Before exiting the precinct, Tenny decided she needed to take a breath. The ability's drawbacks can be pretty exhausting, especially when excessive.
She withdrew the tissue from before, dabbing it on the inside of her bottom lip. Her eyes wandered while she pressed down on all corners of her mouth. In the distance, an older blonde man, too well-dressed in a silver suit, smiled at the receptionist, leaving a gold-trimmed box of assorted chocolates on her desk. A crowd of cops were just feet behind him, smiling and waving as they swarmed the chocolates when the man departed from the desk.
Before the man started down the hallway, the sullen Tenny, continuously dabbing at her bloodied lip, had him concerned.
He approached Tenny, pausing his footsteps.
It's Alistair Glint, the top attorney in Fallow and the seventeenth-best Prosecutor in the state of New York.
"Is someone currently identifying your attacker?”
Tenny was sent back to reality by his voice. Her eyes darted to the man for a brief second, and she faced forward again.
“I wasn't attacked.”
“Forgive me, I assumed too soon. A personal injury then, I suppose?”
“Injury?"
Blankly dabbing her lip for some time, Tenny forgot that it may appear as a wound to other people.
“Ah, no, this is-”
She made complete eye contact with Alistair, fully recognizing him now.
This was the big-shot attorney that the professors at Vellichor could not stop referencing. What was such a standout doing in a sullen land?
Alistair has seen that look of recognition too many times to count during his career.
“It looks like you know who I am. Let me guess. Vellichor? Nalauin?”
“A freshman at Vellichor. I did apply to Nalauin as well, though. And Zeitgaine.”
“Ah, I see. Vellichor's my alma mater, and I-”
Alistair laughed for a moment, to Tenny's confusion. He stared straight at Tenny's college's messenger bag.
“That Vellichor bag. It's been through so many design revisions that I didn't recognize it. Did you know that Nathaniel Nexus helped design the 2005 model?”
“Of Glint, Nexus, and Wenge?"
"That's right. Fun fact. His design lasted four and a half years. The longest of any of the revisions.”
Tenny smiled, learning a lot of new information in the past two minutes. Alistair sat down on the edge of the bench.
“I came to pay a visit to law enforcement today. They're having a conference soon, and I'm helping to arrange the right destination. Currently, I'm looking for interns. There's no limit on slots, but I'm trying to find who's truly interested. Are you one of those?”
Tenny lowered her hand, holding the tissue down at the speed of light.
“It'd be an honor!”
Alistair smiled at the eager freshman.
“I'll see what I can do.”
He held out his hand for a handshake to a reluctant Tenny.
"I would… but, uh…”
“The blood, huh?”
“Yeah… It's not a big injury, more of an accident.”
Tenny stood, grasping the tissue tightly.
"But yes. I am interested in the internship."
“Tenny Hale?” The cop from the lineup room began while approaching her, counting several bills.
“We would like to thank you for your assistance in identifying the culprit. The reward money of five grand was split between you and the other two witnesses.”
The cop handed Tenny one grand.
“You weren't able to make a verbal identification, but your reaction was backed by the verbal identifications of the other two witnesses. Thank you for your participation.”
“Five grand, huh? He must have quite a rap sheet.”
“That information is confidential, Mr. Glint, but you're in the right territory. Have a good day, folks.”
The cop began walking back down the hall, Tenny in shock that she had even gotten an ounce of the reward money.
"Well, I'll be. A freshman at Vellichor, catching a criminal on her first day? That's exactly what Glint, Nexus, and Wenge seek.”
Alistair took out a business card and handed it to Tenny.
“Let us know when you have free time. If I'm not in the office, one of our assistants would love to give a tour of the firm. It might give you some insight into a future career.”
Tenny put the tissue in her pocket, taking the card. This was too much for her to process.
“Thank you very much.”
Alistair looked over at the cops near reception, waving at them. The cops happily waved back as he left. Tenny watched him exit through the revolving doors, her eyes returning to the business card in her hand. Did this really just happen?
The next morning's course was Capital Punishment, which was what it felt like for the students who partied the night before. Tenny typed notes while Mark nibbled on the edge of a highlighter he had out.
The sun roasted the tables, which was one way to keep the students awake. The teacher lectured the silent class while only excitement ran through Tenny's veins. The opportunity to tour Glint, Nexus, and Wenge was more than enough to keep her awake—that, and the response sent at night from her mom. She loved the pictures, and Tenny loved this college.
The youthful-faced yet aged flaxen-haired bespectacled professor, Professor Bolt Thuron, whose entire name was sprawled out on a whiteboard, smacked the large projection screen with his pointer stick, waking up the few who were dozing off.
“There are no beds located in this class. And they are not located in any courtrooms. If you will notice, no professional setting has a bed in its vicinity. Keep that in mind, or the beds in your homes will be the only ones to take you!”
Some students began to laugh, including a smirk from Tenny. She started categorizing her notes while Professor Thuron continued to talk, wanting to stay organized from day one. More than anyone, she has to impress herself.
Tenny sat at a table with a resting Blake, scrolling through her phone. In the distance, Mark came with a tray full of breakfast items, emitting a groan from Tenny.
“Why does everyone do that when I get near them?”
“As long as you don't quiz me anymore, I'll try my best to keep it down.”
“You promise?”
Tenny crossed her fingers while Mark looked down at the sleeping Blake, his eyes going back to Tenny.
“What's with him?”
“Who knows.”
Blake sat up, rubbing his eye with his right index finger.
“I pulled an all-nighter.”
“Partying?”
“Trying to impress the professors, huh.”
“You got it."
“Been there. You should find a way to manage it, especially on the first day. If you crash after day one, it's all downhill on how they see you.”
“I tried my best not to fall asleep in class, and I did it. I'm not sure if I can get through the rest of the day, though.
“Coffee is your best friend, especially in a place like this.”
Mark slid his iced coffee can to Blake, who pushed it back lightly.
“Not one for it or energy drinks.”
Tenny awakened in pure excitement and wonders if that's what Blake needs.
“We don't have classes until three, and it's noon now,” Tenny began.
She stood up from the table.
“I'm not sure if I'm allowed to bring anyone, but want to come tour a firm? A look into the future should keep your eyes wide open.”
“I've got nothing to lose."
“Trust me. From a tour like this, you've got everything to gain.”
The trio of friends get off of a bus, the firm front and center. Tenny looked at Mark, then back to Blake. She pointed at Mark.
“Why did we bring him?"
“I'm interested in this place too, you know! It's all my mother ever talks about.”
“I can't believe I'm even standing in front of it.”
Tenny smiled, withdrawing the business card and walking ahead.
Several employees walked in and out of the building, each brimming with professionalism. By the entrance, a young beauty of Asian descent was on her phone, fingers tapping at the speed of light. She is Juniper Na, an assistant to Nathaniel Nexus, who is currently taking a break from GNW.
Two security guards across from her spotted the trio of freshmen. They walked to the center of the entrance, the freshmen stopping in their tracks.
“How may we help you?"
“Oh, my name is Tenny Hale. I had a chance to meet Mr. Glint at a precinct yesterday after picking someone out of a lineup. He gave me this.”
Tenny lifted the shining, oak-colored business plastered with Alistair Glint's information. The guard took the card, confirming its authenticity, and handed it back.
"And why are you here?”
"He said that I was welcome to a tour of the firm when I had free time. I don't know if I was allowed to bring anyone, but-”
“Mr. Glint said that?” Juniper said, walking towards the group of freshmen and putting her phone away.
“Yes, miss. He did.”
Juniper pulled her cascading jet-black ponytail from her back and over her right shoulder.
“I mean, it certainly sounds like him. Unfortunately, he just stepped out for a couple of hours. Has business elsewhere for the rest of the day. Are you guys students?”
“Yes, We're freshmen at Vellichor University.”
“Ah! Mr. Glint's alma mater.”
She looked at the security guards for a second, looking back to the freshmen.
“When are you guys expected back? Any evening classes today?”
“Yes, miss. Around three o’clock."
Juniper put a hand to her chin in thought. The guards and freshmen waited in anticipation.
“That's plenty of time. But we have a very busy day today, so the tour will have to be a bit shorter than usual. Come on in!”
The security guards returned to their positions. Juniper nodded to the guards while leading the freshmen in.
