"Stop thinking so much. It's going to be fine. The boys themselves were the ones who agreed to meet us.", Denis says while coming up and hugging his boyfriend from behind. Both of them are wearing black suits. "I know. But I can't stop thinking about what could go wrong. Maybe they don't actually plan on being nice to us? What if they hate us? What if anyone recognizes me and we get in trouble?", Marco says, causing his boyfriend to tighten the hug and peck him on the cheek. "It's going to be okay. If you feel uncomfortable, we'll leave right away. I'm here with you. Nothing bad is going to happen.", Denis says, lightly rocking his boyfriend in his arms. Marco's hands come up to his boyfriend's arms, taking them off of himself only to turn around and hug him back. His boyfriend immediately takes him into a tight embrace. "I don't want to go to the mass, but... I would like to try going to the actual funeral.", the black-haired man says. "Okay.", his boyfriend replies.
After a short cuddling session, the men make their way downstairs to Denis' car. They booked a hotel in the next biggest town and still have to drive to the actual town the funeral is held. The fact that Marco wanted it that way makes Denis worry. He knows about his lover's past and remembers how difficult it was for him to open up about it. He knows how Marco has been working on what happened for years, with the help of therapists. He wishes he could help more - ever since they decided to go visit Marco's hometown, he has been getting increasingly jumpy and wary. The closer the car gets to its destination, the more tense Marco seems to be in the passenger seat. Mixed with the feelings of worry he has, Denis has feelings of guilt. Guilt for being somewhat excited to be able to see his lover's hometown, the place he grew up in, for the first - and probably last - time. When Denis tries to take Marco's hand to calm him down, the black-haired man flinches away. "Relax. We're still in the car, nobody can see. And nobody can hurt us, love." Marco sighs. "I know. Sorry, I..." Denis takes the opportunity of a red light to look at Marco. "It's fine, no need to say sorry. I just thought holding hands might help you calm down. I hate seeing you like this." Marco grabs Denis' hand. "It does calm me down to hold your hand, usually. It just makes me double anxious here because I'm scared someone will see. But you're right. We're in the car. It's fine here."
Despite his words, Marco's eyes still dart around, checking every person they drive past. He holds onto Denis' hand as if it was a lifeline, occasionally tightening his grip when they pass certain places or corners. Denis grabs the starring wheel tightly and tries his best to focus on driving to their destination. The thought of simply driving back and never coming there again crosses his mind more than once - but he fights that urge.
