Make the bed, put away the toys, sweep the house, wash the dishes, take out the garbage, etc. It's simple tasks they can perform.
Why? I grew up almost without being required to do anything other than study, it made me feel like I was useless. A good-for-nothing.
My mother didn't mean it, she just wanted me to focus on my studies. It was an attempt to spare me the exhaustion of studying and working at the same time, something she suffered in her teenage years.
But the message my brain received was: "you suck, you don't know how to do anything, so study to compensate."
A problem worse than lack of communication is failure in it. You can say something with the best of intentions, but the person may end up getting it all wrong.
Word of advice: think carefully before speaking, be clear. Avoid being vague, this can lead to many misunderstandings.
If the other person did not understand, use some of your patience to repeat or explain in a simpler way.
