Leaning against the window of a new Uber ride, Tenny stared at the passing trees. She finally got to clear things up with Professor Thuron, putting her on the road to try and get the real culprit, Chess, to take responsibility for his actions. Tenny looked down at a tissue she took from her pocket, now full of dried blood. No matter what, she decided not to let this ability hold her back.
After nearly thirty minutes of driving, the Uber arrived at the Vellichor campus. Tenny looked at the driver, her tired eyes widening a bit.
“Ah, can you drive a few blocks further?"
She did not want Chess to think she went off campus.
The driver nodded, driving forward five blocks. This driver was a female with a blonde bob cut, and a piercing on the left side of her lip. Her hot pink top was almost as flashy as her deep purple BMW.
“Thank you for the ride.”
Tenny exited the car and closed the passenger’s side door. She faced the campus while the car drove off. Looking around, she scanned for any tall blondes with green glasses.
The coast looks clear.
Tenny walked forward, feeling dizzy for a moment and leaning on a nearby wall for assistance. Although she would not let this ability limit her, it physically drains her to a point where she immediately requires food or water to replenish what energy it takes from her.
Looking up, she entered the campus and searched for nearby benches.
Minutes of walking and searching go by.
Finally, a bench in sight.
Tenny sat down on the closest one she could find, leaning her head back. The trial, the next big obstacle, weighed heavily on her mind. She stared up at the sky and watched birds fly past the large, gathering clouds. It seems a storm is on the way in a few hours.
Tenny leaned forward, withdrawing her phone. She had to contact Juniper about this. Tenny pressed the number when going to the GNW site to get Juniper’s phone contact information.
The number began dialing and ringing for many, many seconds. When it stopped, it asked for an extension. Tenny went to the site while still on the call, typing the extension in on the keypad once she memorized it. Waiting again, Tenny looked ahead and watched the students chat with each other. A student walked behind her bench.
“Who're you calling?”
Tenny jolted, turning her head quickly in Chess' direction.
“Hello, you've reached the GNW law firm, Juniper Na speaking,” a voice emerged from the phone.
Tenny ended the call, not breaking eye contact with Chess.
Chess smiled, walking to Tenny's side and sitting down on the bench. He looked forward, Tenny as well.
"It seems you can't take a hint."
He looked at Tenny.
“Why is that?"
Tenny refused to make eye contact this time, tapping her foot, fearfully. Chess punched the bench, Tenny looking at him.
“I asked you a question.”
Tenny looked away again.
“No matter what I say to you, you're going to want to kill me anyway. So, do it here," she said, standing. “In front of everyone. Or am I not on your agenda?”
Chess glared at Tenny, his bluff caught.
“Trust me. Your time will come."
Chess stood.
“Tenny Hale. There are things beyond your imagination at work here. I expect you to remember that.”
He began to walk away, looking back at Tenny.
“Careful taking steps outside of your dorm. And if you reveal me, I promise you, you won't wake up.”
Chess headed off towards the main hall, withdrawing a few hundred bills from his pocket and rolling them open. He looked up, eyes focused. Tenny glared after the threatening giant, trying to stop her trembling. The ability's draining and that encounter left her throat dry, Tenny looking over at the Dale cafe.
Finally purchasing some water, Tenny downed half the bottle in a few sips. Sighing, she looked down at her phone. She has to contact Juniper again, but discreetly.
Looking up from her phone, she saw another student at a table across from her staring at her. Tenny looked at him in confusion. She put her phone away, looking back over at the student to see if he was still staring. He is.
Not sure why he was staring, Tenny drank more of her water and finished it.
Getting up from the table, Tenny went over to a recycling bin and threw the bottle in, turning towards the exit. Two more people outside of the cafe stared at her.
Were they still concerned for her? The students gave her a warm welcome, but perhaps they thought she was still not in the best condition.
That didn't matter. Contacting Juniper did.
Withdrawing her phone, Tenny opened her call log. Pressing the number, it redialed, the ringing sounding. Tenny put the phone to her ear, looking forward.
Ten more people stared directly at Tenny, putting hundred dollar bills away. In the distance, Chess sat on a bench, smiling as he put a stick of wintergreen gum in his mouth. These students were paid to instigate.
An irate student with a messy brown bob, charcoal-colored shirt, and jeans approached Tenny.
“Who the heck do you think you are, huh?”
He grabbed Tenny's hand and held her phone, ending the call. Tenny looked at him in surprise.
“We heard what you're trying to do. That creep professor attacked Marian, and you're trying to get his charges dropped?!" the student snaps.
"What are you-” Tenny began.
The irate student knocked the phone out of Tenny's hand.
“You've got some fancy connections at GNW, is that it?”
“I heard you staged your own attack, so no one could come after you if they found out you tried to free him,” another student joined in.
“Were you his star pupil?! His class is hard. Maybe you were promised top grades?” a third student joined the fray.
Tenny tried to pick up her phone, but one student grabbed it, the others yelling at her.
The scene grew out of control, a female student in the distance walking towards them. It's Marian.
She walked up to Tenny, slapping her. Tenny held her cheek and stared at her.
“You're taking his side… You're sick," Marian said.
As she walked away, the students continued to roar at Tenny, the student who took her phone shaking it at her.
Sage approached the student and pinned his arm against his back, pushing him to the ground. He snatched the phone, but instead of handing it back to Tenny, looked at the call log. He looked at Tenny.
“Were you talking to Wenge?”
Tenny looked at him.
“No… why would I-”
Sage threw Tenny's phone to her.
“Then you can't have bad intentions.”
Sage walked past the students as if they didn't exist, some of them watching him leave, the others glaring at Tenny.
Chess glared after Sage, lifting from the bench and walking off.
Tenny walked away from the stares, heading off campus to get away from any prying eyes.
Finally finding a moment's peace, Tenny called Juniper for a third time, looking around as she put the phone to her ear.
She dialed the extension when the prompt called for it, waiting to get past the robotic voices. Finally, a click.
“Hello, you've reached the GNW law firm, Juniper Na speaking.”
“Ms. Na, it's Tenny Hale."
“Tenny! How are you? I came to visit you again, but you had already been discharged! Are you doing better?”
Tenny paused, looking around again. She confirmed she was alone, taking a deep breath.
“Is Mr. Glint in?”
“Huh? Oh, sorry. He just went out to lunch. He should be back in about forty or so minutes. And you have to schedule an appointment to meet him…”
“Where, if you don't mind me asking, did he go out to eat?” Tenny asked.
"Oh, sorry, I don't think I can give out that information.”
Tenny sat in silence for a while.
"…It's urgent, isn't it?” Juniper said.
Tenny hung up, deciding harshly not to involve Juniper. She was going to confront this issue without risking Juniper’s safety.
Juniper remained on the call.
“Tenny? Tenny?”
She looked at the phone, seeing the call ended. Juniper dragged a hand down her face in worry.
A new area erupting of beauty, high fashion stores, and pricy restaurants lay wherever one’s eyes landed.
Tenny scanned the area, seeing many business workers dining in the seats outside captivating restaurants. A few women in sundresses exited a hat shop, one running ahead of the group and twirling in her dress to the group's laughter.
Glancing at them, Tenny looked ahead. A tall, black man in a navy-colored suit entered a burgundy-colored restaurant, called 'Savoridge'.
Tenny walked past the restaurant, seeing patrons of all kinds. Business, wealthy, and a blend of the two. She looked forward again, deciding to use the forty or so minutes she had left to find Alistair Glint before work resumed.
Dining in this area with her remaining money would drain every penny. While thinking that she does want to try it someday, Tenny saw a group with silver and burgundy suits enter a restaurant half a block away.
The colors of GNW.
Entering the restaurant, called the 'Glaze Terrace', Tenny saw the suits following a waiter to a table. Her eyes scanned the restaurant, seeing no sign of Alistair Glint. Time escaping, Tenny turned to exit, bumping into the tall black man from before. He is Maverick Coates, a top prosecutor of Glint, Nexus and Wenge.
Tenny stepped out of the way as Maverick walked just a few steps past her.
“Blackwood. Thatcher. Get your rears in gear. You've got some preparation to do.”
Asher Blackwood, part of the group who just sat down, stood up with a peeved expression.
“I'm starved, Maverick. I'll be of no use to anyone if I keel over.”
“Grab a breadstick, and let's go. You're going to eat anyway. You too, Alaric.”
A bi-racial, expressive defense attorney, Alaric Thatcher, threw his bag over his shoulder in a millisecond. He smoothed down his cornrows and checked his teeth in a glass.
“That's some timing you've got there, Coates. God knows you need it in the courtroom.”
“How does doc review sound for an ideal vacation?”
Alaric ignored the comment while Asher laughed, the two making their way towards the exit, Maverick leading the way. Asher chewed on a breadstick he grabbed, stopping once they made it to where Tenny stood.
“You… you're from that tour of our firm, correct?”
"Ah, Mr. Blackwood!”
“Another ambitious freshman on the road to crushed dreams?” Alaric said.
Asher glared at Alaric.
"Is that necessary?”
“These students think that life is a movie. Best to let them know now while they're getting started. We're nearly as work-a-day as anybody else, with larger paychecks.”
“Mind-crushing seminars are not on our current itinerary. Get it moving, you two,” Maverick said.
Asher smiled at Tenny.
“Good to see you again.”
“You too, Mr. Blackwood,” Tenny replied.
Asher and Alaric exited the restaurant, Maverick staring at Tenny for a moment, exiting as well. Tenny confirmed that they, being from GNW, must be heading to Alistair Glint about now. To run into them again is more than coincidental, as if she were an obsessed fan. Tenny looked at the hat shop she passed by earlier.
Seeing as how there were no others in sight, she decided to pay the hefty, upscale price for her idea.
The sun's position shifted a minimum amount after twenty minutes. Tenny exited the hat shop, a new, black baseball cap on, hair tucked underneath.
Walking over to the Savoridge restaurant, Tenny pulled out her phone. Less than fifteen minutes to find and speak with Alistair Glint.
She stopped in front of one of the windows, assuming this was where they would be as Maverick Coates was there before arriving at the Glaze Terrace.
Tenny was right.
Alistair Glint and Maverick Coates are sitting at a table, going over forms with Asher and Alaric.
With time running out, Tenny has to get his attention somehow.
Tenny entered the restaurant, looking for nearby booths. The well-dressed host in a black, satin suit with gelled hair stared at her intently.
This wasn't going to work.
It was one of those restaurants that required a reservation or other special reason.
“Can I help you?” he asked Tenny.
Tenny looked up at the host, worrying about the limited time she had.
“Ma’am, no hats are allowed inside this establishment," the host continued.
A waiter walked by, Tenny looking at him as she took her hat off. Apologizing to the waiter inside her heart, Tenny 'dropped' the hat over the customer's order, and the waiter almost dropped the covered order.
Tenny rushed to help him, taking the hat as the plates made a large clattering sound.
The nearby customers looked at the scene, Alistair as well. Tenny made direct eye contact with him, as Alistair smiled.
“Tenny Hale, right?”
