— Hey, are you awake?— It was a woman's voice.
I unconsciously looked at the camera.
– Don't worry, they can't hear us.— she said as if she had read my mind.— If you keep your head down or just look at the wall they will think you are praying or that you have already gone crazy from being locked up.
—¿Who are you?
—My name is Mina, they locked me up here too. It's good to have some company, it's been a while since I spoke to someone who wasn't part of the organization.
–¿What is this place? Why did they lock us up here?
— Straight to the point, huh? I wanted to make a nice friendship before talking about our misfortunes, you know.
—And, why didn't you do it before?
I asked, deducing that if she was my neighbor she must have been there since I arrived, however, I never knew of her existence until now.
Mina remained silent for a few long seconds before answering in a much quieter voice.
—I've been busy.
I wanted to ask what she was talking about, but the tense atmosphere told me it would be better not to do so at the moment, so I returned to my initial question.
–¿What are we doing here?
—Gosh, Didn't they tell you? That's incredible. We are candidates for the PAROX project, well, you are a possible candidate, I am already part of it.
–Project?
–You saw those monsters out there, right? PAROX is in charge of investigating a way to defeat them. Apparently they knew of their existence long before any of us, damn, what a corrupt government.—She muttered disgusted.
She clicked her tongue before continuing.
–Anyway, they've been doing their research for a long time and they want us to be part of it.
—Is that all?— I asked confused.—If they only wanted our help, why did they lock us up here? What exactly are they doing to try to defeat them?
—They experiment by creating weapons and perform autopsies on the bodies of dead monsters to try to find some common weakness. Conventional weapons don't work against all of them, so they hope to create one that can defeat them all.
— And what do we know about that?!— I shouted, jumping out of bed. I couldn't believe how ridiculous the situation was.— I understand that they want to do something to save the world, but we're just civilians, ¡¿what the hell can we do?!
—Shhh, lower your voice, they'll hear us.
—¡I don't care! I'm not a weapons expert or a scientist nor part of the military. What do they expect me to do?! I can't help them.
–¡H-hey!, ¿aren’t you listening?
– I shouldn't be here! It's Their job to figure out how to beat them, not mine. I have my own problems, I have to find my brother! I have to...
—¡Shut up!—She exclaimed, hitting the wall.
I closed my mouth, startled by the sudden change in tone and attitude of my seemingly peaceful neighbor.
—Hey... do you know what they call me? - She asked in a calmer tone.
—What does that have to do with...?
—Subject 658. - She answered, interrupting me once again. — And I'm sure they call you by a similar name.
Going back in my memory I remembered what the doctor had called me before. "Subject 735."
—They don't even bother to know our names. They brought me here shortly after the attacks began, they saved me from a monster and I thought I was safe, until they locked me up here.
She paused briefly.
— We're not here to help them find a way to create a weapon... We're here to be a weapon.
—¿What?
—We're just guinea pigs. They believe that the best weapon against these creatures is the human being itself, therefore, they do experiments on humans, to turn us into weapons.
—¿W-weapons?— I stammered with barely a voice.—¿H-how...?
I heard her sigh from the other side.
— I wanted to tell you in a more subtle way, but you didn't give me a choice. Sooner or later you had to know.— She said regretfully.— I'm sorry to tell you this, but they won't let us go. Now we are part of their twisted experiment.
I had to sit back down on the bed when I felt my legs starting to fail.
A weapon, the government wants to turn me into a weapon to fight monsters. All I wanted was to live in peace with my brother, and now I not only have to fight to survive, but I have to become a living weapon.
— What if we don't manage to become weapons?—I asked in barely a whisper, luckily she managed to hear me.
—What do you think? There are only two ways to get out of here: being a government weapon or dead.
I knew it, I already knew that would be the answer, but I still hoped it wasn't that. Hearing that she was right made my chest hurt and my mind spin.
I wanted to know more, I needed to know more, but I had the slight feeling that if I heard one more word I wouldn't be able to bear it. For my emotional and mental sake I decided to drop the subject for today saying a broken "thank you" to Mina.
I laid on my back, staring at the empty white ceiling, thinking about nothing and everything at once. The last thing I remember from that night was crying myself to sleep.
I woke up when the bedroom door was slammed. Through it came a teenage girl with a panda jacket and purple hair. She looked kind of cute, but at the same time there was an eerie aura around her. Her eyes were different colors, one of them was brown while the other was a gray color, too light to look natural. Above the gray eye, a thin but noticeable scar shaped like a lightning bolt crossed over her eyelid until it reached her cheekbone.
After she came in, three armed men with a dominant aura, however, it was obvious that she had a higher hierarchical position than them.
—Wow, so this is the boss's new acquisition, huh?
I retreated onto the bed when she approached eating a cherry lollipop. She tilted her head a couple of times, examining me, before speaking.
— You don't seem like much. What did he see in you?—She straightened up and gave me one last once-over before shrugging.—Well whatever, recruiting isn't my job. Come on, let's see what you're worth.
She turned around, the tall and strong men approached me and began to drag me towards the exit.
—¡W-wait! Where are we going?
—Oh, you can talk. You're already healed, so it's time for your evaluation. We'll know if you really have what it takes to be part of our team.
–W-what if I don't want to be part of it?— I dared to ask.
She suddenly stopped. A chill ran down my spine when she looked at me out of the corner of her eye with cold, empty eyes, totally different from those of a moment ago. The atmosphere became heavy and a danger alert went off in my mind.
—Then there's no reason for us to keep you alive anymore.
