The van raced to headquarters, where a platoon of agents and soldiers waited for their orders from me. Thanks to the necklace, we had her exact coordinates. These men were going down. If it is the last thing I do. Scarlett’s safety is my number one priority, even if it means I die in the process. The year I spent watching Scarlett, I grew to care for her, but over these past months of being with her, I’ve completely fallen in love with her. The way she moves, the way she speaks, every single little thing about her makes my heart race and body yearn. She is my world; I will have nothing on this planet without her in it. These monsters will pay for everything they’ve done.
As the van approached the tall building, I ran inside, eager to see what they had done so far. Inside sat rows of desks, each with a high-end military grade computer with an agent sitting at each one. Soldiers lined the back of the room, awaiting orders to get suited up and hear the plan.
“What do we have so far?” I asked the room, as I had already sent over the GPS information.
A young, petite woman stood; her strawberry hair tied back. “Sir, drones have canvased the building,” she motioned for me to look over her monitors, “we have made a mock-up of the layout. There are two entrance points. Both are heavily guarded. The building is not too large, but there are several enemy combatants.” She had me follow her to another desk. “As you can see here, thanks to the thermal drones, we suspect Ms. Aberra is being kept on the lower level, dead center of the building. There are approximately four rooms on the main level and three on the lower level. As of right now, there are approximately 75 combatants.” She pointed to two outlines that were highlighted. “We suspect these two to be Viktor and Alexi of the Volkov family.”
“Thank you, agent.” I went to shake her hand.
“Agent Hara, sir.” She shook my hand. “We will be in your ear the entire time to give intel.”
I turned to the soldiers, awaiting my orders. The layout of the building and photos of the Volkov family were now projected on the screen behind me. “Alright boys, here is the plan.” I demanded the full attention of the room. “Viktor and Alexi Volkov need to be kept alive to pay for their crimes.” Despite my wish to personally shoot Alexi in the head, we had to make an effort to allow them to survive and be arrested. “Try to keep them alive. Alpha team, you will make entry through the North entrance and clear the upper level. Oscar team, you will make entry through the West entrance and clear the rooms on the lower level to give me cover to get Scarlett out. Sniper team, you cover the perimeter.” At that moment, General Aberra entered the room. “There will be no failures on this mission. We will ensure Miss Aberra’s safety at all costs. There is no turning back. Everyone understand?” My voice echoed in the room.
“Sir, yes, Sir.” The men responded.
“Suit up and roll out!” I commanded. In unison, every soldier got their gear on and made their way to the armored vehicles.
“Any updates?” I asked the General while I put my gear on.
“Nothing yet. I’m expecting they will call anytime now.” He informed me.
“You should stay here, General. No offense, but they want you dead.”
He scoffed, “I will be there, Officer.” His voice was demanding. I couldn’t tell him no.
“Fine, get your gear on, and stay back.” He nodded, putting on his vest, helmet, and grabbing a weapon.
We made our way to the rally point, just out of view of the Russian’s outpost. My heart beating like a drum, eager to get Scarlett out of the hell she must be in. We set up our intel van and made sure everything was in working order.
“Any changes Agent Hara?” I asked the woman sitting at the computer.
“Viktor and Alexi both appear to be with Miss Aberra at this moment, along with six tangos.”
What is going on? I had to fight every urge to burst in there right now. At that moment, the General’s phone went off. “Is it them?” I asked him.
David put his phone on speaker and answered. “Hello?”
“David. Long time no see.” The thick Russian accent was menacing and evil. “Are you missing something?”
“Viktor. Let her go now.” David pleaded, his face red with wrath. I noticed tears welling in his eyes.
“Now, now. You have something of mine. Something that was stolen from me. Give it back and I will return your little girl. Safe and sound.” Bullshit, they will kill her at any chance.
“You know I can’t do that, Viktor.” David knew they would kill her either way, too. Handing over the thumb drive would be futile and would put our Nation at risk. But that’s when we heard it. A loud slap. My body tensed; jaw clenched. I squeezed onto my rifle, fighting every urge to kill him right now.
“Talk some sense into your father.” The man’s voice was forceful.
“Get away from me.” I finally heard her voice. That a girl, she sounded strong, despite the situation. I heard her spit. All I wanted was to take the phone and curse the man holding the woman I love, but I also had to remain strong and stick to the plan.
“Feisty one. Have it your way. Listen to this, David.” Viktor let out a disturbing chuckle.
I could feel the sounds of bone and boot hitting flesh scorching into my brain. My fists clenched tighter, almost breaking the barrel of my gun, my teeth clenched so tight I bit a hole inside my cheek. No. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I wanted to rip every single one of those men limb from limb by hand. Then, her screams and cries for them to stop. I couldn’t take it anymore. I stormed out of the van, collapsing into the cold dirt. Pounding my fists into the earth, screaming with rage. Tears threatened to run down my face. This was my fault they had her. I couldn’t keep her safe. I need to make this right.
A firm touch on my shoulder brought me back to reality. “Mason.” It was David. “There is nothing any of us could have done to prevent this, no matter how hard we tried.” It was as if he could read my thoughts. “I’m not a blind man. I can tell you love her.” That was the first time hearing it out loud, reassuring my feelings for her even more. He looked me in the eye. “I know I can’t go in there, but one man to another, I give you full permission to do whatever you need to in there. You have my word. They wouldn’t come without a fight. It was the only way. I’ll have your back no matter what.” He was putting it nicely, saying fuck the system, kill those mother fuckers, oh trust me, I want to. “Get my daughter out of there.”
“You have my word, Sir.” With my heart racing and mind consumed by anger and a thirst for vengeance, I stood, prepared for battle.
