KANG DAE
Loui and I were out on patrolling duty and as a good police officer he is, he wanted to eat donuts and coffee so we had stopped at a cafe that he said and I quote ‘Sold the best goddamn mouth-watering donuts in town.’ And as he went into the store to buy our food, I stayed in the car, distracting myself by looking through the window. Even though it was morning, there were many people walking through the streets. Spending more and more time in this town made me realize how cozy it was to live at, I could tell why people loved coming to this place to settle their roots and start a new life.
‘Maybe I could do the same…’ Rainbow’s image came to my mind and I shook my head. No. I can’t. I had to stop getting distracted and fulfill my last mission to the McRaytans before I could move on. And I couldn’t stay here even if I wanted to. My target currently lived here, it wasn’t a good idea to stay after succeeding with my plans of revenge.
I came back to my senses and my eyes fixed on something, someone was walking by the other side of the road and I recognized him. That merman. Master’s merman. I followed his moves as he walked down the street, he stopped next to another omega, a blonde one. It looked like they were friends due to how cheerful they were talking to each other.
“Hey! I’m back, get ready to try the best donuts in town.” Loui’s words distracted me, I gave him a soft smile, taking the coffee and donut he was offering me, and then looked back at the merman omega and my eyes opened wide.
While I looked away to take the things my partner was offering someone else had joined the omegas. Rainbow. Why was he with that merman? Loui had told me everyone knew Rainbow but they looked like they were friends too. Maybe it was part of his job?
“What are you looking at?” Loui said again and looked to where my gaze was fixed. “Oh! It’s Rainbow, do you want to go and say hi? I have no problem waiting here.”
“No, it’s okay.” I sighed looking at the three omegas and then an idea came to me, I looked at Loui with a soft smile. “Do you perhaps know the other two?”
“The other two? Yes, the blonde is Mikaela Doyle and the other one is Julien Shepard.” He answered taking a bite of his donut. Shepard? Where did I hear that before? “He is Byron’s fated mate, you know the wolf pack’s Alpha, and the other one is the beta’s mate.”
“Oh, I see.” All the loose ends I had in my brain connected and now everything made sense. 'I know who did it.'
I looked again at the group of omegas, watching how they walked towards a store and disappeared into it. In the distance, I noticed a strange person looking at them, a man fully covered in black clothes, he had a camera out and it looked like he was taking pictures of the omegas. I raised an eyebrow but didn't give it much importance at the moment, but I’ll have to look into it later.
“So, how’s the donut?” Loui asked, looking at me with expectant eyes, waiting to see my reaction. I looked at the chocolate with sprinkles donut he gave me and took a bite out of it. It wasn’t as sweet as I expected and it fit my palette.
“This is nice, I thought it was going to be sweet but it's just the perfect sweetness,” I said with a soft smile and took another bite.
“Right? My wife loves that shop. She used to have cravings for their donuts when she was pregnant with the twins.” Loui started talking, he unconsciously loves talking about his family. He could go hours of talking about them and I realized how happy he was having them. I was a bit jealous every time he talked about them. “Sorry, I keep talking about my wife and my family, I just love them so much.”
“It’s okay, I like listening to your stories.” I smiled and then finished my donut and took a sip of my hot coffee.
“See? This is why I like you. Lorenzo hates it when I talk about them.” Loui looked at me, moved by my words. It's hard for me to admit it, but his attitude and his dramatic self made me like him very much. “Never quit this job, Kang Dae.”
“Shall we go? I think we did enough patrolling.” I said, avoiding his last statement. If only he knew…
“Sure, let's go back to the station,” Loui said finishing his donut and putting his hands back on the steering wheel.
~oOoOo~
As soon as I walked through my apartment’s door I walked straight to my murder board, I had to update it with the new intel I had. Starting with moving my prime suspect to my target and also adding that merman to the board. Once everything was in place I proudly looked at my murder board. It was him, Byron Shepard, the one who murdered my master. His reason? His fated mate and husband, Julien, was the merman my master wanted. Things were getting more and more complicated with the fact that Rainbow was somehow involved with the omega merman, I would have to keep doing some investigation, it was not going to be easy to achieve this mission but I had to try, for my master.
My gaze moved from Byron’s picture to the word that joined the wolf to his mate. Fated mates. There was that word again, the one Loui had explained to me. I hated to do this but to know more about it I had to do research and sadly Google was the only way. I sat in front of my laptop and wrote the word ‘Fated mates’ in the search bar, a lot of pages and articles popped up explaining everything. Opening and reading some of them made me realize that all the symptoms and things I felt next to Rainbow were exactly what was described there.
‘A bond is not one-sided, he feels it too.’ Loui’s words came to my mind, maybe I could ask Rainbow about it, but it could be a liability for my mission. If he truly was my fated mate and he was somehow related to my target, it was impossible for me to be with him. I had to reject him, but what if it hurt him?
‘Fated mates bond rejection’ I wrote once again in the search bar, reading the first paragraph that showed up.
“Rejecting a fated bond with the consent of both sides won’t provoke any side effects to the couple, but if the rejection is one-sided it could cause grave harm to the rejected side. If an alpha rejects an omega, the omega’s heartbreak could cause extreme depression that could cause their death as they have no reason to live without their mate. If an alpha is rejected by their omega, the loss of their mate will cause an extreme depression that could drive them into madness.” I sighed as I finished reading the text, pulling my hair back. I knew I shouldn’t trust Google with these kinds of matters, it sounded too dramatic to be true, but maybe it was.
This is going to be harder than I expected…
