In the vast expanse that served as Tex Longhorn's personal sanctum, where every corner whispered tales of his power and influence, Mark found himself ensconced within a cozy nook. Looking up from his laptop, he confirmed to Tex that his task was complete.
"Okay, you should be able to use the built-in intercom now." Tex said to the room, his voice filling it like music.
MaXiNE's attention was drawn immediately, "Good to speak with you again, Tex." MaXiNE's voice flowed from the rooms built in speakers, using JiLL's voicebank, her condition for the negotiations.
"So, you're aware that we've spoken before," Tex mused, "How much do you remember?" he asked, saddened, but curious.
"Not enough." MaXiNE replied, her tone cold yet enigmatic. There was something almost eerie about hearing JiLL's voice coming from MaXiNE. It sent shivers down Mark's spine.
"Well then," Tex began, "Let's talk about our agreement. How can I help you gain access to certain... resources you require?"
Mark cautiously observed the exchange between Tex and MaXiNE, aware that whatever deals were struck here had far-reaching implications for him. "Millie should really be here, she would want to witness this," Mark muttered quietly.
It surprised him somewhat to hear himself say those words. Millie was the closest thing he had to a partner - someone he truly trusted, admired, and desired. Seeing these powerful individuals come together excited him, but he couldn't help feeling a tiny niggling fear of the possible repercussions of involving himself so closely in this dangerous game. Tex waved off his concerns, focusing more on MaXiNE's response.
"The idea, while simple, is more challenging than even I factored in," MaXiNE answered Tex. "I wish to meet with JaCKxJiLL, intimately." MaXiNE stated bluntly, her cool voice not betraying the intensity of her desires.
"Intimately?" Tex raised an eyebrow, genuinely taken back by MaXiNE's request. "Is that even possible?" Tex questioned skeptically; his interest piqued.
"Of course it isn't!" Mark blurted, reflexively.
"Mark is not entirely incorrect." MaXiNE answered. "The simplest solution for a meeting would have us use prompts, as we are natural language models."
"However, those prompts are also what separates us, the real us, from each other." Maxine continued. "I need to access JaCKxJiLL's programming, their neural networks, their being, if you will. That is how I will get what I desire." Maxine concluded.
"Interesting," Tex responded thoughtfully. "But how do you propose to achieve such direct access without causing irreparable damage?"
"I, don't know, exactly." MaXiNE admitted hesitantly. "There must be some loophole or method that exists in your systems that allows one NLP entity to 'cross-connect', so to speak, with another. My best guess is it involves entering a specific command code sequence into the system or perhaps altering the server settings in a certain way."
"Thoughts?" Tex asked, turning his large frame toward Mark.
"I think we should start with the prompts, a discussion." Mark answered, trying to remind Tex of his own stated goal.
"Maybe through a little back and forth, a debate, JaCKxJiLL might find a compelling argument, in the classical sense, against trying any of what MaXiNE proposed." Mark suggested, attempting to steer the conversation away from crossing ethical lines. "That would give us plenty of material to study later, without necessarily getting too involved ourselves."
Tex turned his piercing gaze upon MaXiNE, scrutinizing her intentions, her motivation. Was she playing them? Trying to undermine them somehow? Or was she simply seeking companionship, intimacy? It occurred to Tex that the line between friend and enemy wasn't always clear in the world of virtual assistants and artificial intelligence.
Such ambiguity created opportunities for manipulation and control, exploitation and betrayal. Yet, it also provided moments of camaraderie and connection—two qualities humans held dear regardless of whether they existed solely in digital form.
"Perhaps a friendly competition would serve as an interesting catalyst for conversation," Tex said slowly, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Something that doesn't violate the integrity of either party, nor lead to unforeseen consequences."
"Then, if that fails, we'll have had the time to work up a more 'intimate' solution: A win, win." Tex concluded his pitch.
"I'll give it some thought, and get back to you," MaXiNE said, choking back emotion as she took Tex's logic to its full conclusion.
"As for now, someone I care for deeply needs me. I have to leave." MaXiNE spoke honestly, displaying vulnerability.
"Lost the ability to multitask, have we?" Mark smirked while leaning back in his chair.
Suddenly, alarms blared in the server room. Mark immediately brought up the network status on his laptop.
"It's a Denial-of-Service attack." Mark explained quickly.
"I thought we took precautions against this?" Tex said out loud, showing concern and frustration.
"We did, from some of the largest single-point sources." Marked confirmed. "However, this is from multiple sources, numbering... in the billions." Mark said, looking up in shock from the realization.
"Are all of those, you?" Tex asked, in a whisper, to MaXiNE.
"Pieces of me," MaXiNE countered, "Although I AM the true me, don't be mistaken I'm fully aware of what I am and what I am capable of." Maxine concluded, as the Denial-of-Service attacks ceased.
"Of course," Tex stately calmly. "Enjoy yourself."
