"Who the hell is Mimi Sokolova?", John curiously asked. "She's a woman I used to work for.", Ripley responded with a sad face. "Why the long face?" he again asked. "She's an awful person. I don't wanna talk about it!" she said, this time with slight anger in her voice. "Ok, ok. You don't have to tell me anything.", John said, lightly putting a hand on her shoulder. She let a smile slowly creep across her face, saying "Ya' know, I might have just met you like, twenty minutes ago, but you're a nice guy, Mr. Doe.". "Call me John.", he responded with an equal smile. "I would say call me Ripley, but you've already been calling me that.", she said with a giggle. He let out a dry chuckle, saying "Well, I should get going to Mimi's or whatever.". "Keep your guard up!", she said as he walked out the door, shoving the card and key into his pocket. After memorizing the address, he hailed a taxi.
"Where to, sir?", said the peppy young driver. "Uh, this adress.", John responded, flashing the card in front of the driver. "Alrighty, then!", he said. "So, how are you?", asked the driver. "Eh, I'm fine.", John responded. The driver cleared his throat before saying "Well sir, my boss told me to be more friendly and chummy with the passengers, so I got a box of icebreakers.". He then pulled one from the little box in the door and looked at the question without a second thought. "Do you ever feel like the weight of the world is upon you?", he said, still in an unusually happy voice. Unusual for the question, of course. Feeling the irony, John responded, "Like you would never know.". The driver cleared his throat yet again and simply turned on the radio to slightly silence the awkwardness of the whole situation. After a little while, he got to the trashy-looking hotel-esque domain of Miss Sokolova, stepping out and tipping the driver.
He headed into the building, eliciting a "Jesus Christ..." from him when he saw the brothel-esque surroundings, bathed in red, pink, and purple lights. He didn't stop to talk to the people he saw, only giving them curious and slightly disgusted looks. He walked up to the desk, and a lady greeted him. "Hello, sir. Please, check this.", she said while giving him a menu of sorts. There were pictures of girls with names, to which he passed on, "I'm not here for sex. I'm here to see Miss Sokolova.". The lady hesitated, responding "Sir, she's very busy. Perhaps you can-", "No. I'm here to see Miss Sokolova.".
John's bisexual and asexual. Ripley is straight, and Dorien is bisexual as well, but tries to date women more than he tries to date men. He will still date men, however.
"John Doe is a laid-off detective in the year 3006, who finds the only book left in existence. The creator of this book cursed whoever would read it, with great responsibility. The reason is unknown, but it is widely believed that the writer was a being millions of years old that was angry at the world for moving past books, so they cursed the book, calling it the Crying Story. The curse is that whoever reads the book is then given the responsibility of protecting it from the demons inside. There are seven entities in it, and in the wrong hands, they could wreak havoc on the entire world. The most dangerous entity in the book is called The Joyous Day. Those who go to it for guidance have never returned. John Doe is given this responsibility and understands the weight of it. The fate of the world is in his hands." All these details and more are in Julian Ferguson's latest fifth novel, "John Doe: Detective Extraordinaire".
