The two male employees testing them were Hunters because of their armor. The three other Hunters were wearing casual clothing like Freyr.
Two new hunters were women, while the other was a man. They didn’t seem like they knew each other because they were all sitting separately.
“Hello, sir, you must be Freyr Tran, yes?” One of the employees asked just to verify his identity.
“Yes, I am here to get tested for my Hunter’s ID.”
“Perfect, we are waiting another 10 minutes before we start. If you want, you can sit or stand while you wait.”
“Thank you.”
The seats were arranged in four rows of six seats. Freyr decided to sit in the last row because the other three people were sitting in different rows from each other.
He didn’t want to talk with anyone, so he brought out his phone and texted his friends and family. His parents reached out to him, but they couldn’t call because they were at work.
Luckily, they didn’t call him because he was at the Hunter’s Association. They scheduled to call later in the evening, and then he moved on to his two friends.
One of his friends was an A-ranked hunter named Jae Evans. He was currently in District 1, but he made sure to check in on Freyr every day. As for the other friend, his name was Kai Davis and he was a normal person who he used to work with.
The two were worried about him, wondering why he hadn’t responded to their messages.
He gave a somewhat vague explanation as to what happened and how he became a Hunter. He didn’t tell them about his dimensional farm because he wasn’t sure if it was safe to do so. In the end, he said he was going to get his rank and occupation tested at the Hunter’s Association and he would keep them posted.
The latter congratulated him, while the former was worried about him. Being a hunter seemed glamorous, but it was incredibly difficult and life-threatening. If you didn’t get killed in dungeons or the towers, you would get killed by other hunters. Even if the larger guilds had better protections, there was still a chance of getting killed by another hunter.
[Bestie Jae: Didn’t you say you were going to apply for the Liberation Guild? Let me know if you get in so I can help you. I don’t know where you will be stationed, but if you have any questions, I will be happy to answer them.]
Jae was a core member of the team that tackled the tower in the Appalachian Mountains. He had a defensive occupation that focused on creating shields that could absorb a certain amount of damage. Furthermore, he had a special ability called “Absolute Defense” that he could use every six hours and the shield could negate all physical and magic attacks for ten minutes.
[Freyr: Thanks man XD I will keep ya posted. Hopefully, it’s good news!]
Freyr was able to send out a few more texts to his friends before the proctors for Hunter’s tests called out to them.
“Everyone, since there are no other Hunters, we can begin the tests now!” The older proctor spoke into the microphone at the front desk. “Please follow the lines and arrows through this door. Wait at the line for further instructions.”
All the new hunters stood up and followed the red line on the ground. Going through the doors, they could see the red line that the proctor was talking about. In the hallway, the line was a third of the way from the door.
Freyr was last in line, but he was still able to get a good look at the area. There were three doors on each side of the hallway and one at the end of the hallway. On the door, a plaque with small letters on it told what kind of room it was. The doors on the sides of the hallway were testing rooms while the door at the end was where the proctors would be.
The two proctors followed them into the hallway and began directing the hunters to their assigned rooms. Freyr was the only one using the testing room on the right side of the hallway.
When he entered the room, the walls and the ceiling were protected by a barrier. In the center of the room, the table had a pyramid-shaped crystal, a knife, a first aid kit, and a small sharp objects container. The clear crystal was a foot tall and wide.
The older proctor’s voice could be heard through a speaker in the room, “The first part of the exam is to verify your rank. On the table, there is a sterile knife. Let a drop of blood go onto the tip of the pyramid. Be careful not to cut too deep, but if you do, we have healers on standby. Once you are finished, you can throw the knife into the container.”
With everyone in their separate rooms, only the proctors and the tester would be able to see the color the pyramid changes to. Each rank was represented by a color with the light colors being weaker than the darker colors. Each color was the same. For example, white was used to classify Rank F hunters. The lighter the color, the weaker the hunter was. If the color was closer to yellow, which was rank E, then they were stronger in that rank classification.
Freyr walked up to the table and saw the sterile knife in a package. He did as he was told and only made a small cut on his finger. It was enough to let a drop of blood come out.
Once the blood touched the crystal pyramid, it was absorbed right in without leaving a trace.
“It will take 1 minute for the pyramid to process the rank and put it into our database. In the meantime, if you need a healer, please speak up now. If not, you can clean your wound using the first aid kit.”
Freyr didn’t need to do that. He used the heal spell he got when he went to the farm while he was at the hospital. The bulletin board wanted him to turn in 20 of each crop he had already planted, which he had enough of. They gave him more gold coins, a shield, and a heal spell. It made his stash of vegetables smaller, but he was richer in a sense. Honestly, he didn’t think he would use his heal spell so soon.
The heal spell could only heal one person at a time. The stronger spells would be able to heal multiple people at the same time though. To get a stronger spell, he needed to upgrade the one he had. There were 10 levels for the spells, and each needed materials to upgrade it.
Once the small cut was healed, Freyr didn’t touch the first aid kit.
The proctors noted his healing spell and that he could at least heal himself. Healers were always welcomed in guilds. You could never have too many healers.
Once the others finished bandaging themselves, the crystal pyramid was done processing their rank. The two women got a blue color, signifying they were C-ranked while the man got green, signifying he was D-rank but the color was darker, so it was closer to C-rank in strength.
As for Freyr, his rank was as he expected but the color was much darker than he thought. His color was black, but it was pitch black, almost like looking into a black hole.
Then he thought about his occupation which had endless possibilities and felt that it wasn’t too surprising.
“This! Gah—“ The younger proctor was about to shout about Freyr being S-ranked but the older and more experienced proctor elbowed him in the side.
“Do not say another word!”
“Yes, sir…”
The older proctor coughed. “Ahem. Now that you all know what your ranks are, please relax and wait for me or my colleague to enter the room. We will be asking for your Hunter Occupation and seeing your capabilities. Please use as much power as you can as your exam will be sent to your file and looked at by the guilds. Hide what you don’t want others to see yet, but be sure to show how powerful you are if you want to enter a large guild. Good luck everyone and may you all do well on the next part of your exam.”
With his words of encouragement, the other hunters felt like going all out to appeal to the guilds. As for Freyr, he took to heart about hiding what he didn’t want others to see. He had a lot to hide, so for now, he had to make sure he didn’t say or show too much until he got accepted into the Liberation Guild.
Freyr patiently waited for one of the proctors to visit his exam room. They had decided to see the other hunters first before going to Freyr together, just in case one of them was not enough to test Freyr.
Well, on his file, it said he had a support occupation, but with a black color that dark, was he lying about it? It was common practice for support occupations to be lighter in color because the color focused on strength and defense.
What kind of support occupation could he have that made the pyramid look like that?
They entered Freyr’s exam room together and saw the handsome young man standing leisurely in the room. He didn’t look excited or happy, but he was calm and not afraid.
“Hello, Mr. Tran. My name is Proctor Smith and this is my colleague, Proctor Will. It is a pleasure to meet you.”
Proctor Smith was the older gentleman with salt and pepper hair. He didn’t have a full head of hail yet, but it did show he was older. As an older Hunter, he was immediately recruited into the Hunter’s Association and has been there ever since.
As for Proctor Will, he looked like he had just turned 18. He was a support Hunter, so he decided that the Hunter’s Association was better to go to than a guild.
“It is a pleasure to meet you both. My name is Freyr Tran, but you can call me Freyr.”
“Okay, Freyr. Congratulations on becoming an S-ranked hunter.” Proctor Will cheerfully said. He could finally express his excitement and couldn’t wait to brag about testing an S-ranked hunter.
Proctor Smith chimed in, “Yes, congrats on becoming an S-ranked hunter. May we know what your occupation is? You do not have to go into details.”
S-ranked Hunters had specialized occupations that were incredibly strong. That was why, they gave a generalized form of their occupation.
Freyr cheekily replied with a goofy grin, “Farmer… I am a farmer.”
