Alright, it came across the wrong way. Skylar definitely can't ask any questions he wants to, either, because that would just make Ashton suspicious of him again. Maybe he should just come up with something generic? Instead of asking a bunch of loaded questions, like he wants to?
"I don't know... what's your middle name?"
Skylar finishes putting the jelly on the toast, and turns around, to find Ashton standing in the middle of the kitchen with his arms crossed. He looks displeased.
"...Rio," he answers hesitantly. Skylar pauses. Ashton Rio Rivera. That's kind of a cool name, actually. Hang on a second...
"Wait, don't Rio and Rivera both mean river?" Skylar asks, because his Spanish knowledge is limited, but he's pretty sure that's the case. Ashton purses his lips, visibly displeased with the turn the conversation has taken.
"Yes."
"What about Ashton? What does that mean?"
Ashton sighs, starting to walk towards him. Skylar tries not to feel nervous, instead focusing on eating his toast and interrogating Ash.
"I don't know. Trees or something."
"A man of nature."
"Okay, this is why I don't tell you shit." Ashton snaps, but he doesn't appear to actually be upset at all. Skylar is finding the conversation to be quite entertaining. It's rare that he gets opportunities to tease this guy. It's usually the other way around. Unfortunately, Ashton turns the conversation back on him with ease.
"Did you put jelly on both sides of your toast?"
Skylar blinks at him, glancing down at his toast and then back up at Ashton. Yes, he does in fact put his jelly on both sides of his toast. He is also aware that is not a common thing, but it's surely not a crazy enough occurrence that Ashton needs to point it out.
"Yes."
"That's unhealthy."
Ashton is now right in front of Skylar, a hand resting on either side of him on the counter. Skylar looks up at him, finishing his piece of toast and taking a sip from a water bottle he also stole from the fridge earlier. He just holds the water bottle in his hand when he's done, unsure what to do. He can't read the look on Ashton's face, but the guy is way too close to be friendly. Skylar begins to grow nervous for a whole new reason.
"Ashton."
"Hm?"
Ashton is getting closer to him. He's leaning down a lot, face only a few inches from Skylar's before he knows it. Skylar's mind kind of blanks out for a moment, and as per usual when they're this close, his eyes wander down to Ashton's lips. Oh god. He probably should've just skipped breakfast today. Let himself starve. Avoided this whole thing entirely.
"You're... kinda..." Skylar trails off, and Ashton tilts his head. Skylar gulps, trying to clear his mind and focus on the task at hand. Except, what was the task at hand again? Eat his toast? His toast is out of reach, now.
Okay, Skylar needs to end this. He cannot keep letting this guy get to him. "Close."
Skylar is not lying. Ashton is very close to him right now. At first Skylar assumes it's because the guy is trying to initiate something. Well... more like he's trying to get Skylar to initiate something. Skylar can't let that happen. However, then Ashton speaks, and it becomes apparent that that isn't quite the case.
"You don't have to worry," Ashton says, and his voice is serious. "About me being with anyone else. Okay?"
Alright, top ten ways to get Skylar to snap the fuck out of it.
Skylar tenses, before grabbing Ashton's wrist and moving it so he can put some distance between them instead of being trapped against the counter. He takes a few steps back, completely forgetting his toast and glaring at the guy. What the hell did he just say?
"Why the hell would I worry about that?" Skylar asks him, eyes narrowed and face growing warm. He's not even sure what he's feeling right now, all he knows is that it's a lot. What did Ashton mean by that?
"You don't have to. That's what I just said." Ashton replies, and Skylar can't tell if he's misunderstanding the question on purpose or not.
"Fuck who you want," Skylar snaps at him, ignoring the strange feeling just the thought of that causes within himself. What the fuck is going on? Why is Ash acting like they're exclusive or something? Is Skylar misunderstanding this? God, this morning has been a rollercoaster.
They are not in some sort of relationship, and never will be. No way. Ashton could do so much better, and Skylar doesn't want to ever be in a relationship at all. Never. He doesn't want to put someone through that. He has too many problems—his addiction, constantly being injured, his permanent shitty mood—and he just wouldn't wish it upon anyone to put up with that.
Also, he doesn't want to be in a relationship with Ashton to begin with. Ashton? His boyfriend? Yeah, he has no desire for that. Obviously. Of course. Why would he? No thanks. Gross. Ew.
"I have," Ashton replies, quirking an eyebrow. Skylar does not understand these implications. Okay, that's a lie, he kind of does. Like, just now, Ashton was 100% referencing The Event.
"Whatever," Skylar says, realizing that he just needs to get the hell out of here. It's time to go steal drugs. Honestly, anything is better than the weird feelings the turn in the conversation is causing within himself. He doesn't tell Ashton he's leaving, or where he's going. He doesn't even put shoes on or finish his toast.
Skylar just spins on his heel and walks out the front door, much like the mysterious woman from earlier.
