Clovis tried to attend to the around fifty people that managed to get out, but many were malnourished, and many more had infected wounds. He tried to bandage up who he could and had those who were able to move, get water from a nearby well.
As Clovis attended to the sick, he kept glancing to the opening of the cave, waiting for her to return. Then at the entrance of the underground cave, Briar emerged. Bloodied and exhausted, she still stood beautiful to the freed individuals who basked in the sun. Each pair of eyes interpreted her differently, her image changing to fit their idea of beauty. Clovis quickly ran to her and asked for a favor, he asked her to grow specific kinds of herbs and vegetables. Briar said nothing and handed him the bag with her hair. She removed herself from the group to lay on the ground, her eyes grew heavy as she fell asleep atop the green plane.
Clovis was confused, but he figured that the bag of hair would be helpful because she is what she is, but the issue was how it was used. Clovis opened the bag and took out a single strand of long hair. He looked at it, thinking of how he would be able to grow the plant he was thinking of. Clovis began to ask around the freed captives, however, no one had an answer, but, the little girl that Clovis carried last, spoke as she touched the hair. She looked no older than seven, sunken cheeks, and all dry hair down to her waist, "Why not plant it in the ground?" The little girl's fingers felt the strand of glorious hair between her rough fingers. Clovis met her eyes and could see brilliant golden iris staring at him, almost demanding to drop the hair. She tied three strands in a braid and planted it upright, when nothing happened, her eyes lit up with an "Oh!" and she ran to a nearby puddle. Clovis could not understand where she pulled the energy to run. She cupped the water in her hands and dripped it over the hair, and as each drop came in contact, three flowers of wood sorrel began to sprout and braid into each other. By the end, three bushes emerged.
Clovis saw as the young girl took the flowers and began to chew on them and feed some to her brother. Clovis knelt beside her and asked how she knew. He smiled at her as he waited for a response. The young girl stroked her brother's hair as he nibbled on the flower, "Where we used to live, there are stories of a celestial who used her hair to grow fruit for those starving. She would tell the people to tie it any way they could and imagine what they wanted, and I wanted a wood sorrel." The girl looked at the man smiling down at her, even though she saw many with the same expression, this one was not meant to deceive her or saw her as livestock. Clovis gave the twins water and proceeded to walk toward an open space.
Clovis went to work, and within several minutes he had all the medicinal herbs he needed and a thin soup ready to boil. Several individuals help with the process but were still too weak to stand for large periods. When the broth was ready, Clovis passed it out to all. Everyone was grateful, they ate slowly, and little by little their color returned to their skin and their small cuts began to heal. Clovis saw as this happened and was slightly worried. What he concocted was something he had learned from his mother, and even if he knew it was effective on a strained body, he knew the effect did not occur this quickly.
Clovis led everyone into the inn and ensured the disassembled body room was closed off. As he gathered more people he was led to a worship circle. Their palms over their chest almost as if covering their heart, they sat and chanted 'Gratias tibi pro hoc miraculo', over and over. As Clovis approached, he saw the person in the middle. Surrounded is blooming glittering flowers of all kinds, she glowed as the sunset. Her sleeping face seemed peaceful as the children braided and decorated her hair. His chest inflates and deflates in rhyme. She was an enigma, how can everyone be so calm and so unhinged when they saw her? Clovis approached and slowly, one by one he led everyone around her inside.
Nighttime came and it was only the two of them left. Clovis sat beside her and covered her in a blanket. Then, he stared at her peaceful expression, and an unfamiliar image hazed through his head. The image did not give him time to process what he was seeing, but the feeling was there. It felt familiar sitting here with her. The feeling soon passed, he brushed it off and laid next to her, only flowers separating them. He saw as the stars glistened, and drifted into sleep.
