Haruto’s questioning reactions to Daimon’s no sense of response, getting to the point of ignoring Haruto’s existence and just doing his own way, but something got Daimon’s attention.
"If you're so introverted, punk, let’s see if your mind works as good as your reactions," Haruto said, pulling a chessboard from the shelves on the balcony overlooking the spacious detention room.
The detention room at Noon High was unusually spacious, more akin to a lounge than a typical classroom. It featured an expansive area in the middle, leaving ample room for movement or gatherings. Above, a short balcony overlooked the scene, adding an element of architectural interest.
The furnishings were unexpectedly comfortable for a detention room. Several plush leather couches were arranged in a semi-circle, offering a relaxed seating option. The floor was adorned with thick, soft carpets that muted the sounds of footsteps, contributing to the room's surprisingly cozy atmosphere.
Toward the back, there was a small area that seemed to serve as an informal games corner. It was here that Haruto headed, his intentions clear without a word. He reached for a well-worn chessboard tucked away on a shelf, its pieces arranged and ready for a game.
Daimon, observing Haruto's actions from his seat, quickly caught on to the unspoken challenge. With a burst of energy, he sprang up from the couch, his eyes lighting up with competitive fire.
"I’m in!" he declared, his voice resonating with enthusiasm.
He strode confidently towards Haruto, his steps quick and purposeful. The other students, lounging on the couches or idly chatting, turned their attention to the unfolding scene, intrigued by the sudden shift in energy.
As Daimon reached Haruto, they exchanged a brief, knowing look – an unspoken acknowledgment of the battle of wits that was about to commence. The chessboard was set on a small table between two armchairs, positioned so that the onlookers could easily view the game.
The rest of the detention students, sensing the significance of this match, gathered around the area, forming a semi-circle of spectators. The room, usually filled with the low hum of disinterested conversations, was now charged with anticipation. Eyes were fixed on Daimon and
Haruto, waiting for the first move in what promised to be an intriguing game.
The other students, sensing a showdown, gathered around students, their curiosity piqued.
Haruto opened with the Alekhine's Defense, a bold, aggressive start.
"This will be interesting, Daimon," he said, a confident smirk on his face.
Daimon, slightly taken aback by Haruto's choice, responded with the Bishop's Opening.
"This guy’s crazier than me, what the hell?” he commented, a hint of respect in his voice.
As the game progressed, the moves became more intense, each player trying to outmaneuver the other. The room was silent except for the ticking of the clock and the occasional murmur of admiration from the spectators.
As the chess game between Daimon and Haruto unfolded, each move was laden with strategy and anticipation. The room, filled with their peers, was unusually quiet, the tension almost tangible.
Haruto's Strategy: Haruto, with calculated precision, moved his knight, setting a trap for Daimon.
His face was a mask of concentration, eyes darting across the board as he planned several moves ahead. "Let's see how you handle this," he murmured, half to himself, half to Daimon.
Daimon's Response: Daimon, unshaken by Haruto's aggressive play, countered with a surprising move of his own, pushing his pawn forward in a bold gambit. "I'm not one for predictable plays," he said calmly, a slight smile playing on his lips.
The Spectators: The students watching the match whispered among themselves, impressed by the level of skill on display. "These guys are on another level," one student whispered. "It's like watching a high-stakes game," another added.
Turning Point: As the game neared its climax, Haruto made a daring move, capturing one of
Daimon's rooks. The onlookers gasped, thinking Haruto had gained the upper hand. But Daimon, unfazed, took a moment to study the board, then executed a series of moves that left Haruto's king exposed.
Haruto's Dilemma: Haruto leaned back; his brow furrowed as he analyzed the board. The spectators held their breath, sensing that the tide had turned. Haruto glanced at Daimon, a newfound respect in his eyes. "Didn't see that coming," he admitted.
Final Moves: With only seconds left on the clock, Daimon advanced his queen, orchestrating a series of moves that led to a stalemate.
The room erupted in applause and excitement. The game had been a draw, but the skill and intelligence both players exhibited were undeniable.
"You've stagnated my interest, Haruto," Daimon said, extending his hand for a handshake.
"Not bad yourself, Daimon," Haruto replied, shaking his hand with a genuine laugh.
As the atmosphere in the room lightened, they started chatting about the school, teachers, and other students. The conversation flowed easily, and soon they were laughing and sharing stories.
Daimon decided to order an extravagant XXXL pizza for everyone which he paid over 40000 Yen for, much to the amazement of the group.
The pizza, too large for a single box, came in twelve separate ones. To add to the excitement, they also sneaked in two boxes of energy drinks.
The group's mission to retrieve the pizza and drinks without getting caught by the detention teacher was a comedic escapade. Haruto, in his haste, slipped, sending two boxes of pizza flying, landing comically on his face.
The room erupted in laughter, their noise almost alerting the teacher.
Finally, they settled down to enjoy their feast, the room filled with the chatter of shared experiences and laughter.
Daimon, once an outsider, found himself at the center of this newfound camaraderie.
As the detention period came to an end, the students left the room in high spirits. Daimon and Haruto, now with a newfound respect for each other, walked out together, talking and joking.
The day had started with tension and rivalry, but it ended with the beginning of an unexpected friendship.
