Just as John opened his mouth, the door to the bar opened. Ripley smiled as she saw a lone man in the rain, his pale skin glistening in the lamplight. "Dorien!". The man looked up, his golden eyes shining at her. John rolled his eyes, saying "Not another damn fake-pire.". The man seemed unfazed by John's comment, closing the door behind him and walking over to Ripley.
"Hello, my darling.", he said, in a deep and soft voice. Ripley grabbed his head before he could speak, and started kissing him like there was no tomorrow. When she was done with her little session, Dorien smiled, responding "Missed me, Ripley?". She nodded as she sunk into his arms. John finished his drink and left twenty dollars on the table. "I feel like I'm interrupting something... I'll leave.". Ripley looked over at him, responding "Oh, no John! You're ok." Dorian asked Ripley as he held her, "Has this been paying you well?". Ripley sighed, saying "No.". Dorien smiled, hugging Ripley tightly.
"Remember beloved, you can always come with me and The Lost Guild.". As John was walking out the door, he closed it and asked, "Sorry, what the hell is The Lost Guild?". Dorien let go of Ripley and walked over to John. "I'm afraid I can't tell you that, Mr. Doe. But what I can tell you is that we know that we need you to protect something for us.". John backed away from Dorien slightly. "What exactly do you need me to protect?", he asked. Dorien looked outside to see if anyone was coming, then said "I can't show you here. Will you come with me?". John mumbled as he walked with him towards the door. "If he murders me, I'm coming for you first.", he said to Ripley.
"Don't murder him, honey.", Ripley humorously said to Dorien. Dorien kissed her forehead, quietly giggling, saying "I'll try my best." Ripley waved him goodbye as he and John walked out the door to the bar. "So, are you some sort of god-complex person?", Dorien chuckled, saying "No. But in a way, you could consider me a god.". John raised his eyebrow, asking "The hell does that mean?". Dorien grabbed a picture from his breast pocket, and it showed him and a few different people, including Ripley. There was a big tapestry behind them, and on it was a beautiful garden with many bookcases, and books were sitting all around the garden. John laughed, asking Dorien "Do you guys do drugs or something?".
Dorien looked offended, saying "No, we believe in preserving knowledge from years ago! 2023, 2016, and even the ancient eras like 1959. Hence, all the books. Speaking of books, I need you to carry this.". He grabbed John's arm and dragged him into an alleyway. He sat down and motioned John to do so too. He looked to see if anyone was around, and then handed him a book. It had a leather cover with golden corner guards, and nothing was engraved in the front.
John was about to open it, but Dorien slammed the book closed. "The hell?", confusedly said John. "Don't open it! I need you to take it to someone.", he said. "Now, I know you may be confused. The reason why I need you to take it is because I'm risking my life being here right now. The government knows of me and this book, and they want to sweep us under the rug. It's the last book in the world, and I and The Lost Guild are the last people to have it.". John sighed, asking "So you're saying I need to risk my own life to save a book?". Dorien shook his head. "Not just any book. This contains powerful entities. If it gets into the wrong hands, they will be released, and they will wreak havoc upon the world. John Doe, I need you to take this book to The Lady Fox. She wrote it in 2021, and she lost it years ago. If it gets back into her hands, she can destroy it.".
John raised his eyebrow, asking "Why would she need to destroy it if she wrote it?". Dorien sighed, saying "She cursed it. She was angry at everyone for getting rid of all books, so she put a curse on them. Whoever reads it will have to protect it. But she made the curse too heavy, and many people have been turned into brainless entities. Those people are the entities in the book. So, she needs to set their souls free before they get out.".
I smelled someone trivializing the cursed book. And I wonder how it got into Doe's hands. Why did Lady Fox curse it, and are there any conditions to free that soul? Intriguing, yes. Keep going, Julian!
"John Doe is a laid-off detective in the year 3006, who finds the only book left in existence. The creator of this book cursed whoever would read it, with great responsibility. The reason is unknown, but it is widely believed that the writer was a being millions of years old that was angry at the world for moving past books, so they cursed the book, calling it the Crying Story. The curse is that whoever reads the book is then given the responsibility of protecting it from the demons inside. There are seven entities in it, and in the wrong hands, they could wreak havoc on the entire world. The most dangerous entity in the book is called The Joyous Day. Those who go to it for guidance have never returned. John Doe is given this responsibility and understands the weight of it. The fate of the world is in his hands." All these details and more are in Julian Ferguson's latest fifth novel, "John Doe: Detective Extraordinaire".
