"I need your phone Nic, to call my mom one last time."
"No problem", she pointed to the cupholder with her cell tucked inside.
It rang twice before Selena heard her voice," Hello?"
"Mom? I'm with Nicki, so you don't need to pick her up."
"Is everything okay? I've been waiting for a while."
"I'm fine mom, I promise everything’s okay. I need to stay with Nic tonight."
"Um. that’s okay I guess, there’s nothing tomorrow, but you owe her an explanation at some point."
"Alright, mom."
"Have a nice night, love you, Selena."
"Love you too mom."
Selena crumbled as she ended the called her face crumpled in pain and her chest fell into my knees as if she was a ball.
Nicki drove into the next station and leaned over to hug Selena, "She'll understand Sel."
"Let’s just get this over with," Her voice was cracked and quiet.
Selena got out and did her thing with the atm, it happened eight more times.
Selena was just getting into the car after their last stop when Nicki started to get out.
"Where are you going?", Sel asked Nicki.
"Grabbing some drinks and snacks, It’s a long drive."
"It's around three and a half hours, some juice would be nice if you don’t mind."
As Nicki was in the convenience store Selena started to think about the gunshots. There were many options before her. She could kill them, which.. was not an option, Selena didn't know how to use a gun or get one, not to mention was not exactly the murder type.
Selena jumped when Nicki returned and threw a bag of chips at her, "I'm getting gas while we are here, so I don't know, stretch your legs... Go to the bathroom. I don't know," she said shutting the door once again.
Hardly able to step without an emotional breakdown Selena took off to the bathroom with her new backpack on my shoulder. It was an older station with a bathroom on the side that was left unlocked.
Selena locked the door and then opened the front pocket of the backpack to pull out the silver chain with the small fox pendant. Looping it around her arm she took her hair down to toss it into a messy bun. She put the necklace around her neck and stared into the mirror watching herself.
Every little thing, every tinge of fear made her reconsider what they were doing.
She tore her sweatshirt off and stuffed it in the bag’s bigger pocket.
When she got back into the car her face was still moist from splashing it with water.
