Somewhere in the city…
“My brothers and sisters. We are close to being able to unveil our coven to the world. Just a little more time and we will be the dominant species. Humans will be cast aside and those so-called heroes will be powerless to defeat us. The Magicate will become the most powerful people on Earth!” Said a man wearing a robe and a top hat that had jewels adorned around the brim.
A group of sorcerers all began to clap and cheer as the man who was their leader finished speaking. They then dispersed, some in puffs of smoke and others flying away, and along the walls were posters of the heroes Beam and Ceros having defeated and captured one of their sister sorcerers.
Meanwhile…
“Hey, Dad. How’s work?” Kim asked.
“It’s pretty good. We are getting a lot of recruits so you’ll be seeing some heroes out on the streets with you guys.” Theo said.
“Cool! I was gonna grab some lunch if you want to come with me.” She offered.
“Sure. It’s lunchtime for me anyways.” He said.
At Calibre Sanctum, Cruz was playing some video games when Cada came to life with an alert.
“Assailant reported on Coriander Way.” Cada said.
“Do you have a description of them?” Cruz asked.
“Negative. Report indicates civilians have been injured.” Said Cada.
“Alright. I’m on my way. Send an alert to Kim.” Cruz said as he was leaving.
“Affirmative. Sending an alert now.” Cada said.
As he arrived at the scene there was a guy in a robe waving his hands and lifting objects to throw them at people. Cars, signs, manhole covers, and anything else that was in the vicinity were tossed in the air and hurled at anyone who got too close or didn’t run fast enough.
“Hey! Stop that now!” Cruz demanded.
“Hm? Oh, look who it is. Boy, am I lucky to be in the presence of Beam, the hero who took down a magic wielder like myself. However, I won’t be defeated nearly as easily.” The sorcerer said.
“We’ll see about that.” Cruz said.
The magic-user started casting spells towards Cruz but he quickly jumped into the shadows and flew out behind him. He went to throw a super punch but the sorcerer conjured a large rock from the ground and used it to slam him against the wall.
“Ugh. I think there’s dirt in my mouth.” Said Cruz as he spit.
He got back up and flew towards him as the sorcerer hurled more rocks at him. He dodged all of them in midair as his fist smashed his face and the sorcerer was knocked to the ground.
Ha! Take that!” Cruz mocked.
The sorcerer wiped his face and smirked before causing the ground around Cruz to rise and restrain his arms and legs.
“Not bad. But It looks like I’m the one who’s got the upper hand.” Said the sorcerer.
“Incoming!” Said a voice.
Cruz looked around to see where the voice came from when all of a sudden a whirlwind of paper surrounded the sorcerer and a hero who looked two-dimensional floated down and released Cruz.
“Beam, right? The name’s Sheet Shifter. Manipulator of paper. Stand back man.” Said Sheet Shifter.
The whirlwind of paper began to slice the sorcerer giving him papercuts but the sorcerer cast a water spell and dowsed the paper causing them to fall to the ground.
“Dang it.” Sheet Shifter said, defeated.
“I gotchu bro!” Said a female voice.
Just then a series of digital blocks that formed an L shape hurled through the sky and smacked into the sorcerer before another block slammed into the fist block creating a line that then disappeared and was replaced by a score. Sliding down on a digitized path of ones and zeroes was a girl wearing a hoodie sipping a soda.
“Hey. What's up? I'll handle this guy.” The girl said.
“Who are you?” Cruz asked.
“Hm? Oh, I'm Digi-Girl. You can just call me Digi. Stand back.” Digi said.
She took another sip of her soda before making a pixelated gun appear in her hands as she blasted the sorcerer. He fell flat on the ground and then she talked into an earpiece telling the person on the other end that she got the sorcerer.
Just then, a voice from behind Cruz said “Copy that.”
Theo and Kim walked up as Kim cuffed the sorcerer and led him to a car.
“Dad? What in the world is going on?” Cruz asked.
“Well, we got your call and figured you could use a bit of help. These guys are new to the Hero Society and need some experience. I hope they didn't steal your thunder or anything.” Theo said being cheeky.
“Ah, I see. No worries, I was totally not able to defeat him myself so I'm glad I had reinforcements.” Said Cruz.
“Hey, Cruz! Sorry we weren't here sooner.” Kim said.
“Hey, I'm just glad you showed up.” Said Cruz as he wiped some dirt off his suit.
“C'mon, Dad said there's a guy at the Society that can help us to interrogate the enemy. Hopefully, we can get some answers as to where these magic users are coming from.” Said Kim.
Sheet Shifter and Digi-Girl left to go patrol the city while Theo, Kim, and Cruz took the sorcerer back to the Hero Society. Theo had him put in a room while he contacted someone to help interrogate him. After a little while, a guy walked into the Society and greeted Theo.
“Guys, meet Cognitom.” Theo said.
Hello. Yes, I am Cognitom. As you might guess, I can read minds but only once a week. Fortunately for you, I am willing to use up my powers for this week to help you. No need to thank me. Just let me do my job and I'll get out of your hair.” Said Cognitom in a bored voice.
Cruz and Kim looked at each other and then shrugged as Cognitom walked into the room where the sorcerer was being held.
Theo walked in after him and said, “I need to know where he got his magic from and if there are any others that are coming.”
Cognitom nodded and held his fingers on the sorcerer's forehead. His brow furrowed as his focus intensified and he entered his mind.
“Are you getting anything?” Theo asked.
“I see other magic users and one of them appears to be their leader.” He told him.
“What about their powers?” Asked Theo.
He concentrated harder and said “I'm trying to see but it's like there's nothing there. I don't think this guy has any knowledge of how he got his abilities.” Cognitom said.
The tension in his face softened as he took his fingers off of the sorcerer's head and opened his eyes.
“Sorry, that's all I've got.” He said as he turned to Theo.
“You did good. I'll give you a call if we need you again.” Theo said.
After Cognitom left, Theo headed back to his office and made a phone call.
“Hey, have you found any leads?” Tekashi asked on the other end.
“Yeah. I'm putting together a team and I want you to lead it.” Theo said.
“Wow, I'm honored. I'll get ready and head down to the Society then.” Said Tekashi before hanging up the phone.
After telling his wife Maeda where he was going, Tekashi combed his hair up, grabbed a purple jacket, put on some shades, and swiftly made his way to the Hero Society.
“Hi there! How can I help you?” Asked the receptionist.
Tekashi pulled down his shades and the receptionist gasped.
“Mr. Tekashi! I'm so sorry for not recognizing you. Go right in.” The receptionist said.
As Tekashi met with Theo he was led to the auditorium where several heroes were waiting. Theo ushered Tekashi onto the stage and handed him a microphone.
Hello everyone. Thank you for coming. As you know, we have a problem on the rise. Director Theo has selected you to be on my team to put a stop to these magic users. I know you all are amazing so let’s do our best and kick some butt. Who’s with me?!” Tekashi said.
The heroes cheered and Tekashi said, “Alright, let’s do this.”
