As you see from the name, Disney has been making some crappy decisions. Today, I am going to be talking about four things. Today, we'll talk about Elemental, The Little Mermaid reboot, and the possibility of a Bambi reboot and a Snow White reboot. Please keep in mind that a lot of these things, unless specified, are my opinions, and my insight. Now, let's get into Elemental.
ELEMENTAL IS BLAND? When I heard about Elemental and saw snippets of the trailer on Disney+, it looked cute! I thought it would be fun, but soon I saw the angry YouTube videos popping out of the void like daisies. But, what is Elemental? Well, Elemental is one of Disney's latest films, released on June 16 of this year. Now, I am very confused about this one. I looked at a few articles and videos about Elemental, and I couldn't find in the videos or docs what exactly was wrong with Elemental. However, I went onto ITM.net, also known as Inside The Magic to find the reason why. And to be honest, the reason (in my opinion) is slightly strange to me. Listen to this;
"Mostly, (why people hate it) it's because the movie is apparently indicating a worrying trend of what individuals are calling 'bland' and 'boring' animation that's starting to get a little too formulaic for the historically groundbreaking studio. With a new trailer just released on March 28, Elemental has been slowly garnering quite a few negative takes from members of the public. A common refrain is that the new trailer showcases a movie that appears far too 'generic' and bland- and coming from genre-defining Pixar that's a serious step-down. As user KJohann61 comments, this new Pixar theatrical release is looking like 'the most... played out' trope.".
As I was writing this, I watched the trailer. And personally? I've had boiled chicken that had more flavor. It doesn't look bad, and the concept is cute. But it seems like Disney has been making some... choices lately, and they're taking their anger out on Elemental. I can't imagine how awful the writers and animators feel.
THE LITTLE CONTROVERSY Again, when I heard the news of a live-action Little Mermaid, I thought it would be cute! I've seen people do fan casting for Ariel, and they cast people like Zendaya and Katherine McNamara. I didn't do any fan casting, but I still thought it would be fun. But when I saw all the videos about how they made Ariel a "powerful" role model, I became extremely confused. So, let's talk about it. So first of all, in my opinion, the people at Disney are making anthills into giant, erupting volcanoes. Specifically, when it comes to Ariel's wish to become human, and the song "Kiss The Girl". Now, you might be like, "Who could hate Kiss The Girl?". Well, Disney, I guess. They said the song "doesn't respect consent.". Even though Ariel is clearly as infatuated with Eric as he is with her. So they introduced amnesia into Ursula's contract. So if you don't know, in the original film, Ursula gave Ariel legs in exchange for her voice. So she was human but mute. But now, Ursula is just unfair. In the 2023 film, Ariel gets amnesia whenever kissing is even mentioned anywhere. So every time Eric asks for consent, she forgets what they were talking about, and backs away when he goes in for a smooch. At least he asks her first... But the funny thing is, Disney said they were worried about Eric forcing himself upon Ariel, even though in the 80s film, it was kinda the other way around. He was hesitant to kiss her, though she was super into him. And more about her wishes to visit the land. In the original, she simply wants to experience human things. In this, she is SO into Eric that she decides to go to land just to vibe with him. That is all I need and want to say... Now, Ariel has always been a role model to young girls, so I don't get why they absolutely needed to make Ariel the strong hashtag girl boss character, and Eric was the helpless damoiseau in distress. But other than that, the SFX were good I guess. But that was one, if not the only redeeming factor. It feels like one of those awful movies that have big names in it just to get it in the spotlight. However, Halle Bailey has a lovely voice. I'll give her that.
BAMBI AND SNOW WHITE REBOOTS? Now, there's not much information on the Bambi thing, but there is a bit on Snow White. According to Google, It's a 2024 release starring Rachel Zegler as Snow and Gal Gadot as Queen Clementianna. I don't know who that is, but I'm sure she is very evil. Like the fruits of the devil. Comment if you get that reference, haha! Back to Snow White. Again, they feel the need to make Snow a badass, even though she wasn't that type of character in the first place. Ms. Zegler even specified that "Love isn't even on her mind in this movie". Now I and a lot of other critics and YouTubers think that you cannot judge an unreleased movie, just how like you cannot judge a book by its cover. So I will save my critique for next year. Same with Bambi, but I don't think we are gonna get a Bambi film because I couldn't even find a title card online, though I could with Snow White. And I know I said it's unfair to judge an unreleased film, but based on She-Hulk, Elemental, and The Little Mermaid, I don't think it will be up to everyone's standards, which are now incredibly low anyways because of the media I just listed. But at the same time, I would love to see a live-action version of Bambi! Like, I love those little felt toys of deer, so seeing that on the big screen? Yes, please. So my final thoughts on this part? Only time will tell. See y'all in 2024.
