"Glass has found someone to talk to." Sophie jabbed at him from behind. "Nice to see you here in school, Mr. Voigt."
Eldric reacted with a wry smirk.
"I never thought geniuses slept in class." Sophie laughed
"They do, and you will see it often." They were all going to the classroom together.
"Can you tell me what the next class is?" Sophie questioned him mockingly. Eldric didn't like the question, but it perplexed him when he heard it.
"So, did you hear us arguing?" Eldric is attempting to figure out what occurred the past time when he has no idea.
Sophie was staring at him. Evert remained close behind, listening in on their chats. "You irritated Mr. Hass when he suggested Jews are monsters. Outside was how you spent your first day in school."
Eldric drew his chin in. When Sophie and Evert left for class, he swelled his chest and came to a halt.
"I am crazy." He spoke something to himself that was barely audible.
"Huh? Have you said anything?" Sophie had most likely heard that.
"Ah! noh! nothing." Eldric managed to flee.
"Whatever it is, whatever it is." It took a lot of courage for you not to be a coward." Sophie remained by his side. "People should not be too quick to judge."
"That is correct. Saying someone was a monster was just too dramatic. It was good to see you standing up to it." Evert followed them.
Eldric kept his gaze on them while they muttered. He could see he had grown in confidence.
"I'm not sure where to begin with this class, dear folks." Students saw Mr. Hass was in a pleasant mood this time. They were all looking forward to a lovely celebration with Eldric and Mr. Hass. Mr. Hass, on the other hand, was aware of Eldric's presence and disregarded him from the moment he entered the classroom. If something went wrong this time, Eldric practised expressing sorry to himself. Mr. Hass had something more intriguing to do than deal with him.
Mr. Hass had brought a map. He untied the knot and hung it up, concealing the chalkboard behind it. The map had been tampered with since Eldric last viewed it. He acquired it two years ago, when the Nazis proclaimed the French border annexed. He even gave it the title "Denkmal des Sieges." He initially showed Eldric's old batch his new map. Eldric remembers how happy he was when he drew a bright red line into the French border and expanded wherever he felt bold enough. "It was a tribute to 'our Wolf,'" he'd remark, flexing his little moustache. However, he was never a fan of this style.
Within a year, Denkmal des Sieges was worn. Mr. Hass was clearly excited to unveil something when he opened the map, but it didn't appear to be anything. The red line had been white-flued. Mr. Hass had to even chop a pie off his border. Eldric spotted more red lines than he had the last time, but everything had been shoved to the side to disappear.
Mr. Hass unlidded the marker and began to draw a line into Belgium. Eldric's pupils constricted.
"Folks, it will be our new homeland!" Mr. Hass said. Then he began the lecture by going through every detail he heard on the radio. Mr. Hass yelled, "Hail Wolf!" and the class concluded.
"HAIL WOLF!" everyone exclaimed, lifting their right hand and five fingers high above.
Eldric's school day finished early, and he waited for Sascha to join him at home.
"Greetings, Eldric!" Sophie caught him from behind once more. "I see you can adapt very quickly."
"There was no other option." Eldric instead followed Sophie down the trail.
"It's fun, isn't it, conquering the land?" Sophie began to strike up a conversation. "Standing aside with a dominant position, not caring about how weak others are." That's how we transform into wolves, and they claim everything we do, we do for people."
Eldric was surprised to hear this from a little girl. "You do want to be a Wolf, right?" Eldric inquired. "But you sound a little different."
"I am, yes," Sophie said boldly. "That's because if given the chance, I'll be a different Wolf." I'll do it for people, not for land. What do you think, what type of Wolf do you wish to be?"
"Umm… "I was not expecting this question." Eldric let out a sigh. "I'm not sure what kind of Wolf people expect from me now that they've taken away my dreams."
