Chapter 11 Red lights
Lee’s face drained as the piece shot around the board making circles. It flew from one corner to the next almost leaving thier fingertips behind. It took them a moment to decipher the pattern that it was spellingover and over.
D… V… O… I…D…. V... O...
Lee's blood ran cold and the color drained from thier face. Suddenly, even though they could see the space heater on in the corner, they could have sworn the room was as cold as outside. They brought thier hands to thier face covering thier mouth, leaving the planchette on the board beneath I'Ksha's fingertips. She looked up at them, and Lee willed themself to look away but they could feel it. They could feel the way she stared at them, the fear that had suddenly begun to radiate off of her. "What did it say?" I'Ksha asked in a small wavering voice.
“Void” Lee whispered.
“Lee…” I’Ksha spoke slowly, “did you see something when you did the spell the other night?”
Lee opened their mouth to speak but they fell silent, something was wrong. Looking around the room seemed to be as it was before but something felt off. The pulling they had grown accustomed to began again, wobbling around thier gut, spinning nausiating circles. They looked back to their friend who’s eyes were wide. “It's so quiet.” I’Ksha mouthed and Lee realized what was wrong. The heaters humm and bubbling of the fish tank had been replaced by eerie silence and Lee could hear their heartbeat pounding in their ears. Under I'Ksha's fingertips the planchet began to move again, shifting out from her grasp, sliding across the board on it’s own. I'Ksha slammed her hand down hard on the planchet, trying to regain power over it but it flew off of the board onto the floor, bouncing across the carpet making no sound. She looked back at Lee, her eyes wide. “What did you see?” She mouthed, no sound escaping her lips.
Slowly a deep scratching sound creeped into the room, crawling its way into their ears. It reminded Lee of the sound of the tree that would rub on Alice's bedroom walls when they were children though, they had only heard it a handful of times. Alice had been so scared of that tree, claiming it was actually evil spirits trying to open the window. I’Ksha grabbed for Lee’s hand tightly squeezing it. Her hands had gone cold, the warmth they usually had vanished in the chill of the room. Lee saw pillows of steam rise in front of thier faces as they breathed heavely. The room’s light shifted from the orange of the space heater to a vibrant and angry red. Red lights poured into the room. Looking for it's source Lee spun their head around until they saw it, beams of light shining through the windows above them that they could have sworn had been covered by snow moments before. The soft crunch of the snow under foot accompanied the scratching and an eerie rattling gradually increased as the sound got closer to the windows outside. Lee slid off of the bed dragging I’Ksha with them and laid flat on thier stomach next to the side of the bed, hiding from the light.
“What the fuck is going on?” I’Ksha mouthed. Something was off about her face and Lee realised that she was screaming but no sound was coming out. she wasnt just mouthing the words, she had been trying to talk this entire time. Lee tried to speak themself but thier voice never left thier lips. Panicing they tried to scream and felt thier throat go raw as if they had but it was like the creature had swollowed it up with his presence. This is all my fault. Thier mind spiraled the thought around refusing to let it go. This is my fault I am going to be the reason I'Ksha gets hurt. I'm the reason another friend is going to die. Lee felt I'Ksha pulling at thier arm, she was propped up by her elbow. She didnt look furious, she looked scared. They gently pushed I'Ksha 's shoulders so that she was laying on the floor on her back and hoped that would be enough to hide the two of them for now.
“Can you see what I am seeing?” Lee asked wordlessly.
I'Ksha nodded and pointed at the window where the light was shining from. It began to slowly move to the next window, beaming a large spotlight down into the room. The rattling grew louder and Lee heard the deep menacing voice again. “Oh Child,” it playfully called out to Lee and they felt fear settle into thier spine, “I told you I would not be so kind this time.” The sound of nails scraping along brick grew outside the room. Lee looked back at I’Ksha and froze. Her face was a mixture of fear and … anger. Lee could feel their eyes begin to water. This was exactly what they were afraid would happen, and worse, they had dragged I’Ksha into it. They felt tears roll down their face, falling off of the tip of their nose. I’Ksha squeezed Lee’s hand. Looking back at her she furrowed her brow and nodded at the carpet at the edge of the bed. She pointed at Lee then the carpet, herself then the bed. Her message was clear. I’Ksha would grab the board and Lee would grab the planchett. Lee shook their head. It wasn't a good idea to move, what if they were caught? They felt I’Ksha press something deep into their hand. Holding it up, they couldn't tell the color but they knew it was their crystal from the store. The meaning was clear. I trust you, you have to trust me.
Lee nodded, letting go of I'Ksha 's hand and began to slowly shuffle to the end of the bed. The red light wasn't far from the edge and they had no idea how they were going to avoid it. Somehing in them knew if they came into the light that the monster, whatever it was, would see them. A loud 'BANG' thundered in their ears and dust trickled down from the ceiling. It was followed by another and then another. “I know you're in there little plaything.” The deep voice mocked. 'BANG' “LET ME IN!”
The banging continued as Lee finally made it to the end of the bed. In the red light everything was hard to decipher. It took them a moment to find the planchett, but they saw it… in the middle of the floor. They glanced behind them. I’Ksha had her head dropped down behind the bed and her arm wrapped in Lee's binder, slowly moving it over the edge of the bed, inching towards the board. Turning around they saw the light not a foot from their face. There was no way making a dash for it would work. Not while that light was covering the room. Behind them they heard a tap. Shooting their eyes back they saw I’Ksha, her arm fully over the side of the bed. She nodded at them and mouthed, “I’ve got my hand on the board.”
Lee scrambled for ideas. The banging became quieter as the light moved to the next window, the light now inches from their face slowly creeped closer millimeter by millimeter. Lee felt the crystal in their hand and tried to place it on the floor out of the way and braced themself to crawl. As they placed it down it made a light 'tap'. Lee stared at it, picked it up and placed it down again with a 'tap'. They took a deep breath, crystal in hand and shifted onto their elbows and knees. They brought their hand back and flung the crystal to the opposite side of the room, hoping the creature had not seen where it was thrown from. The crystal bounced around the corner of the walls and onto the floor sounding like a glass marble. The light condensed into a spotlight, no bigger than a dinner plate and quickly darted in the noise's direction. Lee shuffled out from behind the bed, extended their arm for the planchett, just out of reach.
They heard shuffling behind them as I’Ksha quickly pulled the ouiji board off the bed. The voiced bellowed out a growl as the light began to expand again and Lee finally grabbed onto the planchett. They felt hands around their waist and fought back a scream as they were pulled backwards. Turning around they saw I’Ksha, half hidden under her bed with the board in front of her, her hands on Lee's waist. Lee fumbled as they placed the planchett onto the board. The two tried to move the wooden piece across 'goodbye' but it felt like there was a force keeping them from that part of the board, like when you tried to push the wrong ends of two magnets together. Lee shifted up straightening their arms and placing their whole body weight onto the wooden planchett dragging it across 'goodbye'. They felt the red light burn at their skin as they raised thier head and shoulders over the bed and heard the deep laughing of the creature as it began to bang on the windows. It was almost at the end of the word, just a bit more push but it felt like a wall was in the way. Lee felt I'Ksha's hands on thier own lift up and she slammed them down onto Lee's hands and the wooden piece. The planchet flew across the remainder of the word as I'Ksha slammed down. The planchett skipped across the floor.
The sounds of the banging and laughter faded as the red light slowly dissipated from the room. Both Lee and I’Ksha laid on their backs breathing heavy. They could finally hear each other and Lee heard the sound of the heaters and the bubbling of the fishtank return to them. They looked over to their friend. Her chest was rising and falling quickly, her bonnet was half off of her head and a few of her braids had fallen out. she had beads of sweat falling down har face and she wiped them off as she turned to Lee. As her eyes met Lee's embarrassment and dread settled into Lee’s chest. Before they knew it, like they had no control, they were quickly standing up and pulling their jeans on.
“W-what was that thing?!” I’Ksha gasped at them. Lee continued to looking franticly for their binder, finding it half hidden under the bed. I'Ksha sat up and tried to reach for Lee to still them. “Lee? What the fuck was that?”
Lee pulled the hood of their coat up and fumbled with the zippers on their boots. “I'm sorry, I'm so sorry.” Tears were streaming down their face, they could barely see. The second the last boot was zipped up, shoving their shirt and binder into their winter jacket’s pocket they dashed to the stairs. Before they clambered up the stairs they turned for one last look around the room. I’Ksha was struggling to stand up, tears rolling down her face. All Lee could do was say they were sorry as they ran up the stairs and out of the house.
