You're still injuried. Going off on your own isn't a good idea."
"I've managed this long," Leo insisted, determination in his voice. "I can't rely on anyone. It's too dangerous."
Kai paused, finally meeting Leo's gaze. "It's dangerous out there, and with your condition, you'll be an easy target. Staying a while longer won't hurt."
Leo felt a surge of frustration. "Why do you care? We don't even know each other."
Kai's expression remained unreadable. "Because I've see too many people not make it. You can avoid being another one of those stories."
Leo hesitated, the logic in Kai's words battling with his ingrained mistrust. "I'll just slow you down," he said, looking for an excuse to leave.
Kai shrugged. "I've managed this long. Having someone around might not be so bad."
Leo crossed his arms, his frustration evident. "I can't stay. I need to keep moving."
Kai took a step closer, his presence imposing but not aggressive. "You'll get yourself killed out there," he said, his voice low and intense.
Leo tried to hold his ground, but as Kai moved even closer, their faces were now inches apart. The sudden proximity made Leo's heart beat faster. He could feel Kai's breath and see the intensity in his eyes. The closeness was unnerving, and Leo felt flustered and speechless.
"You need to stick around," Kai continued, his tone unwavering. "At least until you're healed. After that, do what you want."
Leo swallowed hard, his mind racing. Kai's insistance and the intensity of their exchange left him unsure of how to respond. "I... I don't know," he stammered, the words barely audible.
Kai didn't back away, his gaze locked on Leo's. "Just give it a few days. You owe yourself that much."
Leo nodded slowly, the fight leaving him. "Okay," he whispered. "A few days."
Kai finally stepped back, the tension in the room easing slightly. "Good," he said, turning back to his preparations. "We'll see how things go."
Leo took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing heart. The exchange had left him more uncertain than ever, but one thing was clear-Kai's presence was a puzzle he wasn't sure he wanted to solve.
