~George’s Room~
“What happened after all that?”
George asked in anticipation, completely enthralled by Nicholas’s story.
“I told my parents what really happened. How Johnny and his friends have been treating me. And even after he got expelled, we still decided to move anyway.”
“I'm leaving the school, but moving out of your own house? What’s up with that?”
“There’s a lot of financial issues going on at the same time as well. We couldn’t even stay at our own house for long. Then your parents became our saving grace and offered us a room.”
“Okay, that makes sense. What happened to that woman, Miss Esther? She saw you use your powers.”
“She promised to keep it a secret and I think she quit her job from the school.”
Nicholas smiled.
“But she did say that we’ll meet again someday.”
George scratched his head.
“I don’t know how I feel about that man. Some random adult woman knows you have those weird powers, who knows what she’s gonna do with that information!”
“I don’t believe she’s gonna do anything bad. She’s been helping me stay away from Johnny when she didn’t have to. I believe she really cares about me.”
George shrugged.
“Whatever you say, man. But I guess no one’s gonna believe it anyway without definitive proof.”
Nicholas sighed dejectedly.
“I can’t believe it happened again. It happened years ago back when you and I were younger.”
George chuckled.
“Yeah, when we were wrestling each other and I took it too far.”
George turned around and lifted up his shirt. He showcased a nasty burn mark on his back. Nicholas stared at the floor in shame.
“I’m sorry…”
“Forget it, man. I don’t blame you for that anymore, we were just stupid kids. Plus it was my fault for being too rough.”
“But I shouldn’t have hurt you like that regardless.”
“Dude, I love you like a brother. Honestly, it’s fine.”
“I mean, you get that burn on your back is the reason we stopped playing together for years! I hurt you so badly but your parents never really figured out I caused it, right?”
“Nope! I made up some lame excuse saying we were playing near the fireplace or something. They bought it pretty easily!”
George let out a hearty laugh.
“All's well that ends well!”
Nicholas sighed relief before asking the next question.
“So…what’s your school Golden Feathers High like?”
“It’s both a high school and a middle school, it looks like the inside of a mansion and most of the teachers are pretty decent. I think you’ll like it, but listen, even though I will be with you most of the time I can’t protect you from everyone and everything. Also, there’s this one particular student you need to watch out for. I’ll give you some pointers tomorrow.”
“Anything else?“
“I have a friend named Daniel and he’s very cool. I actually told him about your powers.”
“You told someone!?”
Nicholas shouted while standing up.
“Relax, he doesn’t believe me, which sucks actually. He called me a liar, I hate it when people call me a liar!”
“What happened to keep this a secret!? You’re mad at me for letting a teacher know and you go and tell a random person!”
“Daniel’s my best friend, I've known him since I was in fourth grade. And I didn’t mean to spill, it just kinda slipped out during a heated conversation. And like I said he didn’t believe me…but I kinda want him to believe me so show him your fire powers!”
“George, I can’t control it, you should know that fact after what happened years ago and listening to my recent story.“
“Well then find a way to control dude! I want to show him that I’m not a liar!”
“You shouldn’t have told him in the first place…”
After that, George let out a sigh,
“Anyway, you wanna play some video games?”
“As long as it’s not the shooting type. I’m bad at gun games and the loud noises scare me.“
“Everything scares you, come on let’s play some!”
As George was rummaging through his collector of console games, Nicholas sat on the bed and looked up to the ceiling that displayed a fake night sky and glittery stars.
“I’m just praying to God I’m praying that my powers don’t act up and that I have a normal school year with no problems…”
~In Another State. Inside an Abandoned Cathedral ~
Ms. Esther, who is wearing a hat and carrying a bag, walks into the cathedral. On the podium is one man waiting for her. He looked to be around the same age, with short scarlet red hair and bright blue eyes. He wore a fedora and a suit that was white with red stripes.
“There you are!” The Man shouted while pointing at Ms. Esther. “I have been calling you for days and you know I don’t like working these damn phones! They are too confusing!”
“I’m sorry, I couldn’t help but explore this era. It is truly interesting how humanity has evolved over the years.”
Ms. Esther threw down a heavy brown bag in front of The Man.
“Also…we should turn this boy…”
“Huh?”
Ms. Esther lifted the bag to reveal an unconscious Johnny who was tied up and gagged. The Man groaned and leaned against the podium exhausted.
“Why?”
Ms. Esther answered, “He witnessed a wizard’s power. There were three others but Veronica took care of them in…another way….”
“Which is the most preferable way!” The Man proclaimed. “We don’t want the people of this society to know the truth! Also, you found a wizard? Please tell me you killed him!”
“...yes.”
“Good. And I guess I can discuss with the others about turning this boy. In the meantime, we should rile up the others. The time is approaching when that thing will awaken…”
Ms. Esther got up to the Man’s face. She grabbed him by the collar of his shirt and picked him up as if he was a child. Her eyes were fierce as wolves and fangs could be seen at the corner of her snarling mouth.
“How many times have I told you…stop calling her a thing…”
“Well, whatever the hell she is, it's going to wake up soon. The first to fall will be our precious Gringerfield, and then the world…”
