Author's Note:
I believe survivors.
Survivors’ stories are often overlooked, and to add to survivors’ trauma, perpetrators are often glorified or used as a tool to perpetuate ableism against those with mental health conditions. The terrible irony is that many survivors are disabled, possibly even by their perpetrator’s abuse. Far too often, survivors are also the only ones to face the ramifications of the trauma their perpetrators forced upon them.
I’ve written Soul Survivors to showcase survivor perspectives, highlighting their emotions, challenges, and lived experiences in managing the consequences of trauma. Topics arise that may be difficult for some to read.
Please take care of yourself with the following in mind: Soul Survivors contains topics of war, abuse, PTSD, cults, pregnancy, miscarriage, and chronic illness. While acts of sexual abuse are never “shown,” survivors’ resulting feelings and trauma’s physical consequences are discussed.
If you or someone you know is struggling through the impacts of trauma, there are those of us out there willing to witness your truths. Please seek the care you deserve, as you matter immensely to me and your loved ones. Unsure where to start your search for support? Feel free to visit my website (riverkaiart.com/soulsurvivors/content-advisory) for a list of mental health resources.
One final note: oppression harms everyone. I stand with survivors, and I refuse to look the other way.
And since it can’t be said enough times, and I imagine you may need to hear it from someone again…
I believe you.
With All My Love,
RIVER KAI
