Halloween Special: The Curse of Sleepy Hollow, Part 7

Due to no longer being able to return to the hotel, they decided to park in the middle of the darkness and sleep in the car. Finally, they were able to rest.
Select was walking down a dark hallway, guided by a faint light. He didn’t know where he was, or why he was there. He only knew that he wasn’t alone.
“Hello, Select,” a voice said from behind him.
When he turned around, he found Edward Smith, his former enemy.
“Smith… I tried to save you. I swear,” Select said.
“Where is your sense of humor now, huh? You know that won’t always protect you,” Smith replied.
“I know. What am I doing here?”
Smith shrugged.
“You figure it out.”
“I believe… unfortunately, I know.”
Smith smiled.
“And?”
“Deep down, I feel like you deserved it.”
Smith started laughing.
“Well, well, I didn’t see that coming. And maybe you’re right.”
“Select!” Maxine yelled.
Select jumped up.
“Maxine! I… I fell asleep.”
“It’s not your fault to feel that way about Smith.”
“How do you know…?”
“You were talking aloud.”
Select fell silent.
“It wasn’t your fault, and it’s understandable to think he deserved it; he tried to kill me even. But that doesn’t mean you are responsible for his death, or that you even wanted it.”
“Thank you, Maxine, for everything.”
Maxine smiled.
“Thank you.”
Kate appeared out of nowhere.
“Are we getting out of the car or what?”
Select was startled.
“Don’t do that again.”
The group set out in search of some clues about the Headless Horseman and why Freya is investigating it too.
Their first stop was the Sleepy Hollow Library, looking for old newspapers.
They searched for a while, looking and looking, until Kate found something interesting.
“Guys! Look at this.”
A publication from 1790 revealed the arrival of a new teacher in the town: Ichabod Crane.
“The protagonist of Irving’s story… really existed.”
“And not just him, but Katrina Van Tassel, his love interest in the story,” Maxine commented.
Select looked at the newspaper.
“Very intriguing, it says here that Ichabod mysteriously disappeared one night.”
“I remember in the story there was someone else interested in Katrina, a guy named Abraham.”
“So many names are going to escape me,” Kate remarked.
“It might be related, his last name was… Van Brunt?”
“Yes, that’s the one…”
“Wait, you mentioned there was a Hessian soldier somewhere, right, Select?”
Select’s eyes widened.
“That’s right! I almost forgot. Let’s go!”
Once there, they found a corpse in front of them emitting a terrible odor.
“I regret coming here…”
Select began to inspect the corpse.
“It’s not him. This one has its head intact.”
“But then, is there no connection?”
Although he almost thought there was, he noticed a strange mark between the bones of the head and the rest of the body.
“This… is strange, it’s as if it got stuck.”
Maxine looked at Select, with a thought.
“What if this was the former Headless Horseman?”
“Explain, how was it?”
“It’s a theory, but maybe if he gets someone’s head, he’ll be freed from the curse… And it will pass on to another person.”
“How the hell did you come up with that?” Kate said, impressed.
“Thinking about werewolves or vampires, and voilà.”
When the most famous stories and artifacts prove to be true, an ironic archaeologist with a lot of luck will have to face formidable enemies who want to use them for their plans.
From Excalibur to passing through Sleepy Hollow, the dangers will not end for Select and company.
