A flash of white light burned my corneas; a terrible feeling arose from the pit of my stomach. My name was Katy, I mean Katheryn Percy. I was born in a land of magic and whimsy, but as suddenly as that light appeared, it was all gone. My once pale pink hair was now a dull brown, and even without looking in the mirror, I could tell that my appearance had changed elsewhere, too.
"Katy, what in heaven's name are you doing?" my Mother asked from the other side of the room. I looked up and saw that her purple eyes were now blue, and her hair had also become brown. I couldn't get the words I wanted to say out of my mouth because I was trying so hard to use reversal magic, but nothing was happening. "Katy, what is wrong with you? Put that stupid twig away." I frowned; my wand was now just a mere twig. And I can't even use magic? I took a deep breath and put my wand on the table beside me.
"I'm sorry to worry you, Mother," I said, "I think I need to rest. I have a bit of a headache." Mother frowned.
"All right," Mother said, "I understand. That light that just appeared was very odd indeed. If my eyes weren't closed, I would've been blinded. You have a good rest, Katy."
"Thank you, Mother," I said. Walking to my bedroom, I realized everything was organized as I remembered, but the magic artifacts were replaced with things I didn't recognize. I lay down on my bed and sighed. This was the worst. My dress had stayed the same one I had worn before the light flashed, but it didn't seem as appealing to wear without matching my hair or eyes because I was sure my eyes were no longer purple like my Mother's. I don't know what happened or why that flash of light seemed to destroy all magic, but it certainly wasn't anything I could've predicted.
After about an hour of thinking to myself as I lay on my bed, someone knocked on my door. I was curious to see who it was or why they had come, but I was too shocked to even move from the bed. There was another knock before someone slammed the door open. I looked over to see an unfamiliar group of men behind another man who looked like Mason Prince, except his blue hair was now golden.
"Katheryn Percy, you're under arrest," the one who looked like Mason Prince said, just for me to confirm that it was him. The men grabbed me and pulled me to the ground on my knees.
"Under arrest for what?" I asked as I looked up at him. Mason looked at me with disapproval.
"You don't even know what you're under arrest for?" Mason asked.
"Of course not," I said, "I didn't do anything that would put me under arrest. Why don't you tell me what I supposedly did to see if I did it or not?" Mason sighed.
"You committed treason, Miss Percy," Mason said.
"And how did I do that?" I asked.
"You attempted to kill the King," Mason said, "With that stupidly bright light that came from your mansion."
"That wasn't me," I said, "And it wasn't coming from this mansion. I don't know where it came from or how that was supposedly an attempt on the King's life, but I would never do something that would kill anybody."
"Well, that's weird because I heard that you were waving around a twig right as the light had flashed," Mason said, "That's grounds to call you a witch and burn you at the stake." I was horrified at this notion as it was terrible and cruel, something that shouldn't be done no matter what.
"Then, why don't we check to see if I'm a witch?" I asked, "And if I am, you do that, but if I'm not, you let me go?" Mason laughed.
"We'll see," Mason said, "Guards, let her go for now. I want to talk to her alone." The guards left, and Mason looked at me with concern.
"You've known me since we were children, Mason Prince," I said, "There's no way you'd believe that nonsense, right?"
"Honestly, I'm just here under the first prince's order," Mason said. "He told me to think up a reason to detain you and bring you to the castle. You're not going to be burned at the stake or put in prison. The first prince has plans for you and wants them to be top secret. It'd be better off if your parents believed you were dead or in prison because of these plans."
"Do you even know these plans?" I asked.
"Not a word," Mason said, "But he did say that if I brought you to the castle as soon as possible, he would let us wed." I frowned. The Mason Prince from my world didn't have an ounce of interest in me, but I had been pining for him for as long as I can remember. Maybe it was the opposite in this world?
"Why couldn't we have wed without his permission?" I asked. Mason frowned.
"Because of your Mother's wishes," Mason said, "I thought you would remember that... No, wait, I don't think I ever told you."
"What did she say?" I asked.
"When we were 13," Mason said, "I asked your parents if I could marry you. Your Father agreed because he knew that you were very much in love with me, or at least that is what he said word for word. On the other hand, your Mother said she was against us marrying because your Father's house would have no heir, as I am the heir of my family, and you are an only child." I suddenly remembered that my Mason had grown cold around the same time, but I wasn't the only child my parents had in my world. There was Genevive, my little sister, but then again, she was born when I was 16. "But then they had your sister and... Well, I asked again when we were 19. She rejected, saying Genevive was too young and weak to take over whenever your Father couldn't. So, I said I would work with your Father and give up my rights as heir to my family, as I have two younger brothers who were only about four and five years younger than me. She rejected me a third time and said I shouldn't have to step down as the heir to a dukedom to become a viscount. That upset me, so I went to see if I could have an audience with the King, but instead, I got a summons from the first prince. I told him what had happened, and he told me that it worked out perfectly as he needed you for something important and that nobody was allowed to know the truth behind it aside from you and him, but that I had to somehow get you to him."
"That's a lot to handle," I said, "But it explains a lot. Can you do me a favor?"
"What is it, Katy?" Mason asked.
"Don't tell my Mother," I said. "But I think Mother is like this because she thinks that Father is beneath her, that Mother stepped downwards in rank due to marrying Father, and she doesn't want you to do the same. She doesn't think you like me, which is wrong." Mason frowned.
"The favor was not to tell your Mother, right?" Mason asked. I shook my head.
"No, the favor is for you to kiss me right now," I said. Mason smiled and then kissed me. It wasn't as good as everyone said it would be. No fireworks or anything. Oh... Maybe because it wasn't my world. That could be why it's different, right?
