The next morning Greer woke up to her phone alarm going off. She nearly fell off the couch, forgetting she wasn’t in bed. Right… Last night. Lots of that special tea. But that didn’t change the fact she still had classes. Two papers due in a few days. There was a list of things to do and get done…
Greer held her Gran Gran’s quilt. She wanted to go home. She couldn’t pass college. She was a fraud. She wanted to go back and tell her Ma this was a bad idea. God she just wanted to be home and…. Suddenly she was on the couch, Gran Gran working on the quilt. Her parents sitting there confused. That’s right she had touched Blake last. Greer hadn’t expected to switch again so soon. Was this how it was for Blake? How did he get anything done…? She looked around and dealt with the chaos around her as everyone spoke at once. After a little bit it was calmer and she looked at them. “Yeah I’m powered… but you didn’t know anything other than this so I can’t tell you.” Before her parents could argue her GranGran came over and hugged her gently.
“Of course sweetie… come on. We have some pie still. You are home or have your own place now?”
“I’m in college…” The three were beaming.
“Sparkplug, you’re in college? Whatcha learning?”
“Um not sure I should say.”
“Oh it doesn’t matter! You made it to college! You must have worked hard.” Her mother hugged her.
“Yeah but… I’m not doing so hot right now…” Greer looked down. “I’m wasting your money.”
“Bah! Tiny tot you are not wasting our money. If you are working that hard then it is worth it. Even if you fail we will still be proud because you worked hard and did your best!”
“But-“
GranGran smiled warmly as she handed Greer some pie. “No buts… Hardly anyone in the family has made it to college. You making it there is a big accomplishment. Are you happy? Find some nice people there?” Greer looked at the pie and smiled.
“Yeah… real nice roommates… and I’m dating two great guys…” Her father frowned.
“Two? I don’t know about two. I’m not raising you to sleep around.”
“No dad it’s fine it’s a thing. Poly. They treat me good… like you treat Ma.” Her Ma smiled and set down a glass of milk.
“Well, we will need to meet and talk with these boys. Bring them for Thanksgiving.”
“God Ma! That’s like seeing if they can handle the heat by throwing them at a volcano!”
“Then the day before at least. You said two? I’ll have train money saved if needed. But we should meet these boys.”
“Are.. you sure I mean…?” Her Dad didn’t look thrilled but….
“If you’re dating I want to meet them. I need to make sure they’re good boys.” Oh… he must have trusted the local boys more than he should have. Or had private talks.
“Sure Dad. Just… lemme make sure I have them over at a chill time?”
“We’ll see…. Now… enjoy your pie and tell us what you feel alright tellin us.”
