I've been with my apparently new family for about a month. And let me just say all of you out there who cannot recall being an infant are extremely lucky. Good Lord, being a baby is embarrassing. I never considered being able to feed myself and use a toilet to be luxuries, but I sure do now! And walking! How glorious it was to be able to walk from one end of the room to the other! How long does it take for babies to learn to walk? Like 10 months? I'd even take crawling at this point! Hopefully I'll be able to do that sooner. At the moment, I could only wiggle around. Oh and teeth! I always took my teeth for granted, and that will certainly never happen again! I really would like to be able to eat solid food. My current eating situation is, uh, less than desirable. It will probably be a while before I can have a real meal, I imagine I'll be starting with baby food. Though at the moment, mushy peas and carrots sound absolutely delicious. Thankfully, the food of this world seems similar to that of my old world. And yes, I have determined that this is a different world than mine. The first giveaway was the colorful hair and eyes of the people around me. My new family for one, and the neighbors I've seen in the short walks I've been taken on. There's a woman across the street with lavender eyes, and a kid next door with pale pink curls. The second giveaway was the magic. I first witnessed it when my new father conjured up water out of thin air. One of the boys had managed to set his toast on fire, and Terron quickly doused it with a bit of water. I could quite comprehend what I was seeing. Surely there has to be a container of water I hadn't seen. It goes against the laws of physics to create something out of nothing! But I guess this world has its own laws of physics. Just a few days after the toast incident, Dalla wrapped me in a sling and took me to the market. I gazed around, wide-eyed taking in all the new and unfamiliar foods. Most of the meals I'd seen my new family eat were somewhat similar to Earth food. Grains, bread, vegetables, and meat all made regular appearances, and barely differed from Earth meals once everything was cut up and cooked together. But here at the market, I had the opportunity to see ingredients and their raw forms. The market contained a diverse range of vendors, selling a diverse range of foods. There were yellow fruits resembling strawberries and purple ones that looked like little melons. There were long, thin potatoes of some sort and what appeared to be giant onions. There was a fish with sparkly green scales and unfamiliar cuts of meat. The breads looked like the ones I knew, but came in many bright colors. Most of the eggs I saw were small and speckled, like quail eggs. Some vendors sold household goods, such as cloth and candles. Such goods looked like the ones from my first life, with some unique designs and patterns. Dalla went from stall to stall, filling her basket with a wide variety of foodstuffs. I was introduced to each vendor, all of whom smiled and cooed at me. This grew quite tedious, as many of them spoke to me in nonsensical baby talk. For goodness sake, just speak normally! I can understand you just fine, thank you very much! Which was strange in and of itself, as I'd been able to understand the language spoken here from the day I was reborn. I don't think that was normal here, as no one spoke to me as if I could understand them. I'd think it impossible with the brain of an infant, but I quickly was becoming used to the impossible.
We left the market, heading to town square. "Before we head home, I want to show you something special." Dalla said to me. We headed to a town square where a group of people had gathered, forming a semi-circle around four people in colorful outfits. A man with bright yellow curls stepped forward. "My dear people! Thank you for coming today! I sincerely hope you will enjoy our performance. Get ready, and please, don't get too close!" He announced, with a wide grin. He rejoined his companions. They formed a circle, bowed, and began to dance around each other in circles. They put their hands out, and suddenly each dancer was surrounded by balls of fire. One had red fire, one had orange, one had yellow, and one had blue. As they moved around each other, their balls of fire intertwined, passing each other without ever touching. Suddenly they stopped and brought their hands together. The little fire balls each became one large ball, which they stretched out into a rope. The dancer spun the flaming ropes around themselves. Next, the fires became fan-shaped, and they performed a fan dance. Lastly, the four began to twirl, slowly raising their arms into the air. The fire followed suit, rising into towering columns that stretched into the sky. The fire spun along with the troupe. The four slowly came closer together, putting their arms out at an angle. The fire columns began to swirl together in a medley of colors. The fire wielders wiggled their fingers, and the fire dissolved into colorful sparks that rained over the audience. I was spellbound. Never in my life- or rather lives- had I ever seen something so beautiful. Curiosity exploded in my mind. How did they do that? Could anyone learn to do that, or was it something you were born with? What other types of magic were there? Was this even considered magic, or was it just the natural way of things? I longed to learn more. I couldn’t admit it to myself at the time, but I had found a passion. In my previous life, I had never been passionate about anything other than reading. But in this new life, I had found something I wanted to pursue in the real world.
