Nith couldn't believe his eyes. It had been long, too long. And now she was here, in front of him. With a smile on her red lips that revealed the small dimple in her right cheek and enhanced her chin cleft. Her ocean-blue eyes sparkled in the evening light. Shining and shimmering and real.
Real.
Not a dream that he would wake up from because of his damned alarm clock.
His eyes wavered, taking her in. He opened his mouth but then closed it. Nith didn't know what to say, what he could say. There was so much he wanted to tell her! About college, about SAP, about his house near the beach where he kept a guest room just for her. About Happy and Jay and about himself.
But he also wanted to know about her.
How was she? How was life treating her? Was she happy? Has she eaten lunch yet? Why was her hair so short? Did she like short hair now? What’s with that giant straw hat? What was she doing at Rens? Was she here for a shoot? Why was she alone without a bodyguard? Did she remember this place like him?
His hand clasped and unclasped as his thoughts raced inside his head. Until he realized he didn’t know himself what he wanted to do. Should he hug her? Or should he shake her hand? Were they still best friends enough to do their secret hand gesture?
But his mind drew blank as he stared at her smile. All those nights of lying awake in his bed, planning and drafting his thoughts, only for him to know nothing in front of her. Unable to talk, unable to move, addled by himself. And in that moment, Nith realized that none of those answers matter. He was just happy to be here, seeing her smile.
Though between the two of them, it was Kate who was always in charge of the saying and doing. Nith would stay behind her shadow like a Tariaksuq, following her around.
So, being as lost as Nith was, he did the only thing he could think of whenever he would found himself in these types of situations. He raked his hand through his hair.
Kate’s smile instantly widened. "You still do that."
It was a smile he had seen a thousand times. A smile that had been directed at him more times than Nith could count; a smile reserved only for those closest to her. Her lips would curve a bit more on the right than they would on the left. Kate had a cleft chin, and it would only show up when she would smile like that, along with the tiny dimple on her right cheek. This was the smile that made him fall in love with her.
The very aura that surrounded her. Bright and warm.
He fell in love with her because it was her.
How could he not?
"Oh," her tone faltered, accompanied by her smile. "I didn't know you were with someone."
"What?" His brows frowned as he followed her gaze. Nith turned slightly, looking over his shoulder. A bit of laughter escaped from him when he found Lily staring at them, coffee and laptop in hand, with her mouth wide open.
Both of the girls looked at him with confounded expressions.
Nith shook his head, swiping his hair away from his eyes. He really needed a trim. He looked back at the blonde, a smile tugging at his lips. "No ... no, this is Lily Azure," - pointing at the short-haired brunette - "she is my manager."
Lily, with much difficulty, tore her eyes off Kate. She glanced at Nith, blinking before placing her stare back on the blonde, giving her a quick nod.
"I'm Nithan's … manager?" Lily's tone made it into a question.
"I love you."
For a split second, Nith thought it was him who had blurted out the cursed line. His green eyes widened in fear, darting back and forth between Kate and the exit. His heart was ready to bust out of his chest. Ready to run away and leave the country if it meant she would be unheard of those words. His hand over his mouth when he realized Kate’s eyes were not on him but looking behind him.
It was Lily who had said it.
He did a double take before focusing on Lily's face, who had her eyes shut, and lips pressed together like an iron gate. Her face was in a color he had never seen before. Red. He had never seen her in blushing red. Tomato red.
Jay would have enjoyed this so much.
The server next to them was just as shocked.
Kate nodded, head tilted down to hide her smile under her hat.
"I ..." Lily looked at Nith for help. The author stood there, just as confused. "I didn't … mean it like that. I mean I do love you just not love you like that way. I am just really glad to meet you is what I meant …" Lily finished lamely.
Kate waved her hand. "It's ok." Her eyebrows raised high, almost touching her hairline as she smiled at Nith. "I get it. I'm glad to meet you too."
Lily snorted, loud and unwanted. Nith’s jaw parted as he looked at the short brunette. This was a side of her Nith had never seen. Shaking her head, she dumped the coffee and the laptop on the other table before putting her hand on her heart. "I'm more. I get to meet Kate Aurum! Owner of the prettiest blue eyes in Troy ever!" she almost yelled, stopping herself in the middle of it.
"Thank you. But so is yours. The perfect shade of azure."
Lily giggled. She literally giggled.
If Jay was here, he would have fainted by now. They had known Lily for eight years. In that time, they had never seen her like this, so 'not in control', so much in adoration. Never giggling with a red blush across her face.
Jay was surely missing out.
“You are like an angel!”
Jay really was.
"Please sit, so that I can stop myself from talking."
Kate laughed. Nith glanced back at her, his lips forming into a lopsided smile on its own. He had missed the sound of her laughter. The way her body swayed toward him as she laughed. His heart drummed inside.
He missed Kate.
She tugged his sleeve. "Can I join you guys then?"
He really did.
In the next few seconds, they all moved to the table next to Nith's. The server silently cleaned the spilled coffee from the floor as the trio settled at their new table. Kate took the middle seat. Nith sat next to her as Lily chose the chair opposite of Kate for a better ‘view’.
"What are you doing in Rens? Is the shooting for Cat-Woman 4 done?" Lily leaned in to listen.
Kate smiled, "No. I'm actually here to meet the directors and producers for another project. They want to cast me in a book adaptation. I'm here for that." Her eyes flickered on Nith briefly before returning to Lily's. "I will be flying back tomorrow, to La-Luna, to finish the rest of Cat-Woman."
"Did you cut your hair for the new project? Or for Cat-Woman? "
"Kind of." Kate tugged the small strand of hair, pushing it behind her ear. It was cut short, the edges ghosted over her bare shoulder. "The constant bleaching was killing it. So chopped it off. We are doing the rest of the filming with a wig." Kate leaned in, motioning Lily to come closer. Her eyes sparkled with mischief. "You can’t tell that to anyone," her voice low, as if she was telling them state secrets. Lily, hesitant but nodded slowly. Nith blinked. "It’s a secret," she whispered, with a wink.
The server came back for their order.
Her demure changed instantly, the spark in her eyes and the smirk in her lips gone as if they were never there. ‘Wow,’ Lily mouthed to Nith."Can you bring Olie? Tell him Aurum is here," she told him.
The server nodded before heading off.
"How do you know Nith?" Lily shrugged when Nith glared at her. "I’m curious!"
Kate glanced at him, waiting to hear his answer. "We are both from Vlomot," Nith said to Lily.
Kate arched her perfectly trimmed eyebrow. "Yeah," - she looked back at Lily - "went to the same school and all."
Lily sat straight, a posture that Nith knew meant trouble.
A different server came this time, stopping Lily from asking any more questions.
"Miss. Kate, should I get the usual?"
Kate nodded. "Also, can you make sure that your friend from before doesn’t tell or post on social media?" Handing him a 500 bronza note, she continued, "For both of you." Kate smiled, friendly. “And my friends will have another serving of what they were having before. That’s all Olie."
The server closed his notepad, inclined his head before leaving with a smile.
"You come here often?" Again it was Lily with the questions as if possessed by Rina’s ghost.
The waiter came back immediately, placing their cups of coffee in front of them. Plates with slices of chocolate cake and tarts.
"Whenever I'm in Rens. They have the best cakes in the capital." Kate smiled at Nith.
"Nith insists on coming here every time we are in the capital, too. Even though he only gets the black coffee."
"Really?" Their eyes met for a second. "So, what are you guys doing here? I heard from my mother that you are a writer now."
Nith opened his mouth to answer, but Lily was already on it. "Yeah, and a good one."
Nith shrugged, awkwardly.
"That's good," Kate sounded a bit embarrassed, "I don't really get any time to read, so I have no idea of how good you are."
"He's really good. We are actually here 'cause he is that good." Lily, it seemed, was trying her best to fill in for Jay today. "Nith is having a book signing tomorrow at the National Library," the brunette sounded way too smug. "For the third time."
Kate nodded, taking a sip from her cup. "Wait, you are the reason the library is closed today?"
"That's him!" Lily's phone rang. She slid the chair back, getting up. "Excuse me, guys," she said, leaving the two alone.
"So -" Kate shifted her chair toward him. "Mr. Famous Writer, huh?"
"Not that famous."
"And he talks!" Kate exclaimed. Heat rose to his ear, turning them pink. "Here, I thought you had taken a Mauna," she teased him.
"You always talked enough for the both of us."
"True, true." She played with the piece of cake on her plate. "So tell me about the book that you are signing tomorrow. What is it about?"
