“Welcome, good morning,” I smiled, greeting a pair of older folks. “Let me know if you need any assistance.”
“Excuse me,” someone startled me; I turned, staring at someone about the same age as me. “Do you sell e-books here?”
“Uh?” I blinked a few times. That is the most stupid question ever! ...Take a breath, remember, you need to help out as much as possible- “No.” I stated.
“Damn it.” they sighed sharply. “What do you sell then?”
“Books...?” I gestured around.
“That’s it?” they pressed.
“Feel free to look around and see if anything is to your... specific taste.” I forced myself to smile. “If you don’t see it here, then we don’t have it.”
“Oh, what about online textbooks? For the university down the way-” I cut them off harshly.
“We do not sell anything online or electronic. We sell literal books. If you are not looking for a book in real life, consider looking elsewhere.” I hissed.
“Would your manager know if you sold e-books?” they shrugged.
“For the last time, we sell books. Nothing more. Nothing less.” I grit my teeth. “And I'm the only one working.”
“Ugh, fine,” they turned around, starting to the door. “What about audio books-?”
“Get out!” I snapped.
“Sorry young man,” the older man tapped my shoulder. “Young kids nowadays don’t appreciate books like they used too...”
“Ah,” I took a deep breath. “Yes, I've noticed. Have you found everything alright, sir?”
“Very,” he nodded. “We’d like to get these please.”
“Alright, follow me to the counter.” I smiled softly. “...That comes to $60 even. How would you like to pay?”
“Here you go son,” he handed me a hundred-dollar bill. “Keep the change, yeah?” he smiled.
“Ar-are you sure?” I stammered.
“Yeah. I think we’ll be coming here a lot more.” he held the older woman’s hand. “She’s def, so we read together.”
“Oh, well, let me see here...” I paused for a moment. [Thank you, ma’am.] I signed brokenly; I had learned back in grade school, a few of my classmates, including me, were disabled and spokespeople for our disabilities.
[Thank you,] the older woman signed back quickly; I was only able to catch the first part.
