Sophie and Maria were sitting on the couch together, hands on top of each other, while Diane and Lucille sat in separate chairs across from them. The two young girls were anxious while the two mothers sat back, worried what this was about.
“Mom,” Sophie said.
“Mama,” Maria acknowledged.
“We’ve got you both here because there’s something we want to tell you.”
Sophie paused for a second for Diane to raise an eyebrow and Lucille to look like she was going to have a panic attack. Maria continued.
“We wanted to tell you… we’re gay and love each other a lot.”
Maria stopped and took off her brown sweater, revealing the rainbow one underneath, then pulled Sophie in close. The two then intertwined their hands and looked at their mothers with pleading eyes.
Lucille was breathing deeply in and out like she was going into cardiac arrest. Diane leaned forward and took a deep breath.
“Are you two sure you want this?” she asked. “Absolutely sure this is who you two are and what to be?”
“Yes mom,” Sophie said, wearing a warm smile on her face that Diane hadn’t seen very often. “This is definitely who I am, and who we are.”
“And Mama,” Maria said, looking worried. “I know you may not like this, but please don’t separate us.”
“Baby…” Lucille looked trapped, lost, and conflicted about it all. “Baby, does she make you happy?”
“Happier than anyone else, Mama.” she said, not hesitating.
“Then… as long as you're happy…” Lucille leaned forward and threw her arms around both girls and started crying. “Even my little angel can be gay!”
Diane put her hand on Lucille’s shoulder and took her out of the living room. When they were finally alone, Sophie and Maria giggled.
“Your mom took that well,” said Sophie.
“Mama will come around.”
“You’re too cute to not want to please.” Sophie laughed, tapping Maria on the nose.
“Don’t tease me, Phie,” blushed Maria. “It’s not nice to do it during the holidays.”
“I’m not teasing.”
Sophie leaned in, and the two teenage girls shared a first kiss on the lips together. It seemed to last an eternity, and when they pulled away, Maria was an even deeper red.
“Gosh… I think Christmas came early…”
“I can make it come again.” Sophie giggled, giving Maria a barrage of kissy pecks on the cheek while Maria laughed and tried to push her away.
