The moment I heard the bell that started the fight, I decided to take the center of the ring, so did my opponent.
Once we were at the right distance, the action began. We both wanted to control the pace of this fight, and neither of us was willing to give in.
With quick and controlled exchanges, we both fought for the center of the ring. I could see a great level of technique that is only achieved after a lot of effort polishing it. Winning was not going to be easy.
We both dodged, punched and feinted in a spectacular way, almost like a beautiful choreography.
During that first round I managed to demonstrate a significant difference in both of our skills, winning the round with a unanimous decision from the judges.
After that, I returned to my corner to prepare for the next round.
"You did very well, but don't get too confident, this is only the first round and we don't know how much energy that boy has left"
"No need to worry... No one could last long after receiving so many blows from me" I replied between sighs.
The bell rang again and we both returned to the center of the ring to exchange blows.
Confident of achieving victory, I decided to take the initiative from the start. But the first round, in which I had dominated with ease, had been just a mirage.
This boy, younger than me and apparently also more agile, had managed to corner me in the second round in the blink of an eye.
The blows, increasingly stronger, shook my body. My vision was blurring, I was short of breath, but I had no intention of giving up, I remembered the words of my trainer, an old boxing sea dog, when his eyes still burned with passion for the sport.
"Never give up champ, as long as there is a bit of breath in your body, there is hope. If you can't use your arms use your legs, if you can't use your legs use your teeth, no matter what, give it your all until the end."
"Don't... Give up... until the end"
I stammered.
At that moment, I had a familiar sensation, my body was about to give in.
But at the same time, another feeling invaded me, my body felt... Light?
On the verge of collapse, I clung to that feeling and didn't let it go.
With a last superhuman effort and, against all odds, I landed a series of blows that made my opponent stagger, but the effort had been too much, I used up every last drop of energy I had left.
I fell to the ground, exhausted, while the surprised audience burst into applause.
Lorenzo had lost the fight, but he had won something much more valuable, the respect and admiration of a man who would change his life.
Fernandez, the organizer of an innovative boxing project, had been impressed by Lorenzo's tenacity. At the end of the fight, he decided to approach him with a proposition.
