"Okay, my show isn't going to be as fancy but let's do this," Azar began, shouting to get our attention. We all turned to watch, politely quieting down. I had seen more of the fier elemental's fighting than anyone else but I was still interested in what he planned on sharing. Azar clapped his hands together, flames tickling out of the edges of his palms. As he pulled his hands apart his metal staff appeared from the space in between, flames dancing all around it. I was very curious about where their weapons stayed when they were not using them. Azar grabbed his staff from mid-air, twirling it lazily. I tried not to chuckle as his face seemed so uncaring but his moves were so fluid and fancy.
"Firebird!" Maayan shouted, raising both arms into the air.
"Simmer down," Azar snapped back. "You'll ruin my finale."
The fier elemental planted his staff into the ground, sighing loudly as he looked over at us. I could feel a wave of anger and from the tips of Azar's fingers rose a bright red flame. He tossed the small fireball onto the tip of his staff, twirling it again. The red flame created a beautiful streak of color, much like the fire dancers, you would see at the circus or county fair. He stopped twirling, grinning slightly as he raised his hand up, this time to conjure an orange flame. The orange fireball joined the red one and Azar gave us another twirl, flipping the staff in the air for good measure. I clapped without thinking, but Azar smiled, enjoying the attention. I could feel his happiness as he summoned another flame, bright yellow in color. He was still twirling as he added the yellow, the colors melting together, like the glow of a sunset. He began to walk a few paces away from the bonfire, turning suddenly as he jabbed his staff toward the wood. The three flames twirled around each other, crashing loudly into the woodpile. Large flames roared up from the center, the blast reaching a good 10 feet up into the air. I raised my arm to protect my face from the blast of heat flooding towards us.
"Woah," I cried out, blinking rapidly as the flames died down.
I heard both Grandpa and Casimir mutter something in Terrarish, I'm sure, not appreciating Azar's reckless display of power.
The fier elemental walked back to the bonfire, staring deep into its flames. I could hear him muttering something, but the words seemed different than his normal Terrarish, sharper, even more foreign. I gasped slightly as he stuck his arms deep into the flames, pulling out a small bird made entirely of fire. It was beautiful, with eyes that looked like jewels and plumes of fiery-looking feathers in yellow, orange, and red. It tilted its head as it looked over at us, hopping up Azar's arm to sit on his shoulder. The fier elemental strolled over to us, his hands stuffed in his pockets.
"Ta-dah," he said, smirking lightly.
"He's so pretty!" I cooed, standing up from my chair. The bird squawked loudly, raising its wings. I could feel a wave of hot air coming from its direction.
"Sirin is a she," Azar corrected.
"Oh, how do you know?" I asked, curious.
"I know," he answered flatly. The bird jumped closer to Azar, nipping at his ear. He cursed loudly, glaring over at his summon. "Is that necessary?"
Sirin screeched in response and I covered my ears slightly. The firebird began chirping out a melody, hopping as it sang.
"Aww," I cooed, watching its little dance. "I'm guessing I can't pet her."
"Ah, not unless you like second-degree burns," Casimir replied, standing next to me. He was admiring the summon as well, and I wondered if he had seen it up close before.
"One second," Azar responded, raising his finger for a moment. Sirin hopped onto his finger and Azar pulled the bird close to him, kissing the side of its face. The summon changed from a vivid array of red, orange, and yellow to shocking pink. Azar reached over, placing the summon in front of me. I froze, afraid of being burned but found a gentle warmth coming from the bird instead. I raised my hand hesitantly, glancing at Azar curiously.
"It's fine, pet her," he assured me.
I was slightly unconvinced, seeing as I just saw the bird nipping at its master not but a few minutes ago, but I reached out nonetheless. I stroked the firebird's chest softly, amazed at the warmth I felt; like I was touching a perfectly heated mug of coffee. The firebird's feathers felt silky soft against my skin and I shivered slightly.
"She's so warm," I mouthed, afraid of startling the bird.
"Oh, I wanna pet," Maayan said, reaching over to join me. I glanced over at Casimir and Grandfather, both keeping their hands to themselves.
"Have you felt Sirin before?" I asked, glancing at the pair.
"Ah, no," Casimir admitted, shaking his head. Grandfather joined his head shake, smiling softly.
"Sirin isn't a fan of other men," Grandpa commented. "Even in protection mode."
"Protection mode?" I queried, glancing back at the firebird. I couldn't stop touching her velvety smooth feathers, but Sirin didn't seem to mind, cooing as I stroked. She hopped off Azar's finger, floating softly over to my shoulder. I stiffened slightly, afraid of upsetting the bird. "What's she doing?"
"She likes you," Azar said simply.
"That's good Diana!" Maayan cried out, clapping their hands together.
Sirin began rubbing her face and beak under my chin and along my neck, burying herself in my hair. I laughed because it tickled, and I enjoyed the warmth.
"She's better than any scarf," I commented. "So why is this good? I mean besides the obvious neck-warming going on."
"It means Azar can protect you better," Grandpa explained. "Pink flames will never burn the magic user's cherished loved ones."
I looked over at the fier elemental, gasping in an exaggerated fashion. "Whaaaat? Does that mean you love me, Azar?"
He groaned slightly, rubbing his hand into his face. "Why did you have to tell her that?"
I grinned as I looked over at Maayan, enjoying that I could tease him. "He loves me."
"I love you too!"
"Aww, thank you," I said, reaching over to hug the lunar fairy. "I love you also."
Sirin cooed and hopped from my shoulder to Maayan, rubbing excitedly against their face.
"Azar loves Maya as well it seems," I giggled.
"Okay, firebird is going bye-bye," Azar grumbled, snapping his fingers. Maayan and I both protested as the flaming pink bird flew back to its master, returning to its normal red coloring. Azar gave what I could only assume was the dismissal command and Sirin vanished in a puff of smoke.
"So was that Sirin's normal size or...?"
"Not even close," Azar replied with a shake of his head.
"Still impressive," I said with a slight shrug. "Thanks, Azar."
The fier elemental returned my shrug, but I could tell he was pleased. We all settled into our seats, to gaze up at the emerging stars while enjoying the warmth of the bonfire. Grandpa volunteered to refill our cider mugs as Azar lit another okashi, this one smelt of pumpkin spice. I was debating on spreading out my blanket on the grass, for better stargazing when I glanced over at Casimir, who was staring intensely into the fire.
I leaned over to him, whispering slightly. "Sorry, you didn't get to show off too."
"Oh, that's fine," Casimir responded with a wry smile. "My powers are more suited towards battle, they don't make a very interesting show."
"So you can't summon anything? I mean, besides the sun sword."
"Ah, no, sorry," he said with a shake of the head. "No cute animal Summons for me."
"Any un-cute animal ones?" I joked.
He laughed at my comment, rubbing at his head. "Well, I can summon a special shield in battle," he admitted.
"Oh, that sounds cool."
"But it's not what you would really call a Summon. It's more like a spell that brings an item into being," he added. "But I can't cast the spell here on Earth."
"Oh?" I asked, curious.
He smiled softly, glancing up at the stars as he responded. "There isn't enough magic here, no connection to the gods."
I wondered what he meant by that, but was distracted as Grandfather returned with our drinks. The conversation changed to more mundane subjects as we pointed out constellations and enjoyed each other's company late into the night.
