Hana: "Sayucchi, let's go to the rooftop!" The girls were chilling on the couch, daddling on their phones.
Sayuri: "Why that all of a sudden?" She didn't even turn around.
Hana: "Because I say so!" She grinned, jumped from the sofa and tried to pull her friend along.
Sayuri: "It's dark already." She tried not to drop her phone while clinging to the couch. "Kira, help meee", she begged jokingly.
Hana: "No, Kira, help me!"
The girl with the two pink twin braids used her tang and lifted up both of her roommates in the air leaving them floating next to her for a while before placing them properly sitting on the sofa, their phones laying neatly on the table in front of them.
Kira: "You probably won't reach Vincent anytime soon … you really should divert yourself a bit." She smiled and stopped floating. Gently grabbing Sayuri by her shoulders and with an affirmative nodding she said: "Let's go."
Sayuri: "Alright, alright." She sighed and got up. //Since when am I persuaded that easily?// She doubted herself. Maybe she should strengthen her seclusion? But if her two new friends suggested it to her, why not? The girl thought back to her two friends she had to leave behind in her hometown. She always went along with what they suggested for activities. But Sayuri had to tell them she had to switch to a private school, because her parents found that the public one isn't good enough anymore. Since her father was a strict parent as well as a lawyer, this excuse didn't sound too far-fetched. She shook her head. This really wasn't the time to ponder about this topic now.
When they opened the door to the school roof, a fresh breeze played with their hair and a warm voice welcomed them.
Toki: "There you are!" He smiled.
Sayuri: "Toki? Why are you here as well?"
Toki: "Hana, didn't you tell her?"
Hana: "I thought it would be harder to convince her then." She stuck out her tongue.
Toki: "That doesn't make sense …" He raised an eyebrow.
Hana: "Oh it does, baka!"
Sayuri: "You guys planned this? What are you plotting?" She skeptically moved her eyes from one side to another.
Hana: "Aw, come on, Sayurin, don't you trust us at all?" She grinned. "We're sharing a secret now. But this makes you sad. So we thought of overwriting our group with a better memory!" She took her favorite girl's hands and pulled her along to the other side.
When they got around the corner Sayuri's eyes grew wide. They had prepared a beautiful setting for her. Small glass vessels were floating calmly in the air, shimmering with blue-toned light that occasionally was flickering a bit. On the ground a big blanket and a basket filled with sweets.
Sayuri: "Guys … you … did this just for … me?" She was really moved. Never had anyone done something like this for the girl.
Hana: "Mhm! I'll give you three guesses, whose idea it was!" She proudly placed her fists on her waist.
Kira: "We wanted to light and lift up your mood." She smiled kindly.
Toki: "I am responsible for the light part!"
Sayuri: "I could have guessed that much." She giggled.
Toki: "Well, yeah …" He pouted.
Hana: "Tokkun, you just can't impress my Sayurin that easily!" She laughed.
Toki: "That wasn't even my intention!" He softly boxed her on her arm.
Hana: "Then why are you blushing?!" She boxed him back with a huge grin.
Toki: "Oh, come one, you- !" He started running after her with both of them laughing and fooling around.
Kira: "I guess, now is the best time to eat up all the sweets." She sat down on the blanket and ate some jelly cherries.
Sayuri: "You're right!" She joined Kira and started eating a cupcake. "Where did you get this? It tastes sooo good!"
Kira: "I baked them."
Sayuri: "Really? Wow! All I can do with food is eat." She laughed. "Thank you so much."
Kira: "There's no need to thank me for anything." Her smile was so warm.
Sayuri: "Yes, there is! You always seem to find the right words. I was so confused and didn't know what to say. Hana and Toki were kinda emotional, too, but you were rational and stayed calm. A considerate person like you would help even a person like Vincent, yet you don't even know him."
Kira winced for a fraction of a second.
Kira: "I … think it's just the core of my personality." Now her smile gave off a rather sad aura. But only for the blink of an eye. Just the next moment she was smiling again like always. "Anyway, this evening is just about you! We want you to enjoy your time at this school at least a bit."
Sayuri: "Well, it's worse than what I'd hoped for, but way better than I expected – thanks to you guys!" Sayuri looked at the starry sky above her. Maybe … no, surely this had to have a purpose somewhere along the line. She just had to believe it.
Hana: "Why can't you catch me? Do you even try?" She grinned and laughed while running away from Toki, just towards the other two.
Toki: "I'm just letting you win, but if you insist …" He launched into a jump, ready to finally catch the tiny blonde girl. But Hana just waited until he was just about to reach her and went a big step aside.
Hana: "Baka."
Toki couldn't stop anymore, so he just fell down, throwing some curses at Hana, while she was just laughing even more. But at least he landed softly.
Hana: "Now we're all properly seated for our cockaigne dinner."
Kira couldn't help but try to cover her exhilarated face behind her hand. Hana just started stuffing herself with the sweets like there's no tomorrow. Toki yet tried to comprehend the situation and Sayuri … was so embarrassed she couldn't even say a word. When Hana had made the step aside she was right in front of the black haired girl and the boy didn't have a choice but to push her over. As Toki raised his head, not much space was left between his and Sayuri's startled tomato red face.
Toki: "S-sorry! This wasn't – !" Before he tried talking any further, he distanced himself, nervously scratching his own head while looking anywhere but in her eyes.
Sayuri: "Y-yeah. I know …" She mumbled. Toki's light gray eyes had been gleaming from the moonlight they were reflecting. His confused face had just been too cute. On the one hand, she was happy he now avoided eye contact, because she couldn't handle this almost magical sight, on the other hand, she had loved to explore the boy's irises a little longer. //What am I even thinking?!// She shook her head and sat down properly. "Now that we're all sitting here, thank you so much again. I really don't know what to say."
Hana: "You said thank you, so I'd say that's enough!" The girl grinned. "Seeing you cheered up and relaxed is all we wanted."
To Sayuri that felt so surreal. How did she deserve all this kindness? She didn't do anything special for them, she didn't have anything to offer in return. Maybe normal people just behaved like that? But … them … normal? Well, this could also be the reason. They must have enjoyed Sayuri's ordinary self. But, whatever the reason, this wasn't important right now. Sayuri had to turn her head off and just have some fun for once. Casually talking with those supernatural human beings she almost might call friends?!
They kept talking, eating sweets and having fun for so long … the group of 4 totally forgot the time. Until the rooftop door opened with a squealing sound. The teens immediately went silent.
Toki: "Shit, who's this?" He was whispering and turned off his light vessels.
Kira: "Probably the janitor or a teacher?" She also had her voice down.
Hana: "We should hide!"
Sayuri didn't really understand what was going on. Was it not allowed to be here? Would they get in trouble now? But slowpoke as always she missed the moment. Kira floated out of sight and the other two ran away. But where to? Her orientation skill was in the negatives. Any moment the inspecting person would come around and catch her.
But it was someone else just grabbing her wrist gently, pulling her with him. Toki had come back to get her. She was relieved.
Hana: "Come here, get in." In the semi-darkness she waved them to come over. She hid in a dark corner, Sayuri couldn't really make out what it was, but the three squeezed inside there.
Some mumbling and steps were audible, but after some time the door to the roof was closed again. The three still didn't dare to come out of their hiding. But Kira came back and ensured the danger was gone. With a relieving sigh for all of them they came forth.
Sayuri: "What was that just now? Are we here without permission?"
Toki: "Well … it's not that it's prohibited, but …"
Hana: "Yeah, it's not very well-received being here after the regular school hours."
Toki: "But when I look at the dawning sky, we've been here for so long, it might already count as official school time again." He laughed.
Sayuri: "I see. That reminds me, don't you have class soon, Toki?"
Toki: "Oh, shit. Totally forgot about that, haha. I should get going then." He started to walk towards the exit.
Kira: "We should take our leave as well."
Sayuri was following her friends, but was automatically drawn in the opposite direction. She went to the fence, where the sun just rose its head above the clouds. She called for the others to come back to her. The black haired girl didn't have to tell them twice.
Sayuri: "Guys, look at that … it's just beautiful." //Usually I only see sunsets.//
Kira: "Wonderful indeed."
Hana: "Good to have your amazing sense of aesthetics so we didn't miss this!" Giggling, she jumped at her friend from behind.
Toki: "That's what I'm always talking about!"
Sayuri remembered when Toki had suggested visiting the rooftop some time ago. Now she definitely knew why. Together they looked towards the horizon enjoying this magical moment, in which the rising sun left a pretty play of colors reflecting upon these four students connecting them while they gazed at the town's silhouette in the distance. Without a doubt Sayuri would always remember this time when her heart felt warm. If only more moments like this would lay ahead of them …
