I answered immediately, hesitation thrown right out of the window. "Of course! But why? Do you have some drama?" I would say slyly.
Mei took my tone seriously and backed off. "Woah...that's kinda creepy Ri-chan"
"You know what? That hurts Mei." I said pretending to be offended. "Here I was, just asking you a question." I'd continue, acting hurt.
"Sorry." Mei said, as she rolled her eyes. I guess she caught on. I followed her to our hiding spot, where we would go to together to skip boring classes. It was on a balcony outside. Yes that's right, our school had a balcony. It was connected to the gym's viewing area, which was above the gym floor. And while I say "hiding spot," all you really had to do, was to get some keys and open the door from the indoor balcony, and it would lead to the outside balcony. And there it was, our little safe place "inside" the school.
"So, why'd you want to skip today?" I asked her.
"..."
"Mei?"
Mei would sit down and motion for me to do the same. "So..." she would start.
I sat patiently waiting for her to continue.
"So what?"
Mei sighed and started talking. "Hey, do you remember that guy I had a crush on last year?" She would hurriedly say.
"Yeah?" I frowned, I knew where this was going. It happened all the time in my class, and people would celebrate, by screaming and shouting happily. The "lucky" person would be congratulated by their friends, and I would have to stand in the corner silently to avoid being caught up in it. Girls would giggle, boys would be jealous of the guy who got lucky to be able to date a girl.
"Well..." Mei would continue, stretching the word out.
"Yeah?" I would take a deep breath, ready to shout a congratulatory.
"..." Mei was silent for a bit. And she finally spoke.
"He's dating someone else."
"CONGRATULATIONS!!!"
It became silent. My slow brain tried to process what she said, while my arms where still in the air.
"Huh?!" I said loudly, cutting the silence with my exclamation.
"Yeah... he's dating someone." Mei said as she looked at me weirdly. "Why would you say 'Congratulations!!!' if my crush is dating someone else?"
"Huh? Wait no! I thought you were gonna say that you were dating him?!" I said quickly, trying to restore the once non-awkward vibe we had, before I has shouted.
"Yeah riiiight. I bet you were happy that I was single like you." Mei harshly replied.
"No! I wouldn't be jealous of you..." I said. "Just the guy who would be able to date you," I mumbled.
"What'd you say? Speak up, Ri, I'm not actually angry. Jeez..." Mei said worryingly.
"Ahaha! Just thinking that I wouldn't be jealous of you! Ya know, if anything I'd punch the guy you would be dating!" I blurted out, without thinking, quickly bringing my arms down, and making a, boxing pose with my arms out in front of me, my hands clenched into a fist, and punching the air in front of me.
"You'd what?! Ri you okay? Why would you punch them?" Mei said now, concerned for some imaginary guys, instead of me.
"Huh?! Well uh, like, I mean, men are cheaters right?! Haha..." I looked away my face bright red. Why the heck did I say that?! That was so awkward! Urghhhh
I heard a giggle behind me, which soon turned into a laugh. I turned to see Mei clutching her stomach, her head bowed as she laughed and laughed.
"Wh-what?! HAHA Ri what?! You-you sound like some angry father!!! HAHAGAHA!!" She would try to say, between breaths. As I looked at her, I felt a bubble of laughter ready to burst.
"Pfft-" I tried to hold my laughter.
"BAHAHA WHAT YOU SEE ME AS A FATHER?!" Instead, I started cry, laughing. Wow, I thought,
How much do I love her, to be able to laugh so freely with her?
“Hey, let’s try to stick together at least until the end of high school!”
You say that, but what if I want to stay with you forever?
