Tenny and her friends knew of the GNW Partners' names but not all of their faces. But from Wenge's distinguished suit, they assumed he was a lawyer. Wenge stared down at the group as if they were a different species.
“Sorry about that, sir-” Blake began.
“It's quite fine. I assume one of your parents works here?" Wenge asked.
“Oh, uh, we're from Vellichor-” Mark said.
“Ah, yes. I see the emblems on your bags now. I wish they would have made them another color.”
“Oh, is it your alma mater as well? A lot of people here sure went to Vellichor-”
Blake elbowed Mark.
“Don't be so casual! Have some respect.”
“Sorry! Yeesh."
Wenge laughed, now finding the encounter entertaining.
“That's a helpful tip. I don't mind it, just this once, but that is something to carry with you to the courts. It's always something to have freshmen visit my firm.”
"Your… firm, sir?”
“Oh, I apologize. Nearly everyone here knows me, so it's not too often that I have to introduce myself. Titus Wenge, partner of Glint, Nexus, and Wenge.”
The group fell into shock, two of them never imagining coming in contact with an actual partner. However, Tenny is still taken by surprise.
"Wow! N-nice to meet you, sir!” Blake exclaimed.
“This is the best day of my life!” Mark joined in.
Wenge laughed.
"A pleasure.”
“I'm Blake Dayton, this is Mark Avery, and that's Tenny Hale!”
Tenny looked up at Wenge in shock, still not over the fact that she had now met two partners.
“I-it's nice to meet you.”
Wenge looked at Tenny, took a moment, and then looked back at Mark.
“She's a quiet one, isn't she?”
“She's just surprised to meet you! As we all are.”
“When it comes to cases, stick to that mentality. It's a good instinct for a lawyer to keep valuable information to himself or herself before its time.”
Tenny nodded, Wenge looking back at Blake and Mark.
“Well, I hope you enjoyed it here. I have to get a meeting. Thank you for visiting GNW.”
Wenge waved to the freshmen, walking down the hall where the lawyers' offices are, heading in the same direction Quinton and Juniper went down.
Blake and Mark were practically jumping. Visiting GNW, getting a tour, meeting a lawyer and a partner? To them, it was on the level of visiting an amusement park every day for a month.
Blake pressed the down button for the elevator, finger trembling with excitement.
“I mean, did that seriously just happen?!”
“No one touch me. I don't want to wake up,” Mark said.
Blake looked at Tenny.
“Tenny, thank you so much for letting us come with you!”
Tenny smiled at the two.
“It's hard to take everything in."
“You were, uh, kinda quiet back there. You alright?” Mark asked.
Tenny looked at Mark, the elevator arriving.
“Yeah, I'm fine. It's just that after meeting Mr. Glint, I don't feel like I could be as surprised as you two; that's all. Yesterday, I was extremely surprised to see a partner down at a precinct.”
The three entered the elevator, Blake pressing for the lobby.
“So the thrill wore off?” Blake asked.
“Not exactly. A lot of what happened today, especially meeting Mr. Wenge, that's very shocking. If it weren't for that emergency meeting, we probably would've never got to see him. All of these partner encounters are purely by chance.”
"True! Still, I wonder what the meeting is about…” Mark said.
“It'll be fun to imagine it because that's as far as we're going to get to that case,” Blake stated.
The elevator doors opened, and the three freshmen exited, walking through the lobby.
Blake withdrew his phone, the screen lighting up with the time.
“It's 1:10 pm. We have an hour and fifty minutes before afternoon classes.”
“That's a lot of time. Wanna grab a bite? They have to have good restaurants near a firm like this,” Mark said.
Blake and Tenny nodded, following Mark out of the building.
The group entered ‘Sea Paradise’. A sophisticated, aesthetic seafood restaurant with large flat screen televisions that had an adequate amount of people, being typical for this time of day. Tenny, Blake and Mark were enjoying their orders at a table, Tenny sitting directly apart from the two.
Blake put his fork down, typing away on his phone that was on the table. Mark smiled.
“Tweeting about your day?”
“Texting my father the photos... and about my day."
“I gotta do the same later. I'm still trying to process all of what happened."
“Exactly how I felt yesterday. Kinda jealous that you guys got the full surprise treatment,” Tenny said.
Mark and Blake laughed, as breaking news flashed on the televisions. Tenny looked up at the television in her direction. The volume is very low, but the captions scroll across the screen. Alistair Glint appeared, walking to the center of the filming. The captions popped up as soon as he spoke them.
[LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS ARE CURRENTLY INVESTIGATING THE ABDUCTION AND ATTEMPTED MURDER OF A TWELVE-YEAR-OLD FEMALE. A SUSPECT HAS BEEN APPREHENDED AND IS CURRENTLY IN CUSTODY. MAKE NO MISTAKE, CHARGES WILL BE BROUGHT AGAINST THESE INHUMANE ACTS-]
Tenny read the captions as fast as she could.
“Blake, Mark…"
The two looked up from their meals at her, Tenny pointing to the televisions behind her for them to watch.
"Alistair Glint.”
"The head of Glint, Nexus, and Wenge?!” Mark exclaimed.
“Shhh!” Blake replied.
Blake tried to read the captions, as did Mark. They were now up to date as the reporter repeated the situation and updates.
“That's what that meeting has to be about,” Tenny said.
“What else could it be at this point? This is national news,” Blake replied.
“A super large case! GNW has to be the best pick for it,” Mark said.
Tenny looked down from the television, withdrawing her phone. She went onto social media, seeing that the story was trending number one. The area? The name of the trend? Fallow.
Tenny sat on her bed in a lilac sleep shirt and pants, several assignment sheets lying over her desk. She undid her pigtails, feeling the freedom of unbound hair. Her phone laid atop the stack, the screen displaying a text to her mother, full of photos from today. They are full of happy responses from her, each with a thumbs-up stamp from Tenny.
Rubbing her eyes, Tenny went back to her laptop, using a loose sheet next to her to assist with one of her first reading materials. Texts from Mark shook her phone, Tenny wondering if she regrets giving him her contact info this evening. It turned out to be a group chat, as Blake was responding to Mark. He was probably the only friend she did not regret sharing her contact info with.
Tenny lifted her phone, reading the group chat texts.
[M: You guys have to see this! I was laughing so hard that I got kicked out of the library.
B: That's to be expected.
B: Okay, that was actually good. Gotta get back to the books, though.]
Tenny is somewhat curious, tapping the video Mark put in the group chat. An adorable bird bobbed up and down on a counter, actually managing to get a laugh out of Tenny. Apprehensive, she typed in the chat.
[T: Lol]
Even virtually, Tenny was not much of a conversationalist. Somehow, though, she has friends without saying much. Tenny reviewed that fact, a little happy that it became this situation, liking to talk to the two. Even Mark.
The hours passed, Tenny sitting at her desk and pushing hair strands back from her forehead while she read extensive cases from one of her textbooks. Her dorm room opened. A slim, tall, caramel-skinned male with brunette cornrows in dark clothes entering. He placed his messenger bag on his bed, taking off his jacket. This is Tenny's stoic roommate, Sage Ultren.
Not closing the door, the tall teen looked over at Tenny for a brief moment. He withdrew some work, placing it on his desk.
“Didn't see you at the parties tonight.”
Tenny looked back at Sage, turning back around.
“Not really my scene. I didn't think it'd be yours either.”
Sage smirked, emptying the rest of his bag on his desk.
“Some sacrifices must be made if I want to establish connections. Tried the whole solo thing before in high school. No one knew I existed. It'd be good to do the same if you want to prosper in this field."
Tenny knew about the competitiveness in this school and how some students may try to turn friends against each other. Not really knowing Sage that well, Tenny decided to assume he may be one of those students, just to be on the safe side.
“Sure.”
Sage let out a snicker, pushing the windows' curtains to the sides.
“With all the questions you bombard the professors with, I'm surprised you're not the least bit interested in the campus' newest case.”
Tenny looked at Sage in confusion. Sage smirked.
"Looks like you're the only one on this floor who didn't hear. At least it's reassuring to know you don't know everything.”
“What happened?”
Sage gestured outside the dorm door.
“Better yet, there's more evidence.”
Sage tapped the window twice. Several police cars with bright sirens sat in front of the dormitory. Tenny looked outside the window briefly, turning and going into the hallway.
A girl with short, brunette hair sobbed against her friend, who comforted her. Several students were in the halls, staring at the scene. Sage exited the hall after Tenny, who turned to him.
“What happened?" Tenny asked.
“Go interview the source."
“I couldn't do that…”
“Why not? They are.”
Several students approached the girl in concern. They ask what she's been through, the girl's friend trying to brush them off. The girl tells her friend it's okay, telling the occurrence.
“You need a backbone for the occupation you're aiming for. If you can't even ask a basic question, guess this is the wrong place for you."
Sage pushed past Tenny, going back into their room and closing the door. Tenny walked towards the girl, who was spilling the whole story.
“A-and then… h-he… the door was locked, I locked it. I was reviewing the case assignment all day yesterday. I just wanted to close my eyes for thirty minutes. Then, I'm being grabbed and tossed, and-”
The girl grabbed her shoulder in pain, and her friend helped her stand. Once she removed her hand, a large, purple bruise covered her collarbone.
The group was in shock, Tenny's eyes also growing in surprise.
“I don't even know the freak! I locked the door. I did- what the heck, THAT'S HIM!”
The girl pointed at a hooded figure down the hall, the entire group of spectators turning their heads to him as he paused, running off.
