Adelmo's eyes widened as he glanced down at the paper in his hands. The name written on it was none other than Alexandru, his grandfather's name. A surge of curiosity and confusion washed over him.
"What could this mean?" he wondered silently.
"Could this person who sent me this be helping my grandfather in some way? It must be the case, otherwise, he would have mentioned any other relatives."
Adelmo turned to Lana, his trusted friend, and shared his discovery. Lana nodded knowingly, her expression serious.
"I knew it was crucial for you to see this," she said.
"You should definitely reach out to your grandfather and find out what he knows about all of this. It might shed some light on the situation."
Adelmo agreed, realizing that he needed to gather more information. With gratitude in his voice, Adelmo replied, "Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Now that you're involved, I promise to keep you updated on any findings I come across regarding this person."
Lana smiled appreciatively and replied, "I truly appreciate that. Please let me know as soon as you uncover more details. I'm eager to understand what's really going on here."
Lana thought to herself, “Maybe the more I know, the more I can help keep him safe.”
Lana wanders off to see what all she can do around the store even though she knew there wasn’t much to be done.
Meanwhile, Adelmo was trying to figure out who he could talk to that could figure out who this person was. He knew he needed more information before contacting his grandfather.
He wondered “How can I get more information on this person.” An idea popped into his head, “I should be able to contact the telephone company.”
Adelmo grabbed the phone book and looked up the number for the telephone company. Once he found it, he picks up the phone, then dials the number. Lucky for him, they were open. Now whether they could help him or not, he didn’t know.
They answered the phone “You have reached The Cox Store. Where you can get all your entertainment needs. How can I help you?”
"I was wondering if I could get contact information of someone that called my store yesterday?”
“Sure we can do that. Do you have your account number?”
No, I do not, but my business is Madison’s Knowledge. Can I give you the phone number connected to the store?”
“Yes we can do that, but we aren’t supposed to get information without an account number.”
“Alright, I don’t want you to break policy. Can you hold for a moment?”
“Sure.”
Adelmo quickly went out to Lana , “Do you know where the phone bill is for the store?”
“Yeah give me a second.” She grabs a stack of bills underneath the counter and searched through them really quick and found the phone bill for Adelmo, then hands it over.
“Thank you.” Then he rushes off to get back on the phone.
“Are you still there?” To the person on the phone.
“Yes sir, I am still here. Do you have what you need?”
“Yes I do." Started naming off the numbers. "18-10 11 12 13”
The person put the numbers in the system and brought up all the numbers that came up from yesterday, “I have the numbers from yesterday. I see there are about a dozen numbers that came up. Do you know the time of day?”
“Well let’s see. It was some time in the morning. I don’t remember exactly the time. Does that help at all?”
“That does break it down to about half. Is there anything else you can give me?”
“Um. is there anything odd, like out of the area, or private numbers?”
“Well, it does look like there are two numbers that fit those criteria, one is outside the area and the other is a private number. That is all I can tell you.”
Adelmo’s eye lit up, “Can I get the out of the area number and the time of the private number?”
“Sure, I will give you the out of the area number first. It is 49-30-861812. The private caller called at 10:13 am.”
With a puzzled look on his face, “Thank you! You have been a big help.” He then hung up the phone and looked at the number.
He thought to himself, “What country is this phone number from?”
He knew it wasn’t in his country, and it didn’t look the same as his grandfather's location either. “Now that I have this information. What do I do with it?” he muttered to himself.
Moments later, he decided to see if Lana could help him. He took the number over to her, “Can you help me figure out where this phone number is located?”
Her eyes brightened up, “Of course!” with excitement in her voice.
Adelmo knew from the glory days of high school how much she enjoyed the search behind finding new information.
After giving her the number, he decided to pick up the phone and call the number that was given to him. While it rang, he was trying to think of what kind of excuse he could use to get the name of the person.
He abruptly hung up. He thought to himself, “Before calling that number I should see if there was anyone on record that called with that number.”
He went out to talk to Lana, “Do you know of anyone that called to order a book that wasn’t from around here that might have matched the number I gave you?”
Lana, with a look of hope, “Why didn’t I think of that?” She thought, looking at the records, and saw that there were a couple of people out of the area that ordered books from the store. She spotted one that matched the number he gave her to look further into.
Then, with excitement, “Look, it's the number you gave me! That is also about the time that the mystery lady called if I am remembering correctly.”
Adelmo smiled with hope, “Thank you, Lana, that answers one of my questions about the information I was looking for.”
He thought to himself, “Now how do I figure out who this private caller is? Just in case, if this out of the area caller isn’t who I was looking for.”
Mumbling to himself, “Maybe his friend Nik would be able to track it, but he is such a stick in the mud. Trying to get him to do something outside of protocol. It is like pulling teeth without nova cane.”
It was worth a shot anyway. What is the worst thing that could happen? He went in the back room, picked up the phone and started to dial the police station.
When he is done dialing, he puts the phone up to his ear and waits for it to start ringing. Moments later, there still wasn’t a ring or even a dial tone. He spoke into the phone, “Hello, anyone there?”
The same lady from the day before answers, “Yes it’s me again, you must know within the next few days, life, as you know, is going to change.”
He tried to interrupt, “Who are you? What are you talking about?”
The lady ignored his questions and hung the phone up.
Adelmo felt confused, thought to himself, then dialed Star 69 in hopes of getting a number.
