She believed that they didn’t really mean any of what they said. It seemed to her that they were just trying to protect her in their own clownish kind of way from certain heartbreak and also from being possibly abused.

They were right about her not being much of a catch for men of means who could find others far more interesting than her. Jillian was grudgingly aware that she wasn’t that much to look at.
