As Aster was sleeping, the bus abruptly stopped, causing everyone to bounce forward.
"OUCH! What the fuck??" he yelled, which got him a few stares from his peers, making his hands tremble for unknown reasons.
Aster tried to give them an intimidating look so they could just fuck off, but it didn't work; all he did was look insane.
He was aware there was nothing else he could do, first impression ruined. So, his eyes averted from the people to the glass window next to him because he just couldn't handle their looks anymore. He tried to take in as much of the scenery as he could, but there was no camp in sight. "I'm guessing traffic," he guessed quietly to himself.
Aster wasn't exactly keen on anything, in fact, he hated most stuff, especially things that take great effort, but taking road trips wasn't one of them. In fact, he found it quite relaxing to be in a vehicle, looking through the window and looking at things he has never seen before. But at some times it gets boring, this was the time. He absolutely had no idea what to do except maybe; listening to the chatter the front seaters created. Which hasn't died, after what, 3 hours, 4 hours, Aster wasn't sure and he is incapable of checking because his phone was at 0%. Certainly from the ear-blasting music that was left playing.
Anyways, he tried to listen to the chatter but there was just too much of it. All he had heard was some name,"Sam", To be specific.
And guess what guys, he decided to play guess who to escape his painful boredom.
"Sam..sam, who could that be." He looked around the bus carefully. The name sam didn't really even give him any hints, it really can be a girls OR a boys name. And, before making his final guess boom the driver stops and yells
"WE ARE HERE, KIDS!" Hearing that made the young boy so relieved he can finally go to his cabin and isolate himself as much as he could.
"Thank god." He thanked the lords within his brain because he didn't have to be confined in this bus any longer.
A few mintues later.
Aster got off almost last since he waited till everyome got out, no point in pushing thru.
Everyone gathered up close to a boy around his age, probably one or two years older than him.
"As most of you know, im Sam Mackenzie. Im going to be your leader!" The guy said ethuausaitically.
"Oh thats..Sam."
Aster turned his head to the closest person to him and asked "Isnt he a little young to be, you know, Camp leader. Dont you have to be twenty or whatever."
The stranger transfered their attention from Sam to him. " Oh? You dont know him , do you? Im surpised honestly, most people know him hes like a 'woah huge celebirty' In town! "
"Get to the point please." Aster was trying to be nice for once but his tone mightve came off as cold.
"Oh, he's basically a camp leader in training he's just meant to help the actual Camp leader." She returned her eyes back to him.
"Nice." He replied back lost in thought.
"Weird dude , why, i dont know but man is he weird, gives me the chills for no reason." He thought to himself once again.
"As the leader i would love to hear you all introduce yourselves so i can know all of you better, since you guys all look like wonderful people" He gives Aster and his campmates a smile.
"Lets…first start with you." He points at a guy with braces and glasses.
"Hello everybody! My name is Milan." He said a little nervously which Sam immedialty picked up on.
"Awh you dont have to be nervouse we arent going to hurt you , right guys." Everyone noded except a few guys including Aster.
If he doesnt go to his cabin soon he really might as well hurt somebody, ugh.
10 minutes later, most of the people had introduced themselves except for about six people.
"Now, how about we go with you! The one with the messy hair, by the way, it looks nice on you," Sam complimented Aster.
"Oh, well thank you, I've done it myself! Wow, you're so nice," he smiled egotistically.
Wait. SHIT. YOU NINCOMPOOP!
"You're not supposed to give in to this, dude. I know damn well he wasn't genuine, he's not wrong though, I guess."
It was truly hard for Aster not to like someone after having his ego boosted so nicely, but he knew something was off with this dude. HE WAS TOO NICE! OBNOXIOUSLY NICE! FUCKING PISSED HIM OFF.
"Uhm... hello?" The leader's worried tone snapped Aster out of it. "Uh, yes?"
"What is your name, buddy?" Sam repeated the question a second time, this time where Aster could actually hear it. "Aster." He tried to act as cold and boring as possible to get this stupid guy off his ass.
"Oh! That's a pretty unique name. Do you know what the meaning behind it is?" He seemed genuinely interested, but Aster's mind could not accept that. "Don't really know; I think it's some kind of flower. Look it up." The younger guy said, not making any eye contact with Sam.
From the corner of his eye, he could see his leader's eyes twitch a little, or maybe it was his imagination. Even so, it was very amusing for Aster.
After he was done with the other five people, he began introducing himself. "As you already know, my name is Sam, Sam Mackenzie, and I'm going to be your team leader. Buttt, I don't want you guys to see me as just that; I also want to be seen as a friend who you guys can rely on."
"Corny," Aster faked a cough, trying to hide the fact that he was the one who said that; it worked, at least on Sam's end, but the people around him gave him a few side-eyes.
"OH! I almost forgot, I need to read the list of assigned cabins," Sam said as he shoved his hand deep in his backpack to find the paper. "Here it is!"
"Okay, first we have..." Aster zoned out for most of it because he was just so bored; god, he was never this bored even at home. He only started paying attention to what the camp leader was saying when he heard his name.
"The cabin next to the shower rooms is assigned to; Aster and-" He dashed to his cabin before he could hear with whom he has to spend the next few months.
The inside of the cabin was decent, not as good as his room but manageable. And obviously, as any other camp has bunk beds so does this one, oh boy, he's definitely sleeping on top.
This reminds him of the time he and his brother Taji had to share a room with each other for around 4 years, and there was not enough space for two beds so the ultimate solution for their parents was to get them a bunk bed. Taji marked the top bunk as his territory while he had to be stuck with the bottom, and every damn morning he would hit his head. Huh, maybe that's why he's so dumb academically now, we figured it out!
He marked the top bunk as his by throwing his duffel bag on the sheets and then sitting on the bottom one to just give his legs a little rest cause he was aware they're probably going to make him do some mindless activity, this is a camp after all.
Feeling more relaxed he decided to go to the toilet, but just as the door opened where he could see almost everything, he saw a dude hanging from the tiny little bathroom window.
"AHHHHH! WHO IN THE NAME OF JESUS ARE YOU?" Aster screams out, sounding just like a girl.
The dude who is still hanging for dear life responds with "Shh, you're going to get us in trouble for being so loud!"
"JUST SO YOU KNOW I CAN FIGHT." The scared boy had taken a fight stance, ignoring the other person's words.
"Please just help me ou-" The window guy says just before his ass could slam on the floor. "Ugh... whatever, listen, I wasn't intruding or anything, but you look like a pretty radical guy, so there was a chance if YOU WEREN'T MY ROOMMATE."
"Oh!" Aster exclaimed in an embarrassed yet flattered way."So why were you hanging on the window?" "
"Was trying to close it, but as you can see as much as i am tall the window is like twice my height, so i ended up hanging on it." The stranger giggled.
Aster had came up with yet another question, "How'd you get here?"
The guy went out and reached his neck to scratch it. "Well, my assigned cabin was read before yours, and overall, the people they put me with were trash, and I asked to switch, and well you ended up being the only one without any roommates until… now, flower boy!"
Aster sighs. "Seriously, flower boy? Where did that even come from?"
His roommate gave him a silly look, "Aster right, you yourself said your name meant like a flower or something like that."
"Yes, but never call me that fuckwart." Aster threatened him but he tried to keep himself at least a bit likable "JOKE , that was a joke, anyways what about you? What is YOUR name?"
"Barret. Nice to meet you." He shakes Aster's hand.
