"Good morning." My voice was a bit rough while saying the first words of the day. Jasper nodded in response, having a sandwich stuffed into his mouth while he was looking at his phone.
We lived together for about three weeks, and I got used to sharing my space with him. Our dynamics strangely weren't that different. Usually, we saw each other in the morning, and then we would meet in the evening to have dinner. Jasper didn't go out that often. He still tries to work through the breakup with Lisa. Saying it was messy would be an understatement. He wasn't as angry as two weeks ago, yet I preferred him that way over the depressed self he was now. I would pay a lot to understand what was going on in his head. The only solution I saw was to let time pass.
"What are you watching?" I asked. After placing my bowl of oats in front of me on the table, I joined him for breakfast. Jasper looked up at me as he described briefly a guy who did vlogs from the coldest city in the world. I couldn't imagine myself in a place like that, yet living there. It was strangely interesting to hear about it.
"Do you think it's lonely to live there? When you go for a walk, you can literally die in a matter of minutes."
"I think people living there know how to dress for that type of weather." I smiled while analyzing Jasper's sad expression. He kept watching the video, but when I thought he wouldn't say anything, he just shrugged, saying I was right. Apparently, he saw it in a different video of his.
"Is he just visiting that place, or does he live there?" I leaned forward more, watching the vlogger on Jasper's phone.
"Local. That's why I follow this channel. This guy seems real, and he was born there, so everything he says must be a reality, not some stuff made up by a tourist for views." For the first time since I walked into the kitchen, Jasper shifted his attention from the screen to properly look at me.
I nodded, and we watched videos for another hour. I liked it. Even a lot. Some might say I was sentimental about this friendship. And maybe they would be correct, but was it wrong to enjoy these moments? One day we will devote this time to others in our lives. Towards family, work, or possibly moving to the other side of the country. Life has taught me to appreciate. We could lose what we care about overnight, and there is no way we can bring it back.
Jasper changed the clothes he wore in the morning to something more simple. I stood in the living room about to go study for a bit. It was my day off, and my classes got cancelled at the last minute. I had no plans, and I wanted to use this time wisely, but seeing Jasper ready for work gave me the idea to change the scenery.
"I will go with you to the cafe. Do you mind if I get dressed quickly? Wait a second." I got a strange look, but no remark followed, which I appreciated. In my room, I grabbed a backpack from my wardrobe, gathering what I needed, which were mostly notes and my laptop. Also, I didn't forget to change my joggers into something more presentable. I put on a simple sweatshirt and denim trousers that felt comfortable to study but still looked good. I wasn't sure how long I would be there and if I would stay long enough to open my books. Sighing loudly, I gave a last look over my bag and left my room to see Jasper waiting for me on the sofa.
"Finally," he said under his breath, locking his phone and putting it back into his pocket.
"What? I was quick." I grinned, locking the door behind us.
"Yes, you were." He let go of his breath in a weak chuckle. "Why do you want to go study there?"
"I can have a free coffee. With you there, unlimited resources." He raised an eyebrow at me, not buying my story at all.
"Uh-huh."
We got into my car, agreeing that I would come back to pick him up after his shift ended. I could already hear Jess teasing us about it. I wasn't sure what she found funny about us when we wrote down shopping lists or arranged cleaning days. It was cheaper and more convenient to cook or do chores together. She kept saying that she liked my "soft" side, whatever that meant. I only hoped that Beth was in today. She didn't care about any of this and whether Jessica couldn't go deeper into everyone's business.
"Are you going upstairs or staying downstairs?" Jasper asked me before leaving for the back of the shop to change into his uniform.
"Um, downstairs for now. Be fast as I want my coffee." I wiggled my eyebrows at him and walked away with a big smile on my face. He just shook his head and left. I knew he would be taking his sweet time to get out. Maybe I shouldn't tease him.
I looked around, noticing there weren't many people sitting on the ground floor. I could hear some voices and occasional laughs, but maybe I could get away with studying here. I was sure Jasper and Jess would find it suspicious, but I knew that guy always stays in the same corner, on the ground floor. I pulled out my laptop and books to do what I came here, but from time to time I couldn't help but scan the area.
"I wish you would tell me why you came here. It's so bizarre to see you in the cafe as a customer or freeloader." Jasper placed the coffee cup on the table.
"Thanks," I spoke. "I just didn't want to be alone at home. I won't stay long anyway."
"I'm not telling you to go. I just want to ... You know what? Whatever. If you want, you can tell me. If not, it's also fine." He pursued his lips just a bit but didn't really smile. "Let me know if you need more coffee."
"Sure. Thanks." He left, leaving me puzzled. Should I tell him or not? I couldn't make up my mind as it was a one-way road. Once he knew, he knew.
