Whilst the Twins were learning about the Guild, their dear elder Sister Sera was...nodding off. She tried to keep her eyes open wide to see and confirm her Father's words. However, as soon as the history teacher walked through the door saying good morning. Her eyelids started to drop along with her head, only to jolt back up and open her eyes again. This cycle continued, because every time she started heading towards dreamland, Tseli sitting next to her, would jab her with their hand.
Due to the fact that this time she wasn’t fully asleep, Sera caught glimpses of not just the teacher, but also the many other students that were happily sleeping on their desks. Too many. Sera's dopy mind turned as she realized, Damn! As expected of the ultimate prankster, he's infusing his voice with mana as if it were a sleep charm! Sera's eyes opened wide then narrowed. She grinned, In that case.
Sera gathered her mana, remembering the counter spell Phim had taught her. Just that, due to still nodding on and off, she couldn't control the range of effect and used it on the whole class. Many students were startled awake. Some shouted the contents of their dream, some just fell from their seats and one poor ox Beastman fellow, well it should actually be two fellows, woke up suddenly and collided with the head of his friend that had been trying to wake him up... that friend was a rhinoceros Beastman, the collision of two hard heads could be imagined. Sera and Tseli winced at the sound of their collision. The history teacher had raised his brow in surprise by Sera dispelling his sleep charm, but then felt funny and guilty towards the two hard-headed students.
The history teacher cleared his throat loudly to bring the students' attention back. Once Sera looked back at the teacher, her eyes lit up brightly, He really is the Chancellor, just like Papa said! Confirming this fact with her own eyes, Sera used the spell to transfer thoughts into words on paper, to add a final note at the end of her homework.
After the other formerly sleeping students snapped out of their daze, realizing why they were always falling asleep during history class, every single one of them shot an accusing and aggrieved glare at the Chancellor. Whilst the students that hadn’t slept during class looked puzzled over why all the sleepers suddenly awoke at the same time. Many were also wondering if those two poor fellows’ heads were Ok after their loud collision. One looked as if he was seeing stars above his head, and the other… passed out.
“I can explain my reasons for this.” The Chancellor scratched the tip of his nose in embarrassment, that Sera lass seems to be my nemesis these days! “But before that… could two of you help Russ and Rye to the infirmary?”
The students looked at each other, you’ll need two people each for those burly guys!
Four strong students sighed and were about to get up to help the two Beastmen up, when a larger existence moved before they could. A Titaness looked down at the two dizzy guys and hoisted up both, one by one onto her shoulders as if they were two sacks of potatoes.
“I’ll take ‘em as there’s no need for me to hear the explanation, Sir’s spell never worked on me in the first place.” She said resolutely as she carried them to the door and left as if she had the wind under her feet.
“…I guess we’ll just leave it to Vaness then.” The Chancellor mourned for the boys’ soon to be crumbled pride… his own had also taken a little hit, just a little though.
The Chancellor stood at the podium and straightened his back as he spoke.
“Now then, to
answer one thing you’re probably wondering. Yes, I did cast a sleep charm ever
since I started teaching you.” As soon as the Chancellor admitted this, he
started to get a chill as his back was covered in cold sweat. The students now
added resentment to their accusing and aggrieved gaze. If looks could kill…. Well, I wouldn’t even be here considering all
those pranks heroic deeds I committed during the war! Remembering
his glorious past, the Chancellor thickened his skin.
“The reason I cast the sleep charm over all of you, especially those who fell asleep due to its effects, is to build up your natural resistance to this sort of spell.” The Chancellor smirked at the shocked, unconvinced, and suspicious gazes he received. “Those who did not get affected by the sleep charm already have natural resistance to it, some born with it, others built up over time... the latter were probably very energetic, so their parents ‘helped’ them to sleep.”
Tseli looked enlightened, Sera nudged her with an elbow.
“What's with that face?” Sera whispered.
“Nah, just thinking it makes sense, when I was very little, I was a loud child, especially at night and would wake up my parents, over time I'd end up passing out suddenly then wake back up in my bed.” Tseli touched her chin in thought. “It makes sense if I think that they probably cast a sleep charm of sorts on me, I have always been awake during this class.”
“Wait, then why didn't you wake me up!?” Sera pouted.
“You looked so comfortable sleeping there I couldn’t bear to wake you.” Tseli chuckled gently. “Besides, to make up for not waking you I did right down important notes of the class for you.”
“Hmph. Fine, I'll forgive you.” Sera puffed her cheeks.
Tseli just smiled then returned her attention to the front. The Chancellor hadn't finished his explanation.
“The importance in creating a natural resistance is in the fact that you'll be safer from those with ill intent. The sleep charm is one of the best spells for an ambush or sneak attack.” The Chancellor spoke solemnly...briefly. “Besides, I figured that history class was the perfect training ground for it. What’s taught isn't any different from what you'd learn by going to the museum, so might as well use it for sleeping.”
The students looked convinced, but at the same time sceptical.
“Anyway! Time to hand in your homework.” The Chancellor decisively changed the subject. Ah, this time they outright grimaced...why is Sera smiling? She should be the most anxious right now!?
Reluctantly, the students, one by one, got up from their seats and gave the Chancellor their homework. Sera was last to hand hers in. She placed it in front of him with a smug look on her face.
“I have completed all the tasks as you asked of me Sir.” Sera smiled sweetly.
The Chancellor narrowed his eyes in suspicion, for the rest of the mountain I got her to do, she's capable of doing them all, but not history. The Chancellor picked up her history homework and skim read it, realizing that she really had written what needed to be done. Once he reached the last note on the last page, his eyes rounded in shock followed by a hearty laugh. He looked at Sera, raised his brow and asked.
“Are you sure that's what you want?”
“Yes!” Sera replied in excitement. “I really want to!”
“Very well.” The Chancellor stroked his beard as he grinned. “I accept!”
Sera fist punched the air ecstatically. “Yes Sir.”
The students couldn’t make heads or tails of what the two talked about. Tseli just shook her head and smiled gently. Well, as long as she's happy.
