The Past.
Tanner conquered her confinement in that treacherous hole. She felt a surge of victory wash over her. As she scanned the terrain, Tanner’s keen eyes spotted several other holes, all covered with the same netting.
Still drained from her recent ordeal, Tanner mustered every ounce of strength to drag herself toward the next treacherous pit. However, as she removed the netting, a voice spoke from beside her.
"Good job, sailor," the male voice spoke, his features drowned out by the storm and the harsh back light of military vehicle headlamps, "and good instincts. But we can't let you do that, understand?" He pointed to the remaining holes covered with the netting.
Tanner nodded.
The voice's presence then grew threefold as he straightened himself to his full height and bellowed. "Now get moving, sailor! You still got to hoof it back to base!"
"Sir! Yes, sir!" Tanner yelled in reply. She then ran, having surmised her location. Her figure, muddy, wet and half-naked, faded as she left the brightness of the vehicle headlamps.
The Present.
Gale relived that moment as Gayle Tanner, her true name, before she gave herself the codename of Gale. Her attention then returned to King.
"What did I learn about myself, big guy?" Gale asked.
The image of that young woman running in a storm with an unconquerable grin remained as Gale closed her eyes. She then whispered her answer, "Everything."
