When I get to where Wyatt is sitting, I introduce myself like it’s the first time we’re meeting.
“Hi, you’re Wyatt, right?”, I ask with a polite smile, “I’m Audrey, I think we were paired up for the assignment this semester?”. He looks a bit confused, but I think even he believes that I don’t remember him.
“Hi, yes, that’s right”, Wyatt eventually answers quietly.
Class is over so people are leaving the lecture hall as we are still talking about what to do about the assignment. I suggest exchanging numbers and communicating that way, since it’s the easiest way to decide about meeting times and such. As Wyatt is handing over his phone so I can put in my number someone calls out my name.
“Hey! What do you think you’re doing Audrey?”, he says. I look up confused, Wyatt’s phone in my hand. It’s my ex-boyfriend, Henry, he has walked into the lecture hall and he looks pissed.
“What?”, I say.
“You’re giving this random nerd your number? I don’t like that. You’re my girlfriend, you shouldn’t be giving guys your number”, he says with a scowl. He looks at Wyatt with contempt. I can tell Henry is about to grab the phone from my hand, he always had a bad temper. Before he can do that I move my arm out of reach.
“It’s for a group assignment”, I say shortly. I put in my number quickly and hand back the phone to Wyatt.
“Let’s figure out the assignment details later”, I say to Wyatt. Then I turn to Henry with a slight frown.
“Let’s go, we need to talk”, I say as I motion for Henry to follow me out.
When we’re outside, I look around to make sure no one else is listening in on our conversation. I give Henry a stern look.
“What?”, he asks, “What did I do?”.
“What did you do?”, I ask incredulously. Before he can utter another word I’m crossing my arms, I’m seething.
“Stop telling people I’m your girlfriend! We broke up!”, I exclaim.
“Wait, so you were actually giving that guy your number?”, Henry says.
“What? No! I told you it was for the course work”, I say.
“Then why are you mad that I said you were my girlfriend in front of him?”, he asks.
“Because I’m not your girlfriend? Hello, are you dumb? I don’t want to be called your girlfriend in front of anyone!”, I’m about to lose my mind, why is he so aggravating.
“But I think we should get back together, I never wanted to break up in the first place”, Henry says to my astonishment. The nerve on this guy, really.
“What? You what? No, Henry we should not get back together. Get it through your thick skull, we are never getting back together, the only reason I’m even tolerating you right now is because our families are business partners. So, stay away from me with this ‘getting back together’-bullshit or I’m really going to go insane. I never even liked you, I just dated you out of pity and boredom!”, I can see that he’s taken aback by my outburst. We’ve known each other as family acquaintances for a long time, since we’re both from rich families, so he knows I have a sharp tongue, but I don’t think he was ready for me to use it on him. I on the other hand know he has a bad temper, that he shows anyone and everyone, so I’m not surprised when he starts cussing me out, he’s red in the face and getting really worked up. I tune him out, but decide it’s safer to pretend to hear him out, if I try to leave now he might get violent. But I really have to try hard not to roll my eyes at him. Unfortunately I know Henry so well, that I know he won’t leave me alone easily even after all this. After he calms down he’ll start wanting to hang out with me again, I know he’s always had a crush on me. It really was a mistake dating him, now he thinks he has a chance with me. Pathetic.
Today has been a real shit-show. I need to unwind when I get away from campus. Maybe I’ll go to my favorite comic book store, wonder if they have the new issue of my favorite series…
