A shutdown is like a meltdown but internal. High-masking autistics are particularly prone to having them over meltdowns because they're so used to hiding their true feelings and behaviour.
When I have one I find it hard to process events, speak, or deviate from my set routine (even if that routine makes no sense in the situation) - kind of like being on autopilot. In the worst cases all I can do is sit there. I'm aware of everything going on, I just can't do much about it. It's a scary experience and the only way for me to really calm down is to curl up somewhere dark and quiet.
