“I’ve got to get going.” I stated.
“Ok, see you on Monday.” she smiled, waving as she turned back to find her second class.
My name... it’s not mine...
“Sir? Name for your order?” I blinked a few times; I stood in a small coffee shop, in front of the ordering counter. “Sir?”
“Ah- sorry.” I shook my head. “H-y-s.”
“Ok then.” the worker wrote on a cup. “We’ll call you when it’s done, sir.” they smiled smally.
I took my classes at 4 p.m., so the evenings were pretty quiet, and my classes small. I hated people and being around them, so I tried to avoid them as much as possible, even if that meant becoming a night owl. I just preferred my own company and the company of animals and nature rather than play a gamble with people.
“Highs? Ice water, and pumpkin spice coffee?” someone announced.
“Mhm.” I walked up to the counter, nodding my thanks as I took both drinks, walking towards the door. “Wait-” I blinked a few times. “I didn’t ask for a pumpkin... ah never mind. Too much talking already...” I grumbled, walking out.
Any spare time I had was put into working at this old and quaint bookshop, run by a kind old woman maned Delilah; I didn’t know how old she was or much about her for that matter, but she gave my work, a place to stay, and on top of that, she also pays me. I didn’t question her too much, only her questionable taste in partners for me; she likes to play matchmaker.
“You better have my coffee young man!” I was startled as I walked into the main entrance to the small bookshop I both worked at and lived above.
“Ah, yes, they gave me pumpkin-” i was cut off.
“And you were to much of a wuss to ask them to remake it, right!?” she laughed. “Give it here,” I handed the hot drink to her gently. “Grandmama needs caffeine~!” she announced.
“Ma’am... drinking coffee this late...?” I sighed, walking off; there was a small closet that served as my employee locker; I set my school bag in there and grabbed my blank nametag. “By the way-"
“Oh!" The doors rang as someone entered. “My boys are here!” Delilah stepped down from her stool behind the register, walking past me. “I trust you to take care of the shop ‘til I get back, ok?” she greeted the two men. “My grandson is finally getting' married!”
“Uh-? Wh-when will you be back, ma’am?” I stammered. “This is so short notice.”
“Eh, if I survive the flights, I'll be back next weekend!” Delilah grinned.
“Be- be safe, ma’am!” I was cut off, the door swinging closed behind her and her grandsons. “I’m gonna set this whole place on fire...” I groaned.
