The origin story of Nina is told in the Audio Drama 'Blood Upon a Time' which is available all over the place now. In it, we learn that Nina was born a -loooooong- time ago. And while Esther's no spring chicken, she's staying modern while her long time lover has not.
So here, we get a moment of Nina seeing something at a movie theater for the first time since 1931. Clearly, this lady doesn't get out to that type of thing very much. Also, Esther's not had the chance to be with her during much of the 1900s. She had her own problems to deal with.
But here, together, they're exploring some entertainment available in the modern day. A point Ash began in the second season of Malevolence.
